Ideas/concept of future Bond gadgets ?

I open a thread for imagining some concept for gadgets for James Bond, and imagine clever way to use it. It could be hard to imagine new gadgets in 2022 when our cell phones are already one their own and good ideas have already been used in previous games/movies.

So with what we could come up?

While waiting your ideas, some things I imagined back in the day (was for a video game, but work for films too).

- A mini flying drone in the shape of a dragonfly (or other insect). Would thus allow to gain height to study the location of the guards/patrols, self-destruction function with C4.

- You can hardly escape it: a telephone. To hack stuff with a mini-game, see the screens of hacked surveillance cameras, or see the camera of the mini-drone, take pictures, amplifier to listen to conversations from afar. It would also be the pause menu (review information, objectives, inventory, etc.). We could also change this: at the time Bond was the king of the gadgest so replacing the phone with a connected watch would not be totally wrong and it's quite astonishing that Bond never had one (I guess the money dropped by Omega and purist fans of needle watches have hitherto prevented an evolution that would had been so logical in Roger Moore aera).

- Explosive breach charge: like the perk in Deux Ex which allows you to break a wall. Gadget used to destroy a wall (and therefore create an alternate path and eliminate what is behind). Detonator on the watch. At some point in the game, Q might give out an improved thermite (quieter) version.

- A one or two shot weapon that easily passes metal detectors or searches (sometimes it's the only one Bond can carry/keep). We can imagine a fountain pen where the projectile is the feather that is propelled like a bullet or even a blowpipe disguised as an electronic cigarette (I like the fact that it reconnects with the smoking Bond).

- A pen that turns into a telescopic baton.

- A tranquilizer dart gun.

- A gadget that allows you to unlock doors with a small game of picking. Could lock some too (limit to one use so as not to abuse it, locking melts the device): it would be fun in pursuit of locking a door and forcing opponents to either destroy it with their weapons or bypass to enter through another door.

- A gadget that makes noise to distract/attract enemies.

- Sun glasses which hide night vision and thermal vision, see X-ray (in Hitman there is a function to see through walls, here is what would make this kind of function for assisted players more "acceptable"), protect against flashbangs. (Can be used to cheat in the casino by seeing through the cards of the adversary for those who have difficulty?). Sunglass could be remplaced by contact lens, with differents color (when night vision is activated, Bond eyes looks greens for exemples).

- Kevlar tuxedo/suit (reduces the number of damage per bullet).

- In Goldfinger, Fleming writes that Bond carries a knife hidden in the heels of his shoes. Perhaps it would be good to provide Bond with a blade (hidden for example in the belt, the belt buckle)?

- In a mission that requires an assault, Q could provide a Cornershot for Bond (see how this could fit into the controls of a video game).

- Laser projection keyboard (the interest is very limited so apart from just being used in a cutscene I don't see what we could do with it, but it would look a bit classy to see this kind of keyboard in a cutscene).

- Taser signet ring: basically an electrified brass knuckles.

- Cufflinks (there's definitely something to do with it, like a grenade).

- Strobe light mounted on a rifle/pistol (should be limited to a few seconds of use because of the health effects, like if it say it uses a lot of battery, but it might be nice to have one on one occasion or find yourself facing opponents equipped with it).

- In the non-usable gadgets category, it might be nice that in Q-lab we can see technicians or Q himself working on gadgets for women: lipstick which turns out to be a switchblade knife, radio powder compact, flamethrower perfume, submachinegun hair dryer, explosive pads, handbag equipped like the case of FRLW...

And of course there is some car gadgets, like a front grapling-hook that can be shoot fast to, or a gadget that drop/break the front glass and make appears from above the hood a machine-gun for the passager (James Bond Girl) to shoot like :

Also, I like this abandoned drone concept of NTTD :

If in mid-air the drone can restract its wings (like as it firing state) and transform to a propeled missile, would be the sommum of cool!

That’s very cool, I’ve never seen that concept art before. It is nicked from the Benson books, but a car-deployed drone does make a lot of sense, both as a weapon and as a spy tool.
I always thought one way for a car gadget to go would be an off-road mode: so Bond flicks a switch and the car raises itself on its suspension, maybe the tyres somehow inflate to off-road versions, bull bars flip out at the front etc. and his sportscar is now able to escape over rough terrain.

I had a similar idea where the car (probably a 4x4) has extendable axles that grow into huge arms, with spikes that come out of the tyres for grip, and the car walks over difficult terrain like a giant insect.

Sad to see another prop made but underutilized. In the film, the Q-Drone can just be seen, in his home, up on the shelf above the glider blueprints. Moneypenny looks up at it.

There was also a swarm of drones released from a Univex truck in one of the Dynamite comics.

    Cheers for the concepts.

Like the idea of cross-contry car, but a car that is already a 4x4 is nice too. It was nice to drive the Bond's Porsche Cayenne in EON.

It's been a long time since Bond used a bug detector, let's see a return of him searching his suite again. Not with his phone though, something more novel. Maybe a safety razor or even better, a Dunhill Broadboy.

Maybe the bugs have all gone online these days? ;)

    Adrenaline shots.

The modern equivalent of the literary Bond's champagne and Benzedrine?

Some of them like to migrate here.

How about Bond having a soft pack of Morlands like in Black Box or Hammerhead (can't remember which) and a couple of them are sticks of dynamite. Simply light it and plant.

He's sort of done that in LTK, and in YOLT of course he had a gun in a cigarette.

I remember reading in Adrian Turner's A-Z book on Goldfinger that some of the Morland Specials cigarettes contained small clumps or impurities in the tobacco and that lighting them could make them go off like a firecracker, without the addition of any explosives! It all builds on the idea Fleming had to assassinate Castro by putting a stick of dynamite in one of his famous Cuban cigars. I'm pretty sure that that was just one of the 638 Ways to Kill Castro tried out by the CIA.

A dynamique cigarette, that's cool. A boost shoot too. Make sens to not have the bug innthe phone, in case you go somewhere where security take your phone.

Was thinking about the fact there is not very much difference between the looks of theses two object :

Maybe not very natural to have a calcultar on you, but if you have a business man cover...

The packaging would be a soft pack so you can hide two or three sticks of dynamite in the back, with those being distinguished from the regular smokes by having three red rings instead of gold.

The layout looks a lot like Q's calculator from LTK, a project I'm currently working on! 🤙

The drone from the car is a really neat idea. That said I think the problem is that if it was used in NTTD it'd simply have an explosive attached to it. I think more can be done with it. Obviously such a device would allow Bond to get visuals on hard to access areas, perhaps allow him to attain objects etc.

    A Taser Watch.

For me that’s a definite no-go. A smartwatch, to most watch enthusiasts, is not a watch.

Might be functional for running or for those who have to keep an eye on their heart rate. I won’t argue with that.

But Bond is an elegant fellow, he’d love his watch to be a timeless mechanical piece. A watch that works as long as his own heart still beats.

Just as much as with classic cars, it’s that affection for meticulous craftsmanship, carefully designed handwork, and the passion for timelessness.

Smartwatch is a decent contemporary take on a classic gimmick though, albeit somewhat uninteresting.

That's sort of the problem with Bond gadgets in the modern era generally. Everyone has these extremely powerful gadgets now on their wrists, in their pockets. They'll really have to think outside the box to keep things interesting.

Or just turn random household objects into guns/bombs/lasers. Wouldn't mind a return of the laser watch. I think Goldeneye has my favourite Bond gadgets... but it might be because it was my first ever Bond film.

I love how they take existing items and add parts like in GE, MR etc. and make the original item almost unrecognizable. They've done this in the Craig era too. I've stumbled across some off-the-shelf items and thought, with just a little modifying, would make a cool gadget.

I'd like the tobacciana gadgets to make a return. When was the last time? TND's lighter grenade, as far as films go. Hmm, too long ago.

I also want to see the gadgets in more colourful livery. Black and silver gets a bit boring after a while. This was perhaps most common in the Dalton & Craig eras, while Brosnan had many green toys.

I always find the most satisfying gadgets are the ones which take something from the form of the object they're 'hiding' as and use it for a new purpose- so for me the best gadget is probably the LALD watch buzzsaw, where the watch bezel becomes a spinning blade. That's lovely. So I'd like more like that, not just a button on the side of any old object.

Yeah, they're great. We didn't get much of that at all with the Craig films. I think Roger's era best demonstrates these concealed gadgets. Bathroom accessories seem to be pretty common items to house something in.

Yes Craig didn't have very satisfying gadgets- just buttons on things. I wonder if they should let the props and design department come up with the ideas for them more, just because they're more 3D and design-minded. Perhaps they do, I don't know. I think the stunts dept. were coming up with ideas for gadgets for the DB5 in NTTD.

The Spectre watch was quite nice, with the flashing red indices and the backwards-counting hands. Not a bad bit of functional repurposing of an existing design, but just a bomb in the end.

The SP watch had the red lights and hands CGI'd on. Not really a fan of them doing that, when in the past they would add real LEDs and hide the wiring up his sleeve. I was pleased to see Craig finally get a watch gadget though, even if it's one he can't return in one piece!

Daniel Craig's Bond was more of a hands-on guy who did throw away keys and mobile phones once they were not needed anymore. Complicated little gadgets did not suit him, in my opinion.
The fully updated DB5, on the other hand, was a man's war-toy, fully in line with Craigs brutalist approach to the role.

This video shows Craig throwing stuff (and saying "thank you" rather a lot).

I had an idea a while back that he should have ordinary hi-tech gadgets (smartphones, earpieces) that double as primitive weapons. A shiv in his phone, or an earpieces that can explode when thrown (maybe a bit dangerous, that one, but you get the idea).

It could be a fun reversal of the classic type of gadget.
