Don't get me wrong, SP's cinematography is looking absolutely stunning, as well, but to me, it doesn't compare to 'The Revenant' in the slightest.

With top-notch cinematography, differences in...quality...are near untraceable. It especially goes for Academy Award nominated DoP's. So saying that "doesn't compare to The Revenant in the slightest" is a bit too soon to say no ;-).

I would disagree there. Every DP has their own unique style that is obvious and telling, just like directors do.

If SF lost to 'Life of Pi,' then I would bet money that SP will lose to something like 'The Revenant.'

It's not too soon to guess that, much like it isn't too soon to confidently say SP will make more than $1.2 billion, no? ;)

Is there an audio issue when Bond says, "I came here to kill you."?

    Yeah, sounds kind of rushed.

Agreed. Personally, from what I've seen, Deakins' Bond work is better than that of HVH (I don't get any locational differentiation yet) but I'm still pumped for the film.

At least that would be grammatically correct.

It is never gramatically correct to kiss another guy. Sorry, Sam.

Looks off the chart. Especially pleased that the snow scenes look colder and not graded in the omnipresent wee wee yellow.

Yup. The yellow sucks a bit. Let's see how it works on the big screen.

I sure hope they don't ruin the movie in post production like they did with QOS!

The issue with the yellow grade, as it's been put, is that it's been applied to a sequence which was shot under blue skies. Blue skies, suffocated with yellow highlights, simply doesn't work.

It's evidently clear in the opening shot, it was filmed on a sunny day with blue skies -- there's still a hint of blue in the sky if you look closely -- yet the highlights have been crushed to the warm zone, which looks odds given the highlights, and particularly the sky, should be blue. Same applies to the shot of Bond in the helicopter, as again -- the highlights look strange, thus the balance of the entire shot does.

In contrast, the shots of Bond on the ground, amongst the crowd, where no blue skies are evident, look better balanced. But it goes without saying, a more saturated vivid grade with balanced highlights, would likely work better. If the entire opening sequence was shot on a cloudy day, the grade would work consistently and as a whole, much much better too.

Following my previous post -- here's a little observation from the second and third trailer, on how the grade is/has been tweaked for a particular scene --

    -- Trailer Two --
    25tj909.jpg

    -- Trailer Three --
    2yjpus1.jpg

To my eye, the first grade looks far better -- more balanced and more natural. It's difficult to understand the motivation behind the second grade -- teal highlights just aren't necessary and the shot looks suffocated.

Sadly, it's doubtful the DI work will be revisited at this stage, but one can only hope it is -- for the opening sequence at least.

I don't know where you guys are seeing yellow. That arial shot of Austria at the beginning is both beautiful and equally cold-looking.

Amazing! These collection of trailers are already better than DAD.

You don't have to be a colourist to notice the highlights in the opening sequence, and the above shot in particular, have been squashed towards the warm zone of the colour reel.

Now that's what I'm talking about.

Hopefully they fix it before release.
  • They're not going to change that. The yellowness is obviously very deliberate.

    This...unfortunately.

Indeed. It's been the same throughout all the trailers, so it's definitely staying.

It doesn't look awful -- it just doesn't suit the shooting conditions in which the footage was captured, and as such, serves as a slight distraction. Like I keep saying, yellow highlights with blue skies simply doesn't compliment one another. Either desaturate the sky completely, or opt for a different more natural grade, like Property posted.

Is the photo above Austria or Mexico? I can understand the warm colors if it's Mexico. It helps convey a hot western environment.

    :))

There are truly so many good scenes they've shown in the trailers. Even if the rest of the movie flops, I know there's already enough in it for me to enjoy. And of course, the upside is sky-high.

I always assumed the brown-yellow tint in the Mexico City scenes was just a side effect of it being one of the most polluted places on Earth.

    ;)
