  It's rather curious to see Osama bin Laden as a banned baby name in Germany but not "Adolf" or "Hitler" banned. I'd have thought that Hitler and the Nazis caused a lot more trouble in Germany than bin Laden ever did. Talk about getting their priorities right! It could be an example of that thing about Germany not facing up to its Nazi past.
  
  However, I understand that the name Adolf which was very common in Germany when Hitler came to power became much less popular as a name after the end of World War II after the excesses of the regime and the horror of the Holocaust became fully apparent. However, neo-Nazis do still exist and operate in Germany and many other countries, so there is always the possibility of the name continuing to be used. I do recall a case some years ago in the United States involving the use of Adolf Hitler as a name for the child of a neo-Nazi couple.

  The name Hitler is not considered a first name and would be rejected by German registrars since it is suitable and likely to endanger the child's welfare and best interests. The name Adolf is legal, but it is a regular first name that has been around for probably over a thousand years, and which was much in fashion in the late 19th century and (with an unsurprising but short-lived rebound in the 1930s) basically totally went out of fashion in the 20th, even before the end of the 3rd Reich. Chances are there is maybe one child in 100,000 that is given that name today. I never ever met anybody that was my age or younger that was actually named Adolf. As far as I can see, even among neo-Nazi politicians there is no-one wiith that name that I heard or read about.
  
  But this is rather leading away from "007 References in Popular Culture". By the way, you couldn't call your child "007" in Germany either, nor any other number.

  Well, that's good to know. I had hoped/suspected that would've been the case in reality. I get that Adolf is just an ordinary German name but, as you say, it does now have very negative connotations. Just to be clear, I was thinking more of parents trying to call their baby, say, Adolf Hitler Schmidt with "Hitler" being the middle name. I could see parents possibly trying to get around the rules that way but ultimately failing. I imagine that wouldn't fly with the German registrars either, for obvious reasons but I think it is the sort of thing that that American neo-Nazi couple I referred to were trying to do. I suppose that neo-Nazi politicians don't want to be that obvious or on the nose but there are a lot of nuts among their followers who might want to name a baby Adolf Hitler. Neo-Nazis might think it "sacrilegious" to name themselves after their founder Adolf Hitler. Anyway, I too am happy for the thread to move back to the subject it was originally intended for and away from images of babies with toothbrush moustaches! :)

  I remember seeing that story on the front page of that bastion of British journalism and thought, the Daily Star, a while back. That is a very unfortunate name for a politician who is presumably only trying to good for the people who elected him. It's funny that he's been a councillor since 2004 and the story only broke in 2021. It must've been a very slow news day! 🐌

  @Gerard, I knew about the alphabetical naming of dogs in France from friends. Does it only apply to pedigrees? So you could name a mutt anything you wanted?

  For Pedigreed dogs, that's mandatory, for mutt, that's optional. But most people prefer to name their dogs with a name starting with the letter of the year, wether the dog is pedigreed or not. For example, in 1976, when we got the family dog, we named him Nemo because that was the year of the N. But he was not a pedigree dog. But we loved him a lot.

  The April 11th edition of the London Sunday Times has an interview with director Paul Verhoeven, who mentions Bond:

  No. You see, until very recently, X was part of the six letters that were banned from the list (the others being K, Q, W, Y and Z). But now, you can use those letters in the same year as the authorized one that precedes them. So, in 2024, it will be possible to use X, W,, Y and Z :

  That's cool they're putting that into practice. I was wondering if people ever got a chance to name their pets beginning with one of those less common letters. It seems like a very particular tradition, but as with all traditions it obviously started for some reason.

  A Bond reference in this week's Times Literary Supplement, from a disturbing review of Red Carpet: Hollywood, China, and the global battle for cultural supremacy, by Erich Schwartzel:
  

  American studios increasingly sought to ingratiate themselves [with the Chinese government] -– a level of obeisance that has ensured that, since the late-1990s, Hollywood rarely dared to produce a film in which China is cast as the villain. In 2012 alone, to make it past the censors for the Chinese market, the producers of Skyfall cut a scene in which a Chinese guard dies, Cloud Atlas lost its gay romance strand, Django Unchained hid Jamie Foxx’s penis, Men in Black 3 erased its memory-erasing gadget (which could have been viewed as “a metaphor for authoritarian control”), and Red Dawn –- a reboot of the 1984 film which features a United States invaded by the Soviet Union and its allies -– was hurriedly re-edited to turn its Chinese baddies into North Koreans, after MGM feared China might retaliate by blacklisting the studio’s highly profitable James Bond franchise.
  
  Many of these decisions are based on self-censorship (studios circulate unofficial lists of themes, such as ghosts, that won’t be acceptable in China), though sometimes China has a more direct hand in proceedings. In 2014 the director Michael Bay went to Beijing to discuss his latest film, Transformers: Age of extinction. A scene at the end involved Hong Kong being trashed by killer robots before Americans show up to save the day. What if, the Chinese film bureau suggested, China turned up to the rescue first? The script was rewritten. “For the first time since Hollywood’s founding, creative decisions at the root level of moviemaking-– casting, storylines and dialogue –- were being made with China, not America, first in mind”, Schwartzel writes.
  
  This approach is premissed on the idea that Chinese audiences are easily fooled by blatant pandering. The same strategy underpinned the US–China co-production The Great Wall (2016), directed by Zhang Yimou and featuring Matt Damon as a mercenary, battling monsters during the Song dynasty. It bombed in both territories. Meanwhile, as American studios were wringing their hands about how to please the Chinese, China’s own studios were learning how to construct blockbuster hits for their audiences. They found their own Captain America in Wolf Warrior 2 (2017), a tale of a Chinese super-soldier defending an unnamed African country from a ruthless American mercenary. It stormed the Chinese box office with $854 million in takings.
  
  ...Today, the franchise is the preeminent vehicle for blockbuster cinema: films that deal with grand themes of morality, apocalyptic threat and supernatural power, bursting with laser-shooting robots and kung-fu pandas; films that, crucially, tend to be stripped of just enough historical and political context to be able to safely play in any market. Hollywood, Schwartzel writes, was once “America’s most persuasive evangelist”. Now, financial considerations mean it “remains beholden to another country”.

  A taste of home sends Sam on a mission to find his mom, with Guy and E.B. in tow. But a plot twist takes their story in a wildly different direction.

  Sam and his friends manage to find Sam's mother, Pam, who is a spy working for the nation of Yookia as they and the nation of Zookia are at war and they are dragged on to her mission.

  Sam shadows Pam on a super-secret mission, even though she'd rather work alone. In tech-loving Zookia, Guy finds an inventor's paradise.

  Three Days of the Mom-dor
  Sam goes with his mother to retrieve a mysterious object called the Moo-Laka-Moo while Guy and E.B. end up and Zookia and see their side of things, culminating in Guy getting an inventing job.

  To Yookia With Love
  E.B. and Looka have a night out together that soon ends up with them finding out how the conflict between Yookia and Zookia was instigated.

  You Only Mom Twice
  Guy finds out from a letter from Michelee that she's going to have another kid while Sam and Pam end up in a jungle that manipulates time and age.

  Guyfall
  When E.B. tells Guy about Looka, Guy causes him to be arrested, upsetting E.B. Soon though, they reunite with Sam and Pam where tensions mount when Guy becomes suspicious of Pam's intentions.

  The Sam Who Came in From the Cold
  When Pam delivers the Moo-Laka-Moo to the Yookia Dook, her plans to live a life with Sam becomes derailed when Sam realizes that the Moo-Laka-Moo will be used to destroy Zookia.

  On Her Dookess' Secret Service
  Guy resolves to dismantle his weapon against the Yooks and a pregnant Michellee helps him. Sam tries to steal the Moo-Laka-Moo back.

  The Mom Who Loved Me
  The ultimate battle between Yookia and Zookia comes down to both of them launching rockets at each other, Michellee going into labor and Sam and Pam's realtionship being tested.

  It's a very common mistake in the media sadly and has even cropped up on the back cover blurb of the UK Panther paperback of Christopher Wood's James Bond, The Spy Who Loved Me (1977):
