That is a great list, aside from your usual generosity regarding SP.

Thanks. SP still remains my least watched Bond film.

    That's a great idea, @Birdleson.
I'll try a similar ranking how I would have done as a kid. After my Dad bought our first VHS player we rented the Bonds every weekend for months.

This is my 5th grade era ranking after I had finally seen all the films (up until then):

    1. GOLDFINGER
    2. DR NO
    3. FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
    4. NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN
    5. DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER
    6. FOR YOUR EYES ONLY
    7. LIVE AND LET DIE
    8. OCTOPUSSY
    9. THUNDERBALL
    10. A VIEW TO A KILL
    11. THE SPY WHO LOVED ME
    12. MOONRAKER
    13. YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE
    14. ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE
    15. THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN
    16. CASINO ROYALE 67

    Here's an updated current ranking:

    1. GOLDFINGER
    2. FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
    3. THE SPY WHO LOVED ME
    4. DR NO
    5. THUNDERBALL
    6. ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE
    7. THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS
    8. SKYFALL
    9. OCTOPUSSY/NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN
    10. CASINO ROYALE 06
    11. GOLDENEYE
    12. LIVE AND LET DIE
    13. FOR YOUR EYES ONLY
    14. LICENCE TO KILL

    16. DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER
    17. YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE
    18. QUANTUM OF SOLACE
    19. THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN/ CR54
    20. TOMORROW NEVER DIES

Glad to see it @ToTheRight , maybe others will make the attempt.

It's funny actually. I do tend to place myself back in those simpler times when I pop in a Bond these days.

I can’t replicate it exactly, but I’ll try to recreate a list I might have had in my early days as a Bond fan, having seen all of them up through CR. Let’s try:

    1. Casino Royale
    2. The Spy Who Loved Me
    3. Goldfinger
    4. Licence to Kill
    5. The Man with the Golden Gun
    6. Diamonds Are Forever
    7. The World Is Not Enough
    8. You Only Live Twice
    9. Octopussy
    10. GoldenEye
    11. Live and Let Die
    12. Dr. No
    13. Thunderball
    14. Die Another Day
    15. From Russia with Love
    16. The Living Daylights
    17. Moonraker
    18. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
    19. For Your Eyes Only
    20. A View to a Kill
    21. Tomorrow Never Dies

I really liked TMWTGG when I first saw it as well, although it was on TV. Declined thereafter and has now levelled out in the lower reaches of my rankings, but I do remember being pleasantly surprised by it back in the day (late 70s probably?)

OK I will go with 1983 and being 13,so as far as OP :

    1.TMWTGG
    2.OP
    3.MR
    4.TSWLM
    5.FYEO
    6.LALD
    7.DAF
    8.GF
    9.YOLT
    10.FRWL
    11.TB
    12.DN
    13.OHMSS

As you can see,i was a big RogerBond fan compared to Connery, and I wouldn't even watch OHMSS as this guy wasn't Roger or Sean,he wasn't Bond.

And now, 2018 and being 48 ,these 13 films are in this order :

    1.OHMSS (+12)
    2.FRWL (+8)
    3.TB (+8)
    4.OP (-2)
    5.TSWLM (-1)
    6.LALD (-)
    7.DN (+5)
    8.GF (-)
    9.DAF (-1)
    10.YOLT (-1)
    11.TMWTGG (-10)
    12.FYEO (-7)
    13.MR (-10)

How tastes change over time...that's quite a shift !!

12 years of age when AVTAK came out. Fully Blossomed Bond fan by this point. Had started to read the Fleming books... This is how I saw the Bond films (easy to remember, since we were watching so many on VHS by that point):

    GF
    TB
    DAF
AVTAK (!) (I had just seen it in the cinema-- loved it)
    NSNA
    DN
    FRWL
    YOLT
    OP
    TSWLM
    FYEO
    LALD
    TMWTGG
    MR

    Now:

    GF/FRWL
    TB
    DN
    YOLT
    NSNA
    DAF
    LALD
    OP
    TSWLM
    TMWTGG
    AVTAK
    FYEO
    MR

Watching TMWTGG tonight, I was thinking back to seeing this in the theatre (at least twice) in 1974, when I was 12 years old. At that time it was my favorite Bond film. It was the only period in time (about three years, then I saw it on TV again and it went back to the top) where I didn’t consider GF my favorite. By that time I had seen almost all of them in either the theatre, the drive-in or on television. So I’ve tried to put myself back there and try to put together a ranking as I would have back then.

    Birdleson‘s Rankings (1974)
    1. THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN (theatre)
    2. GOLDFINGER (drive-in)
    3. LIVE AND LET DIE (theatre)
    4. YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE (drive-in)
    5. FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE (television)
    6. DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER (drive-in)
    7. DR. NO (drive-in first, but my memory holds much closer to that television debut)
    8. THUNDERBALL (drive-in)

I hadn’t seen OHMSS at that point, but when I finally did in ‘76 it went right to the bottom. It was the infamous ABC cut. I did not see it in its proper form until the mid-90s and immediately loved it. TSWLM would be up near the top, MR in the cellar, upon their releases.

    Cool, I'll play @Birdleson!

    (Excellent!)
    1. The World Is Not Enough
    2. Goldfinger
    3. From Russia With Love
    4. Tomorrow Never Dies
    5. Dr. No
    6. GoldenEye

    (Very good, but too bloated)
    7. Thunderball
    8. Die Another Day

    (Almost classic)
    9. The Spy Who Loved Me
    10. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    11. The Living Daylights
    12. Licence to Kill

    (Great, but problems)
    13. Octopussy
    14. For Your Eyes Only

    (Enjoyable, yet frustrating)
    15. Live and Let Die
    16. Diamonds Are Forever
    17. A View to a Kill
    18. The Man with the Golden Gun

    (Too far fetched!)
    19. You Only Live Twice
    20. Moonraker

I think that was my Bond rankings post my visit to see DAD in the cinema.

Note the symmetry of the top eight. And I had no problem with the outlandishness of the invisible car, but hollowing out a dormant volcano... Ah, the blindness of youth!

It makes it interesting. I don't hate any 007 film. My rankings are more based on personal preferences. Which are the ones that I find myself watching more than others. I don't think ive watched FYEO or LTK more than 6-7 times total in my life. Not saying they're bad, but just not my cup of tea.
  • Hottest woman, by regime:

    Connery: Claudine Auger, Thunderball

    7. TB
    8. CR

    10. LTK
    11. GF
    12. TMWTGG

Thanks @FoxRox. It's the first time I've ranked NSNA. The one that has seen a big move up is TMWTGG, mainly on account of Rog.

I’m afraid I don’t share your love for TMWTGG, but of course we can’t be 100 percent alike. I’d rank a few like GF, CR, and AVTAK a bit higher but you still have one of my favorite lists I’ve seen. I have SF up next for rewatch.

Thanks again. This is actually the highest I've ever had GF (I'm still coming round to it again - used to like a lot more years back). TB has taken a bit of a fall (I used to have it at 2). I still love certain parts of it immensely (particularly the dialogue) but acknowledge that the pacing can be slow at times. This is the first time I've ever put SF ahead of CR as well (Craig's third keeps getting better for me).
I love me some SF. The backlash against it here kind of disappoints me, but it is what it is. TB is a pretty solid entry. CR of course though is my personal favorite one.

Yes, SF (like SP but to a lesser extent) is quite polarizing for the fanbase. Come to think of it, all the Craig entries, apart from CR, have been that way. Either one loves them or one hates them. There's no middle ground.

CR is definitely one of the best Bond films, but I think the reason I prefer SF is because I can still readily accept it as a standalone and it's very layered thematically.

Thank you @JamesBondKenya. There are many reasons I have it far ahead of the pack, but most notable is the suspenseful atmosphere that pervades the film, combined with an element of romance and seduction. It's the tautest pure thriller in the canon, and everything about it reeks of refined and inimitable Bondian style and sophistication. I really hope they make one like this again one day.
