The Nolan rip-offs in SF were much more obvious to me. It bothered me quite a bit for the first year or so. Now I can watch the film without that eating away at my enjoyment.

I was too busy basking in its glory on my first watch to notice, but after that I'm with you. It doesn't put me off anymore, although I still have a few issues with the film as a whole.

I am in no way a SF hater, I often defend the film, but if their was one criticism I have of the film it is that while I may love it and see it as one of the greats, Skyfall doesn't really add to the bond films as a whole. It's a supremely enjoyable outing, a great popcorn flick, but I doesn't give you the kind of touchstones that a classic entry would. Think about those first six films, each one has a handful (at least) of scenes, lines of dialogue, characters that will never be forgotten and changed what bond films meant to audiences. Their have been a few films since (LTK, CR) that have managed this, and Skyfall doesn't do it. The film borrows from the past instead of creating for itself. In that respect, it will always be a slight disappointment.

Very nice list. I agree with nine of those, but I'd also add TSWLM and FYEO.

True, but on a technical & budgetary level it was the CGI wave of the future.
    Sadly.

Yeah, the reliance on CGI is extremely frustrating. If a team says, "We can achieve the stunt, but we'll need CGI" the Bond franchise should re-write said stunt unless the use of CGI is extremely minimal and only used to add "flavor" to the stunt.

They had a lowest common denominator way of thinking during that era, as has been discussed a lot here.

I think they just wanted to be bigger and badder with the stunts, and thought the audience would continue to lap it up (after all, the box office was improving in $ terms, even though it was falling behind on relative terms in comparison to other box office successes of the day). The disintegrating plane part at the end is just awful, as is the stunt falling out of the back in the helicopter, especially in comparison to the similar, yet phenomenal real work done with the Jeep by Glen & Co in TLD.

In a way it reminded me of the early to mid 80's when many action movies had awful special effects. Some of the Airport movies come to mind - the Concorde one was disgraceful compared to Airport 1975 (or Airport 2) in particular. The Phantom Menace also comes to mind from the late 90's.

They should have realized that it would not 'age' well - which is critical when dealing with a franchise like Bond which has staying power & continues to thrive decade after decade.

True. Add to that poor Director, poor script, poor villan, AWFUL Q scene, invisible car.

DAD has two things going for it:
    1. "London Calling" on the soundtrack
    2. Rosamund Pike

The PTS isn't bad, and I even like the Madonna title song when coupled that title sequence. But golly gee...

After DAD he did seem to become something of a hack. He directed Along Came a Spider, which I once enjoyed but after seeing it again recently is distinctly average, and :-& XX2

That I can't agree with. He was a poor choice to direct a Bond film, no doubt, but he has shown that he is extremely talented. His masterpiece, ONCE WERE WARRIORS, is certainly one of the best films to come out of the '90s.

Yes I agree. POOR BOND director. I thought 'The Devils Double' was a good film.

I've compiled an approximate list based on the number of views given to each Bond film this year. In some spots it is vastly different than my rankings. I would guess that's either because a particular quality of a film may interest me in multiple viewings or that I have just managed to watch some of them on television more readily by chance alone.

    1. Skyfall (+1)
    2. The World Is Not Enough (+14)
    3. Goldfinger (+1)
    4. Tomorrow Never Dies (+3)
    5. Diamonds Are Forever (+8)
    6. Casino Royale (-5)
    7. The Living Daylights (+1)
    8. From Russia With Love (-5)
    9. Octopussy (+2)
    10. For Your Eyes Only (-4)
    11. Goldeneye (-6)
    12. Licence To Kill (+11)
    13. A View To A Kill (+9)
    14. On Her Majesty's Secret Service (-2)
    15. Dr. No (-6)
    16. The Spy Who Loved Me (-2)
    17. You Only Live Twice (--)
    18. Quantum Of Solace (-8)
    19. The Man With The Golden Gun (--)
    20. Thunderball (-5)
    21. Moonraker (--)
    22. Die Another Day (-4)
    23. Live And Let Die (-3)

    Fun Facts:
    - Completely unintentionally, the top two films have the most Judi Dench screen time. I swear that is just coincidence. =))
    - The biggest jump is The World Is Not Enough. This was a childhood favorite of mine, as well as the N64 video game based on the film. It has great momentum at times, mostly in the beginning, that draw me in. I don't find the ending as off-putting as some. The whole concept is never meant to be taken as seriously as other titles. In fact, I recently came across an interview of Pierce Brosnan on the Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon stating that the most ridiculous stunt he ever did was the ski scene in that film. Overall, it's a pleasing watch for me.
    - I've given Licence To Kill numerous chances to appeal to me. Certain aspects of it are brilliant and have made me re-think its placement in my rankings. However, the drugs plot, unnecessary gore, and Dalton's tendency to flip his extremely dark Bond portrayal into a more grounded character to be displeasing to me. I feel like Dalton really only achieves the lighter side of the character with Q, compared to his completely balanced portrayal in The Living Daylights.
    - I alluded to my interest in Diamonds Are Forever in my previous post. I don't really mind Connery's dullest performance as Bond in an official Eon Production to take away from the excitement of the picture. In fact, I believe if Connery gave it his all and the plot was tweaked, particulately at the end, it could rank among the top Bond films. The plot in the beginning is one of the most exciting. If only they took advantage of it being the revenge of his wife's murder and made the second half amount to more than just catching Blofeld as if he was just another criminal, this would be spectacular.
    - Quantum Of Solace has the biggest drop from my rankings when translating over to views. The reasoning is twofold, one is that it hasn't been shown on television as often and with all the other ones I've been watching, haven't had the time to put in the Blu-Ray. Otherwise, I do find some of the action scenes jarring. From a performance standpoint, it could possibly be the best of the Craig era, though. Some of the best moments we have seen from him come from this film, which is why I hold it in higher regard than my viewing shows.

A lot of people are doing a "Bondathon" now, so there should be some fresh rankings soon. I will try to update my own after the release of SPECTRE. I haven t seen an awful many Bond films lately.

I've REALLY been in the mood to watch some Bond again - I've been in a bit of a hiatus lately :/ I will be doing the whole marathon leading up to Spectre for sure, with a couple ranking changes likely. Can't wait to see the rest of everyone's before/after Spectre!

I've got LALD a few places higher where as you've got DN a few places higher, I think I rank LALD higher than most as it was the first one I see and I have a massive soft spot for it and DN does go up and down in my rankings so it will probably go up again next time I view them all.

But I don't think our lists and taste's are too different.

Sorry about that, I get it now. Yeah it looks like I'm pretty much average but my list changes so much apart from the top five (as from 2012) and the bottom five which stay the same, films like FYEO,DN,LTK do regularly go up into my top ten and then drop out again depending on my mood and what film I've just watched etc.
