Yeah. But we don't even know if he's still interested, for a start...before even looking at his current credentials. I think Nolan looks more like the one after Villeneuve.
I don't't know if that matches up timeline wise. Maybe if Nolan took a year off after The Odyssey, and came back with Bond in 2030.
Yeah. Anything's possible.
No, he used to want to direct a Bond film, all the way back before Raiders. He’s shown no interest in directing one since then. Also, that Spielberg “might need a franchise film to bail himself out after a string of not so successful movies” just seems a crazy idea for one of the world’s most successful film-makers at such a late stage in his career. He must be absolutely loaded now and near thinking of retirement, he doesn’t ’need’ to do anything.
Considering his penchant for sentiment, I’m not sure Bond is a good fit for him anyway.
If you want a Bond film, that only entertains on first viewing, but becomes both a critical and commercial failure...that makes the franchise go on a long hiatus, then Edgar Wright is your man. But thankfully, Amazon - MGM wouldn't want that.
Honestly, not that it matters. Some wonderful films have underperformed. I haven't seen it myself either so can't comment on it. If people like it or see any of Wright's potential for Bond, then fine, although obviously it's not something I've seen myself in his previous films.
I'm not sure I'd hold my breath on him for Bond 27 or anything personally.
The real (and more interesting) question is what did you personally think of The Running Man? What do you think it shows Wright will bring to Bond? I'd rather read about that to be honest.
It's sort of ironic isn't it how Wright grew up venerating the works of Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson and has ended up following a similar trajectory. Starting out working independently on Evil Dead to Bad Taste and The Cornetto Trilogy, highly ironic post-modern genre-mashups, and have matured into more "Studio Friendly" action directors who can handle bringing major IP to the screen in Spiderman, King Kong, Doctor Strange and Running Man.
I think if Villeneuve delivers yet another Bond film in the shape of the Craig films, audiences will be desperate for something different. Again, the big mistake is thinking that a weighty story is exactly what the audience wants every time. Sometimes audiences just want a enjoyable ride with a Bondian flair. Even if people call Edgar Wright sensibilities juvenile, guess what, sometimes the audience gets on Board with some cheesy fun. The Last Crusade is one of the most beloved films in cinema history and there's Hella childish humour in that film, especially between Indy and his Dad. Audiences loved it.
Ok. Let us know what you think of his new film when you see it. ;)
Genuinely, I'm interested more in that, not hypotheticals we have no control over, or sounding the trumpet for a director you like. As I always say as well, it's tempting to want to see what a director will bring to Bond, but it may not be the best fit in practice. The flip side is also true potentially. Speaking from my own experience, rewatching and enjoying Blade Runner 2049 gave me a lot more confidence in Villeneuve. I personally saw a Bond film within it (or at least several aspects of it that could be within a Bond movie). I'd love to hear if anyone has any similar experiences with different directors, or are able to convey why they think certain ones might be suited to Bond based on their work.
