I should also add I'd like to see the non-Fleming John Gardner book Icebreaker filmed.

Maybe not enough set-pieces for an entire film. But I want to see the beautifully capable Mossad agent. The Finland and Arctic Circle locations, snow machine travel through the wilderness. The ice torture would be especially compelling. Might have to lose the Nazi connections. Or not.

But most of all: Bond's car battling 3 huge snowplows on a roadway grid of furious action. And find some excuse to include a (rental) 1981 Saab 900 Turbo. The Silver Beast, with optional extras.

Of course update it to the 21st Century in the style of Casino Royale. Easy.

You'll not find any complaints from me either in that regard. I've long been a proponent of filming some of the Bond Continuation novels. Icebreaker is one of my favourites from Gardner and it was his own personal favourite up until he wrote TMFB.

Better at this point to start adapting continuation novels than a "original screenplay" by Purvis and Wade. Also, RichardtheBruce, your style of how you think it should be done, is exactly how I feel it should be done! Great minds think alike!

I'm glad to see a thread devoted to adaptation novels as a basis for future films.
ICEBREAKER was one of my favorite Gardner books as well. I really liked FOR SPECIAL SERVICES.

Considering how long it takes for Eon to come up with a Bond plot these days, I am baffled as to why none of the other books haven't been considered. There is a TON of plot-lines, concepts, characters, and titles that could be used in this day and age.

Apparently Gardner wasn't responsible for many of the final titles chosen by the publishers for his novels. NO DEALS, MR BOND being one he never took credit for.
I remember an interview where he said it was the best out of a very bad batch offered him.

ICEBREAKER, is a great Bond title, IMO. Same with FOR SPECIAL SERVICES, ROLE OF HONOR, SCORPIUS, and BROKENCLAW.

I haven't read many of the newer books. Got thru CART BLANCHE and liked it alright, but still preferred to read Fleming.

    Mathis wasn't a cover name.

Bond's question is the darkest humor ("Is Mathis your cover name?").

Mathis' response ("Yes...") confirms that returning to South America he used his own name, Mathis. Not a cover name.

Bond's next comment ("Not a very good one, is it?") gets a painful laugh from Mathis. He was careless believing his old contacts were still good, and it was the death of him. A fatal mistake.

The dialog isn't to be taken literally, it has a deeper meaning.

I had never interpreted the dialogue this way, but it makes perfect sense. I had never liked the idea of Mathis being a cover name either, so thank you, @RichardTheBruce, for providing me a perfectly plausible alternative. You've just made QoS one shade greater in my eyes than it already is.

Totally agreed. This definitely elevates QoS even further to my eyes even though I loved it already.

Now what bothers me is the "forgive" lines, why does Mathis ask for Bond's forgiveness? He never did him any harm, did he?

It’s no stretch of the imagination to think that Mathis held some contempt for Bond following the events of CR. Mathis was obviously detained and interrogated and who knows what else over Bond’s suspicion of him. We saw him tasered unconscious at the very least. They play it fairly lightly during their reunion, but just look at the way Mathis greets him: “What do you want? Come to apologize?” Perhaps Mathis wants forgiveness for his contempt.

But, above all, he understood Bond's position and wasn't exactly antagonistic towards him. Just a few light jokes thrown around, like not seeing him worthy of the [cheap] wine he bought.

Ok I'm with you all on Rene Mathis coming back in a better way for the movies. However that's not the topic of the thread here. Make a thread if you want ways for Mathis to come back. Maybe EON will listen!

One more thing on Mathis in Quantum of Solace--I think folks have mistaken the dialogue.

Mathis: Vesper! Forgive her... Forgive yourself.

Actually very selfless final moments. His time was not wasted there.
  • He does also ask "Do we forgive each other?" though.

Oh, yes, thanks for that clarity @Some_Kind_Of_Hero. I should have gone to a reference.
Mathis: Do we forgive each other?

Bond: I shouldn't have left you alone.

Mathis: Vesper. She gave everything for you. Forgive her. Forgive yourself.

Pussy thinks you will find that the huge royalty Eon would have to pay to IFP answers your question.
As long as they stick with Fleming's titles or original works they commission, they don't have to pay a dime.
As to which non-Fleming Bond books should be adapted, the answer is either Higson's 'Young Bond' books and/or the fabulous 'Money Penny Diaries'. Both would bring something new different and refreshing to the franchise instead of adapting sub-standard (Amis & Horowitz excluded) continuation work.

or the fabulous 'Money Penny Diaries'.

And what a superb opportunity that would be to
bring an older former Bond back.

Bond 25 might be filming in Canada? Possible Icebreaker adaptation in the works? You would need to modernize the Soviets plot, and I would swap the main villain with Blofeld. It seems like a plot for him and SPECTRE anyway.

Canada? Why not a true adaptation of FYEO or TSWLM?

    Never thought of that sorry!

Love Fleming, like Horowitz, but always suspicious of Young Bond, know very little of Moneypenny Diaries... maybe I should check them out
