I really like some of the continuation Bond novel titles (even though I dislike the stories of most of them). Is there any legal reason they can't use some of them? A lot are admittedly very generic and could be applied to almost any Bond adventure like Devil May Care, For Special Services, No Deals Mr. Bond, High Time to Kill etc.

Devil May Care is a pretty perfect Bond title, I tend to agree; I'd have no issue if they chose to lift that one.

I'd expect that there would have to be some kind of deal with IFP and/or the authors or their estates. AFAIK Eon don't have the rights to make films out of the continuation books and eventhough I am not a lawyer, I think it would be hard to argue that you didn't take some kind of intellectual property from the author or the rights holders if you call a different product in the same IP universe like one of those books. But I'm sure they could come to an agreement if they really wanted to.

Wasn't there a thing where they had to put in a "Special thanks to" or somethin of that nature to one of the continuation authors because a film scene went a little too close to something from the books and that was the settlement? The torture scene in SP being from Colonel Sun or something?

I do like DMC, For Special Services and High Time to Kill

I think they kind of get first refusal on everything from the books but generally don't because it just confuses things: it seems like IFP licence 'James Bond 007' from Danjaq but I guess they still own their own works made under that licence. I guess if they were desperate for one of the titles then they could pay up, but generally it seems like it's easier just to come up with their own titles.
For me, the ones which are really outstanding are Devil May Care and Carte Blanche - they're excellent Bond titles. But the second one probably won't even translate into a title for a global film anyway.

The thing from Colonel Sun seemed to be the speech Blofeld gives about how he and James were present when a man was deprived of his eyes: "he was no longer there" etc.

Yes, it does seem like a bit of a faff just to get a title.

Shame, 'Devil May Care' seems too good a title compared to the story/writing we actually got from the book.

Pra the BOND 26 if they use Fleming's available ones, my choices are Risico and The Property Of A Lady. And another title would be Everything Or Nothing.

    ;)
  • Here are a few Fleming inspired titles I thought of:

    Only Death is Permanent
“Mister. Nothing is forever. Only death is permanent. Nothing is forever except what you did to me.” -Diamonds are Forever

    The Revolver of Resignation
"Everyone has the revolver of resignation in his pocket." -Casino Royale

    Send a Bullet
“Never send a man where you can send a bullet.” -For Your Eyes Only

    Solitude a Darling Sin
“Loneliness becomes a lover, solitude a darling sin.” -The Spy Who Loved Me

I love Only Death is Permanent and Send a Bullet. Both immediatly make me think of a certain tone for the film that seem interesting.

Some of those are groaners...just because Fleming wrote it does not make it worthy of use.

It's not the easiest thing coming up with a Bond title, especially when we don't know what the story is at the moment. I suspect they won't go for a continuation Bond title for the reasons explained above...

Out of the most plausible/somewhat likely ones...

Risico - A solid Fleming title. The benefit of it is that it can be applied to almost anything within the film. Most likely it'll be the name of some sort of mission (Operation Risico).

Nothing is Forever - The original title of Skyfall. It's pretty general and can apply thematically to a James Bond story without being cliched or resorting to words like 'die' or 'kill' etc.

I'm actually not a fan of titles like Property of a Lady or The Hildebrand Rarity... the latter just doesn't bring anything to mind... The former simply doesn't sound like a Bond film at all.

Apart from that, I dunno... random ones that spring to mind are:

Servant of the Crown - Perhaps a bit too political? Still, that's essentially what Bond is so it makes sense.

Shadowstorm - Could apply to absolutely anything within a potential Bond story - a Macguffin, an operation of some sort etc. Ok, it's a random mish-mash of two vaguely cool sounding words, but so is Skyfall in essence.

To Kill or Be Killed - I have no doubt this has been used elsewhere as a title, but so have other Bond titles in the past (including No Time To Die I believe). It sounds like it could be a Bond title.

    No idea apart from that.

Fleming was a newspaper man first, and he knew how to write a title. Almost everyone else who has tried to copy Fleming's preternatural ability to coin a title so has failed.

Well, they weren't meant by him to be Bond titles. That's the difference. So it's perhaps unfair to judge them as potential titles.

    Undertaker's Wind...too,,,gassy ?
The Name is Bond...goes in the dialogue, sure, but I hope never do they put the name in the title. TB was originally written as a script, with the ridiculously long description-rather-than-title "James Bond of the Secret Service", but, fortunately, never was it done.
Fear the Reaper...with Christopher Walken in it ? No matter what, the theme song will need more cowbell.
By the way, these comments say more about me and my own sophomoric reactions.
Indeed, running the titles through my mind, Fleming sure had a knack !

Might as well go with Nobody Lives Forever in that case.

The Bleeding Heart...would tie in well with some heartbreak on the part of one or more characters, with a henchman with a defect slowly killing him while they kill many (I know, rather like TWINE), and how Bond ultimately kills the villain (a la Dracula) and the villain's final line ("Until we meet again, Bond...in hell...")

How about some titles that are inspired by Fleming Titles ?
