And took him another three years to get around to TSWLM.

To be fair, he had to sort out the legalities after Satlzman sold his half of the ownership to United Artists. This was how Wilson first got involved as a lawyer before getting into producing films.

Though I wonder why Bond didn’t point out the water to the locals.

Do you guys think Barbara Broccoli and EON Productions are still interested in Bond films?
Or maybe they want to distance themselves a bit?

EON and Barbara Broccoli have made films outside of the Bond universe for a long time.
Nothing to do with not being interested or trying to distance themselves.

All I am going to say is........................Cubby Broccoli gave Bond 100% of his time, except for Chitty, which was an Ian Fleming project, while Saltzman did other things.

That doesn’t say much, considering that Cubby’s track record wasn’t flawless.

Besides, TILL has five other credited producers, so I don’t think Barbara Broccoli had to put as much focus on that film compared to producing a Bond film.

Unfortunately, neither is Barbara's track record with Bond. She may be one of many producers on Till but she has also had to spend time on the Broadway play, not to mention keeping track of the Bond reality TV series. There are just so many hours in the day or brain cells you can apply to projects.

So we essentially agree that it doesn’t matter how Cubby and Barbara handled their side of things? She’s never had to work on a Bond film as a solo producer like her dad in the late 70s and early 80s. She always had her brother’s support, and supposedly her nephew is on the rise as a producer for when Michael retires for good.

Sure, but reasons only matter when it's Cubby: if it's Barbara then the reasons don't count and it's her fault :D

OK................................. So who's fault was the inclusion of the Bond/Blofeld stepbrothers debacle?

Yeah, I gleefully put the boot into Purvis and Wade for years over the Brofeld malarkey before I found out that MGW was the culprit! Easy mistake to make, though, tbf...

This is why I have never been too harsh on Purvis and Wade. So much of the script goes through rewrites by so many other people whether it’s additional writers, script doctors, directors, producers, etc. Even back in the Richard Maibaum days not everything was from his pen, and not everything from his pen was gold either. Some of his original ideas for DAF were even more outrageous than what Mankiewicz brought to the table (example: Blofeld gets killed by a bunch of white cats).

I genuinely don't get the issue with Purvis and Wade. The stories have all seemed pretty solid to me: if the continuation novels had plots with those ideas in fans would be clamouring to have them made into films.

Good points and P & W are innocent of Brofeld, so they're clearly not as bad as I'd tagged them. But if it's true that Martin Campbell tried to get them removed from CR and Marc Forster did get them removed from QOS, I'm guessing they had their reasons. ;)

Directors stepping in on a project that already had a draft written typically like to bring in their own writers to put in their own stamp. Campbell brought in Paul Haggis. Forster brought in Joshua Zetumer. Mendes brought in John Logan then Jez Butterworth. And finally Fukunaga brought in Scott Z. Burns, with Craig having Phoebe Waller-Bridge finish it.

One thing that I’ll give P & W is that they don’t go around criticizing others for not doing the script right. Richard Maibaum was a horrible a-hole when it came to this. Criticizing everyone for not doing his script his way, when some of his ideas were horrible. Ian Fleming laid most of the writing foundations Dick, not you. A script is a simple blueprint, not the Bible. And that’s from Tim Burton, folks. I think most fans want them gone to see if their criticism of their scripts are justified. Saying that they’re not coming back repeatedly doesn’t help their case.

Why should she only make Bond?
If I think of all the other filmmakers whose work I enjoy, I can't imagine being irritated that they've made other films on subject matter I personally have enjoyed less. I love the Indiana Jones films; am I supposed to be annoyed that Spielberg dared to make Saving Private Ryan instead of Indy 4?

I have no problem with it either, but in Barbara Broccoli/EON's case, they're not updating us about Bond, what's their plan, what's going on already, what's happening, no updates while us Bond fans were hanging in nowhere, there are no clarifications about Bond, what happened?

There's no progress, but it seemed that they're more active in making other films, that made me question, are they still interested in making Bond films? Because from no updates, no clarifications or whatsoever, to making other films like these.

There are even other Bond fans outside of this forum asking if the Bond series is over after NTTD, because so far, there's no updates, but yet Babs and EON are busy on making other films.

No problem with them making other films, it's obvious that they're active, but it's should be clear to us fans about their intentions regarding the Bond franchise, are there any progress, even just a simple, "yes, we're working on it" or just say make it straight and say "there are no Bond films for now and we're focusing on different projects first" would help.

The producers left us hanging on air waiting for updates.

I don't think they're under any obligation to provide us with updates. And they were doing quite a few interviews a month or two back around the 60th where they did update on where they were with it. They can't be giving us a newsletter with every stage of production.

Remember, we Bond fans are one of the luckiest fandoms out there. While waiting for the next film, we have 25 other official films, countless books and a few decent video games to enjoy. We are actually truly blessed with our Bond media. Plus honestly, humans do like to rest a bit and not do the same thing over and over again.

Agreed. For comparison, I enjoy the Marvel universe. However, everything recently has been so watered down to a point in which there is only a small handful since Endgame that I've enjoyed. I don't want the same with Bond. I think it's just bothersome though since it was six years between SP and NTTD and now looking at roughly another four between NTTD and the next film. We're just not used to this level of hiatus. I was too young during the LTK to GE hiatus so I cannot compare what that was like..

Also I'd say we're actually very well-served as fans: during production of NTTD there was a live cast reveal show with interviews of everyone involved, a BTS video was shared, official photos from the set (that cool one of him in London walking from the Aston- they didn't need to publish that), a title reveal animation... all sorts of things. I've been following the new Indiana Jones film for the last couple of years, and they kind of grudgingly only told us what the actual title of the film is when they finally put a teaser trailer out in November! I think even now half the cast haven't been officially announced, and their character names are still dribbling out. Eon are actually really good at keeping fans in the loop, but people always think they deserve more.

Personally, I do have problems with producers that take on too much and how it affects all their projects. I still think that there are only just so many hours in a day to put one's attention to the problem solving required to develop a film project. Getting the right writer, director, cinematographer, production designer, composer and actor are very big challenges when reinventing a franchise.

Fair enough. Given how I felt about NTTD, I have no problems with how the producers conduct their business. I rather they make Bond films on their own time than not.

Perhaps another way of looking at the return of Bond is to weigh the pros and cons of letting the franchise rest for a while to make sure there is no Bond franchise fatigue with general audiences and separating them from the ending of NTTD as well as letting a new generation of film goers being freshly introduced to 007. Toho Studios consciously did this with their prime franchise.
  • It is going to be a wait that is for sure, probably wouldn't expect the new film for at least 5-6 years. There may eventually be new management by then from EON.

That's a very good point mate.

I think you'd be completely right after the end of any other era, but I think given the ending NTTD, it's important to remind casual viewers Bond will return.

I'll never forget walking out of NTTD on opening night and the two couples sitting either side of me and Mrs, shrugged and said "I guess they're not making anymore Bond pictures".

It made me think I wonder how many people don't realise that Daniel's is it's own universe

I hope they take their time and plan the next actors era throughly.

For #26; could they go back in time and do a 1950s Fleming era thing? With the Bentley, all that? Introduce May, who never appeared in a movie, etc.

I can certainly see the appeal of including May (a yet unused, Fleming created character), but I can't help but feel Bond films need to be going in the direction opposite of including Bond's housekeeper.

I'm 100% for the inclusion of a Continental GT Speedback however.

While I understand why some people want to go back to the 50s/60s, I think that would remove one of the main qualities of the series: its continual ability to adapt to the times, making it always relevant and preventing it from becoming out of fashion. Having a movie set in the past would make the series feel like it was unable to renew itself and adapt to the present. Insofar as the series faces Marvel movies that appeal to younger audiences, it could damage the brand's image.

There are also other production issues related to this return to the past: Bond films work a lot with product placements in order to get financed and I doubt Eon could associate as many brands as they do with a modern day setting if the movie is set in the 50s/60s. Maybe some vintage companies could have specific retro products but overall it would be less interesting for them to participate to such movie. Also, and it's less pragmatic, Fleming wrote about his time and never intended Bond to a period character, same things with the movies that always intended to be modern; so to go back to the 50s/60s would in a way betray the philosophy that guided the creation of the character and his big screen adaptation.

Regarding May, I would be very happy to see her in the movies. I guess the most difficult thing however is to find her a purpose. She can't only be a housekeeper and I guess it wouldn't make much sense for the audience to meet Bond's landlady. Developing Bond's daily life would in any case be a good idea. Maybe by bringing back Sylvia Trench or a new similar character?
