Damn, this is tough, but I have to go with a tie. I love the movie, it's my favorite of Connery's, but at the same time, the novel is very well done and some of the omitted scenes in it always make me wish they had made it to the screen version.

    I missed FRWL:

    BOOK: 5
    FILM: 4
    TIE: 5

Both the book and the film are an inspiration.

    Doctor No

    Book: 4
    Film: 0
    Tie: 1

I love the film but that tense climax with the "obstacle course" and the octopus is magic!

@DarthDimi, I'll add your vote to the FRWL result. Which makes it the only one so far to end in a tie between book and, well, tie.

DN is my Favourite Fleming novel. The film is also brilliant. The novel wins hands down though.

I'll have to go with the book as well. Which means that we have :

    Book : 9

    Film : 0

I'm reading all the novels and recently finished Dr. No. In all cases thus far, my opinion of the novels are much, much higher than their respective films (except maybe CR [incredible film] and FRWL [film stays quite loyal to the novel]).

    Book: 10
    Film: 0

    Book: 10

The book is decent but the movie launched something special and Connery saying; "Bond, James Bond" created magic. It created a launching pad for EON, re-evaluating the books[ I doubt they would be as popular without the movie franchise], comics, music, actors, etc.
While the book is good the movie just is the beginning of a magical tour de force.

Used to be my favourite book, but now FRWL is. Fantastic start to the film franchise.

    Thank you, @GoldenGun.

    Moving one,

    Goldfinger

    Book: 0
    Film: 2
    Tie: 0

I like the book, don't get me wrong, but the film script was tighter, simpler, more exciting and in perfect harmony with the extravaganza of the 60s.

I too enjoyed reading Goldfinger, but I found the golf scene quite tedious to read seeing as how I already saw the film first and new where the story was going. Nonetheless, it was interesting to see what the film could have done with the other characters. The film had a better plot and improved upon what the novel was lacking.

The film, definitely. The book was good, but the film surpassed it in every category.

In the book, Bond gets slapped in the face by Tilly who is more interested in Pussy. Bond gets tortured heavily by Oddjob and cries when he realizes he isn t dead and gone to heaven. And of course, Solo is on board with the plan, it is Helmut Springer and his assistant who both "fall down the stairs and break their necks" (a metaphor for Oddjob). All great stuff.

The film however is probably my favourite, but goddamnit, the book is also an absolute classic. Can t choose this time

    Film- 6

Well, the movie has so many iconic scenes, and has the most quotable lines in the whole series, that I have to choose it over the book. But it was pretty close to being a tie.

The first and probably the only time a film comes out on top.

I'm going to skip the short stories for obvious reasons.

    Next up is: THUNDERBALL

Thunderball is an interesting case since book and film are more or less alike. But to be fair, I prefer the SPECTRE meetings in the book, particularly Blofeld's lines, as well as the character of Domino. Even the underwater climax, which by the way I do like in the film, feels more exciting in Fleming's delicious words.

Just read the novel. Book wins, the fact that they spent an entire chapter before the SPECTRE meeting describing Blofeld in such precise detail makes him all the more threatening a villain. Bond also has more character in the novel.
