Complete List Of James Bond Soundtrack Cues

edited November 11 in Music Posts: 97
Hey,

So here's my attempt to chronicle every musical cue used in an official James Bond film.

I've seen posts on various forums about individual scores, but as far as I'm aware, there isn't a thread with every soundtrack in the order the music appears in the movie.

Please feel free to post below if you spot any mistakes or omissions.

I'd love to be in a position to have a definitive list for each film, including source music, omitted and alternate cues, different versions of the theme song, rejected theme songs etc. etc.

An asterisk denotes a track or cue not commercially available. I haven't included the Nic Raine re-orchestrations, focussing just on original source material from the film. I have made up many of the titles of the missing cues; they are not 'official' designations. I have noted official slate numbers when I have them (John Barry was notorious for not naming his cues). Here we are so far...

40 The James Bond Theme (Dr. No’s Fantasy Instrumental)
41 James Bond Theme (Alternate Version)

Notes:

As is well documented, none of the orchestral cues from Monty Norman’s score made it on to the official soundtrack release. The closest we get is the track 'The Island Speaks', but that is subtly different to the version used in the film. The OST consists of lots of source music and multiple versions of the same themes. The James Bond theme is used in abundance, but is never played in full in the film.

45 Guitar Lament
46 Leila Dances

19 minutes 40 seconds approx. unreleased music

Notes:

The OST captures most of the score, but we’re still missing a lot of music. Most of the cues are short musical flourishes as scene-setters or brief iterations of the James Bond theme. There are several cues which were obviously intended for the film, but were dropped in the edit (The Golden Horn, Death Of Grant, Guitar Lament, etc). I’m not sure why ‘Leila Dances’ was replaced by the more generic belly dancer music heard in the film. The version of the 007 Theme played during the gypsy camp fight is different to the one on the OST. Interestingly, Editor Peter Hunt uses Monty Norman's cue 'Death Of Dr. No' from the previous film for two scenes. Sadly the version of the main titles featuring an organ have never been commercially released.

Notes:

It’s a common misconception that the re-release of this soundtrack in 2003 is complete, when there are in fact quite a few cues still missing. Some of the film versions vary to the OST; notably the casino music at the start of the film ‘Try’, Louis Armstrong’s truncated and slightly-differently-orchestrated version of ‘We Have All The Time In The World’, ‘Escape From Piz Gloria’ which features tremolo strings in the film, and the instrumental cue of ‘We Have All The Time In The World’ at the end of the movie, which is far shorter than the OST. Quite a bit of the source music is missing too, including the Spanish guitar at the lunch after the bullfight and the Swiss alps skating music, which is combined on a slate with a brass band melody (the A section is the oompah music, the B section is the prettier melody). Thanks to Lukas Kendall for providing some of these notes and the slate numbers.

Notes:

There is a substantial amount of music missing from this soundtrack and matters are made worse by several cues on the OST differing to those heard in the film (‘Grisly Land’, ‘Kung Fu Fight’, ‘Goodnight Goodnight’, ‘Let’s Go Get ‘Em’). Most of these differ subtly in terms of instrumentation or structure - for instance the film version of ‘Let’s Go Get ‘Em’ is lacking the drum kit at the start of the cue and then it’s much lower in the mix when it appears. The drum pattern also differs when the James Bond theme begins. The OST also curiously omits Nick Nack's cello and bassoon leitmotif, which appears throughout the film.

There is quite a lot of source music in the film; the Beirut club music was provided by dance adviser Jean Issakoff (and credited to him on the movie’s official cue sheet). It sounds as though Barry provided the source music when Bond leaves the club as the brass arrangement is very ‘Barry-esque’ and is different in timbre to the other nightclub music. Evidently Barry was tasked to write it to replace the staccato flute and violin rendition of the James Bond theme which plays at the end of 'Getting The Bullet' on the OST and was presumably intended for the end of that scene.

It will be interesting to see - should the original recordings ever materialise - if the gun barrel matches the reverb-heavy version heard in cinemas at the time and on the DVD release, or if it’s the more restrained version on the subsequent BluRay and streaming release.

Notes:

Following ‘Dr. No’, this is the most incomplete Bond soundtrack released to date. A large percentage of the music was re-recorded for the soundtrack album and, as a result, doesn’t sound exactly like the music heard in the film. In fact, only three cues on the album are used in the film and two of those are source music.

The James Bond Theme is heard played on the electric guitar for the first time since ‘Diamonds Are Forever’, but is omitted completely from the soundtrack. There is a ‘medley’ version of the disco version of the James Bond theme heard repeatedly throughout the film (the opening ski chase, car and helicopter chase in Sardinia, the battle on the Liparus etc.) presented on the OST as ‘Bond ’77’, which is slightly slower than what’s heard in the film.

As an aside, I’d forgotten how similar the Stalking Jaws cue is to Stalking from the ‘From Russia With Love’ soundtrack. It’s a pure homage to John Barry. Marvin Hamlisch also makes a nod to George Martin, as the Motorcycle Chase cue in Sardinia is very reminiscent of the score for ‘Live And Let Die’.

The main theme by Carly Simon also differs in the film; it has a fade out on the OST but in the film's opening titles it finishes on a long note. The downtempo instrumental version of the title track on the OST also doesn’t appear in the film (although a shorter, similar sounding version plays on the boat to Cairo). The track ‘Anya’ also doesn’t feature at all in the film.

There are plenty of classical music excerpts, mostly for scenes set on Atlantis. I think the Bach and Mozart cues are orchestrated by Hamlisch, as is the Chopin Nocturne, which is arranged for orchestra and piano, with the violins playing the melody and the piano providing the accompaniment. The Lawrence Of Arabia main theme is also arranged by Hamlisch for the desert trek sequence.

This soundtrack is screaming for an expanded release!

44 Carnival Source (recorded on location)
45 Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky - Fantasy from Romeo And Juliet Overture

20 minutes 20 seconds approx. unreleased music

Notes:

An expanded release of this score, which marks John Barry’s foray into more symphonic orchestral writing, has long been clamoured for by fans. Interestingly, the OST is completely devoid of the James Bond Theme, as heard most prominently in the ‘Freefall’ sequence and ‘Gondola Chase’. The whole of the pre-titles music is in fact missing (the only Bond OST where this occurs), as well as the cue when Bond arrives at Drax’s chateau, Bond sitting in the Centifruge, the music around the Venini glassworks and Bond hang gliding to safety from the waterfall. There are quite a few cues missing from the final third of the film, many of which are variations on ’Flight Into Space’; Drax’s Shuttle launch, the NASA Shuttle launch and the sequence when gravity is lost on the station. There is another unreleased cue when Bond destroys the first globe in orbit of earth, which is tracked a few minutes later when he manually destroys the final one. Jaws’ reunion with Dolly is a variation on the ‘Miss Goodhead Meets Bond’ cue, but with a new flute counter-melody and different end cadence.

Two of the tracks on the album differ to what’s heard in the film; the ending of ’Flight Into Space’ has the choir singing different notes, which are oddly discordant! (listen when the first astronaut enters the station to activate gravity control). This could be an overlay, but I think it’s unlikely. The disco version of Shirley Bassey’s end title also has an introductory romantic strings part and is mixed differently to the album version; the guitar is lower in the mix and the drum kit is more prominent.

Music recorded on location during Rio’s Carnival is heard during Jaws’ attack on Manuela, although the Cabana Club source and mardi gras music played by the band as Bond approaches the Cable Car are Barry’s own. So too is the arrangement of the ‘Theme From The Magnificent Seven’.

Notes:

The La-La Land Records release captures nearly all of the music from the score, apart from the casino source, a missing sting which forms part of the ‘Palace Intrigue’ track when Bond bumps into the hanging bodies in the palace (presumably an overlay) and another sting when Bond walks through a tarantula nest.

Notes:

As per many of the OSTs, quite a few of the musical ’scene setters’ are missing, such as Bond’s arrival in Paris and the beautiful cue when Bond arrives at the Chateau with Tibbett. There’s a cue which is very reminiscent of the strings in the main theme of OHMSS as the helicopter explodes in the pre-title sequence, but it is barely audible because of the SFX. Other notable missing cues include the saxophone-driven and french horn/strings version of AVTAK when Bond seduces May Day and Stacey in the shower respectively, the fight at Stacey’s house (which is a variation on the ‘Snow Job’ main action theme but with the inclusion of the James Bond theme) and variations on the ‘Project Main Strike’ theme.

Notes:

The 1998 Rykodisc CD fills in a lot of the gaps from the OST released in 1987, but there still are a number of cues missing. Most of them centre around the melody of ‘If There Was A Man’ from the end titles. There is a variation of it when Bond picks up Kara’s cello and a slower version when they ride the ferris wheel in Austria. Speaking of the end titles, the film version differs very subtly in that the drum pattern is crossfaded into Chrissie Hynde’s vocal, whereas the soundtrack version just has it from the start of the track. A few of the cues have been edited on the OST with the last chord removed so they can be combined with other cues for a better listening experience. Technically ‘Murder At The Fair’, ‘Mujahadin’ and ‘Air Bond’ are not the film versions. Other notable missing cues include the scene where Bond and Kara embrace in Afghanistan. This is very similar to the latter half of ‘Kara Meets Bond’ on the OST, but with variations in tempo (it’s slightly faster) and it also ends on a major tonality rather than a minor one. Cues when Bond is unconscious aboard the Hercules, which are a slower tempo version of ‘Where Has Everybody Gone?’ with a new counter-harmony, also have sadly never seen the light of day.

1 hour, 18 minutes & 30 seconds approx. unreleased music

Notes:

This, so far in my research, appears to be the most incomplete soundtrack, with nearly an hour and twenty minutes of missing music. Quite a few of the cues have been truncated for the OST, presumably for a better listening experience. I was fortunate enough to be given some help with this soundtrack, so can vouch that the majority of cues listed are Thomas Newman’s titles. Interestingly, the car chase around Rome was scored as three separate cues, mixed together in the edit and presented as one on the OST (‘Backfire’). Confusingly ’Tempus Fugit’ on the OST does not tally with the music we hear when Bond’s watch explodes incapacitating Blofeld; it’s closer to the cue heard in the start of the film when Bond is in the helicopter (‘Helicopter Fight’), but that cue has the Bond theme flourish at the end which segues into Sam Smith’s main title theme. ‘Escape From Compound’, as noted from Newman’s notes, replaced the ‘Tempus Fugit’ cue. The film version of ‘Madeleine’ also differs from the OST, in that it’s interspersed with the scene with M, Q and Moneypenny in the restaurant and it ends on a difference cadence, as Hinx rapidly approaches them on the train. I’ve heard alternate versions of ‘Helicopter Fight’ and ‘Cuckoo’, so have listed them here as bonus material.

As is well documented, a lot of Newman’s cues borrow liberally from his previous score for Skyfall; ‘Building Down’ from ‘Quartermaster’, ‘Helicopter Chase’ from ‘Grand Bazaar, Istanbul’, ‘Eve - Bodyguard’ from ‘Close Shave’, ‘M’s Message’ from ‘Voluntary Retirement’, ‘The Eternal City’ from ‘Brave New World’, ‘9 Eyes Meeting’ from ‘Someone Usually Dies’, ‘Careless’ from ‘The Moors’ and I’m sure there are some more I’m probably forgetting. There are subtle structural or instrumental changes in each of these instances, but nothing major. I believe the only cue Newman copies without any changes is the one I’ve titled ‘Back To Q’s Lab & The James Bond Theme’, which also appears at the end of Skyfall when it’s revealed that Mallory is the new M. The end of this cue is of course David Arnold’s version of the Bond theme from the end of Casino Royale, ‘The Name’s Bond…James Bond’.

One thing that amused me is the version of ‘New York, New York’ (as heard in 009’s car) is by cheesy X Factor crooner Ray Quinn. Evidently the producers didn’t want to spend money on licensing the Frank Sinatra version (perhaps there’s still bad blood from him turning down ‘Moonraker’ ;) ).

Jamaica Jazz was included in the movie (in France only) as Bond drives to Miss Taro's and remained slated for use in the movie until late in the day - if anyone is keen to include another cue in the main playlist for Dr No.

@vzok, that’s interesting, do you know if I can find it like that if I switch the audio language to French on my blu-ray?

Apparently that was how it was released in theatres in France at the time. No idea about physical releases. But it is like that on the Dr No music and effects track from the laserdisc. Try it around 49.50 here https://archive.org/details/dr_no-criterion_laserdisc-music_and_effects_track-ac3-1ch-48khz-delay-0ms

I think that the Death of Dr No track that Nic Raine recorded is actually used in the scene straight after his death, as Bond runs around looking for Honey.

Thanks so much for your hard work on this, @Bond_Scores. There have been several edits/expanded soundtracks floating around over the years but this really does showcase all the missing cues. I hope one day we can see a full release of them all.

You are correct, @morcarvic. See the beginning of this clip. First you hear the Jazz Compass (track 50 as listed by Bond_Scores) and then very briefly two other tracks for a second or two.

That's great. I've tried that with some of the classical music from TSWLM but it didn't work. It did work with the Strauss polka from MR.

I think it didn't work with the music coming from Chuck Lee's radio in AVTAK either.

i've long held a sneaky suspicion that the chuck lee radio bit,to my ear sounds like a snatch of the avtak theme in a sort rock style so perhaps an unreleased john barry source cue like the trad jazz version on the seine and brief snatch of tld theme after jazz compass &unknown classical bit on tld car radio.

just viewed the list for the living daylights more intently and i believe one source cue for the fairground sequence overlooked would be 'les patineurs'[skaters waltz] heard in wurlitzer form a la reginald dixon style.ps i think the fairground sequence opens with another tune on wurlitzer, maybe a job for your goodself bondscores and shazam?

I just found out the Death of Krilencu track from the little-known French FRWL LP was also included on this LP:

    https://www.discogs.com/es/release/16861203-Al-Caiola-And-His-Orchestra-James-Bond-Story

By the way, I'm not sure what version of the James Bond theme is 2:29. I guess the most logical guess would be James Bond with Bongos.

    ---

Also, the original title for the Clapped Out track in TSWLM is fantastic: The We All Make Mistakes March.

I think that Marvin Hamlisch specifically arranged the pieces of classical music in TSWLM, which accounts for them not being on Shazam. The electronic elements are similar to those used in the rest of the score.

I agree. At the beginning of the Bach piece (IIRC), there is a synth flourish which sounds like the other synths in the film. The Chopin piece also has a unique arrangement for orchestra.

This is possible, especially when considering the wedding party arrangement of AVTAK that you mention.
