Too political? Definitely, bothers me too.

Has-been music? Mostly, yes. I have no issue with that. I prefer older music to newer trends anyway. Besides, not sure if anyone is reinventing music as we speak. As far as I know it's not happening outside the ESC either.

Are all the ESC songs good? No, certainly not. Some of them are really really terrible. Even more so live. Are they all bad though? Also no. Not in my opinion, anyway.

What ESC does that I do like though, is celebrating Europe's cultural and linguistic diversity. And I'm all for that. It's also the only, the one and only, moment in the entire year that some non-English language music gets a little bit of attention before we are encouraged by mainstream media to return to the same stuff from the same people all over again (and pretend music is only produced in Anglo-Saxon countries). Is it the best representation of continental Europe's music? No. The Italian music scene for instance has much better stuff to offer than what we see at ESC from them (although the Italians are always amongst the better entries regardless). But it is what it is, I quite like to go from Italian to French, from German to Swedish, from Spanish to Portuguese, from Serbian to Greek, etc., each time changing genre along the way too. Just this single one time in the entire year however, I don't need to go all niche for that. For that reason I can appreciate ESC, despite its more than obvious shortcomings.

After that elaborate justification, I'll now return back to my niche playlists and will return here in May in the hope that ESC doesn't undermine my defense too much :p

As it's St Patrick's Day, here's the greatest Eurovision trolling entry ever from Ireland:

Just coming back here to share what I think is a superb Albania entry:

    Easily top 3 for me.

The spokeperson for the United Kingdom is (drumroll please) :

Ncuti Gatwa. Given that the Doctor will attend the Intergalalctic Song Contest earlier that evening, that's quite logical, methinks.

Checks the right boxes, but gets a bit boring soon imho. If the performance goes well on stage, this could be among the best. But people's tastes are difficult to predict.

At the eve of these years contest, let's revisit some classic stuff, such as Uno per tutte by Emilio Pericoli (with an 'appearance' from FRWL's Daniela Bianchi):

Finished 3rd at ESC 1963. Remains one of my favourites.

Certainly better than anything I've heard of the ESC 2025 so far.

Musically, I enjoyed these the most:

    Miriana Conte - Serving (Malta)
Klemen - How much time do we have left (Slovenia)
    Gojo - Milkshake Man (Australia)
Tommy Cash - Espresso Macchiato (Estonia)
Laura Thorn - La Poupée Monte Le Son (Luxembourg)
    Napa - Deslocado (Portugal)
Ziferblat - Bird of Pray (Ukraine)

But in the end, none of these will make the top 10 if the bookies are to be believed.

Agreed about Luxembourg, Portugal and Slovenia.

I personally also quite like Sweden, Albania, Spain, Germany, France and of course Gabry Ponte for San Marino :)

My favourite ESC entry ever will never be matched though ;) :

With this one as a runner-up:

The song that launched a revolution :

    A favourite of mine :

Who would have thought that an Ingmar Bergman movie would inspire a Eurovision song ?

@Gerard I had to look up the meaning of the first song for the Portuguese people. I guess we learn a bit more every day.

Very nice, I am guessing this one refers to The Virgin Spring?

As far as this edition is concerned, quite happy San Marino managed to achieve only their 4th ever spot in the final! Also rather nice to see Portugal go through.

A good semi-final for native language songs too (with 8 out of the 10 qualified entries!), which I am all for.

I was pleasantly surprised by Italy's entry and I think, since the lyrics are its strongest point, it's wise of them to project English subtitles during the performance. I always liked it but I had other favourites at Sanremo. It has grown on me though, hope Lucio does well on Saturday.

Some less than impressive vocal performances were also present of course, Cyprus and Azerbaijan being the main offenders. Norway also but to a lesser extend.

Who needs the UN when you have Eurovision? A great example of "soft power".

Second semis. I liked Latvia, Greece, Lithuania, Luxembourg and to some extend Finland.

I thought France was fabulous and appreciate Germany's guts to bring something German again and it's rather catchy as well.

Austria will be the jury-darling this year, and I'd be surprised if he doesn't win. I'll admit it's quite an accomplishment to sing like that, though just like Nemo last year it's just not my cup of tea. Much prefer the Swedish entry.

For the final my personal top 10 would be San Marino, France, Italy, Sweden, Greece, Luxembourg, Germany, Iceland, Portugal and Latvia. In that order.

From the eliminated ones I liked Slovenia, which I thought was a very sincere song, and Georgia whose singer gave a phenomenal vocal performance (leaving politics out of the equation here for a moment, because my knowledge of this particular situation is limited).

Didn't hate it, but a bit bland perhaps...

On the other hand, I wish Laika is alive too, so at least there's that :p

Haven't really found a favourite among the entries I've heard so far from this year's Eurovision. None have really stood out. Will be watching the final with a bit more interest this time around though, as the singer of the Norwegian entry is from my hometown.

So the UK were in 19th position with nul points from the public vote. Well, there's a surprise. The song wasn't very good to be honest so it's not too much of a shock. I suppose it could have always been worse. They could've come last.

The winning song is perfect if you want to kill the Martians of Mars Attacks.

Last was my favourite San Marino :p But to be honest, reaching the final itself is a huge success for a microstate such as San Marino, regardless of the song quality.

I personally really liked Germany, Sweden, Italy and France too.

As for the winner, well I'm sure it's well-done and I suppose there aren't many who can sing like that. It just isn't for me though. Same goes for last year's winner.

The song that should have won this year :

The song they played at the end of the episode :

The skirt drop still gets me.

And here's the song France would have presented in 1974, if president Georges Pompidou hadn't passed away :

It as the first of only two times France didn't take part in the competition.
