Yes I think he would be... fine. And I could probably convince myself that I was even surprised that he was better than I thought he'd be if he did it, but I don't see much that he's done that makes me think he'd be a step forward. I did think he was decent in Fallout, but equally I thought he was a lumpen dead weight in UNCLE. Not a disaster, but not a movie star.
He'd be better than some of the choices as he is I guess to some extent a safe pair of hands. But it's a pretty dull pair of hands too.

    How about Matthew Goode?

I quite like Mathew Goode, but he's 42 years old, which is a shame because he's ageing a bit and it actually suits him.

He looks the part, but those clips are too cheesey.

Those eyes are a bit on the crazy side, worse than Dornan's, I think.

Sir Roger was 46 in LALD.

A few people were talking in work today about Cavill being perfect for Bond, and I don't know what it is I just don't understand it. Sure he is a handsome man, who has the right physicality for the role but no offence the guy is a huge step down from Craig as an actor and he has close to nothing in screen presence. I think it would be a huge step down for the series. He would be an okay cinematic Bond (in the style of Brosnan or even Sir Roger) but he wouldn't bring the character to life on screen, with the rich layers of contradictions and believability that say Connery, Dalton and Craig have all brought to the role. Which I think as the series has evolved since Casino the character deserves

I mean I've sort of resigned myself to the fact that whoever is chosen next will be a bit of a step down from Craig (at least for me) but surely they have to look further than the obvious easy choice?

I think we shouldn't look at it as step down but in a different direction. It has always been like that,

    Sean-Roger-Pierce (Cinematic bond)

    George-Timothy- Daniel (Book Bond).

You are right, and I'd love it if they went back to those age groups and to the "experienced" agent episodic nature of the first films (even with slight continuity). But they won't.
  • Just seen Cavill in Enola Holmes... he doesn't have a lot of screentime, but still - there is not much memorable about his performance as Sherlock Holmes (to be fair, the material he's given is not great. Sam Claflin as Mycroft has a juicier role).

Cavill won't be Bond but I think he has plenty of presence. He doesn't have much emotional range as an actor, for sure, but he does have presence on screen. It's why I think he has been (for me, at least) or surely could be the best Superman if they wrote a script that played to his strengths as a performer. It's why he was good in The Witcher, and why people liked him in Mission Impossible: Fallout. He's also generally a likeable dude too, which helps.

For Bond though, no. I'm not sure it's enough. I often wonder what he would have been like as Bond, but I think Craig has spoiled us a little bit and we will want someone close in ability to him as an actor.

    My thoughts exactly.

I know some chuckle at this, and yes endless photos can be found of him in “ pop entertainer mode “ that are very far from Bond , but for some time I’ve seen something in Harry Styles that makes me think, with a bit more age, that he could make a dynamic Bond for a new generation; if a new 007 debuts in 5 years he’ll be 31, perfect. He’s tall has a great speaking voice, charisma and charm to spare and when in “serious mode” has a great , intense look.

If Nolan is eventually in the mix, I wouldn’t count Styles out of the running.

Another thing, while friends say other wise he denies speaking to Bond reps, and does not even discuss if he has any interest, a sure indication that he is in the running and knows to keep his mouth shut.

I don’t think that’s the case. Sure, he’s not gonna tell the press he’s been approached, but at the same time that means actors can never deny anything? And I’d say it’s a bit of reach to say that by him denying it it means he’s being considered.

Anyway, while EON may have a list about somewhere, I can’t imagine EON have approached anyone to seriously talk about the role.

He’s not an actor. He‘s an (successful and yes rich pop star) X Factor clown that now wants to be an actor.

I think that’s a bit harsh. While I was never a fan of him during his 1D, I kinda like his new music, and I’m quite excited to see him opposite Florence Pugh and Dakota Johnson in Don’t Worry Darling. Always interesting to see how new actors do, as much as I don’t think he’ll ever be right for 007.

Many quality actors had pop entertainer backgrounds, Nolan has noticed him and he’s working on his acting skills and has been up for and is landing high profile acting gigs As I’ve said, the traffic signal needs to be green when you get to it, not when you’re a block away. ;)

Toward the lower third of this article, Christopher Nolan discussed casting Styles.

And that may , or may not be a consideration; it didn’t keep him from being cast as, and convincingly portraying a WW2 soldier.

I don't know his music and wasn't exposed to his pop-life. I know nothing about him.

But judging him as an actor and his screen presence, have you seen Dunkirk @DoctorClatterhand ?

Once again, knowing nothing about Stiles (other than he was a singer that I could not possibly name a song he's sung), and judging him on what I saw in Dunkirk, he was noticeably a strong presence on the screen.

I don't know if he would make a good Bond, but judging from the one thing I've seen him in, he has traits that could be molded into a new 007 a few years down the road. If this was between a Cavil type and Stiles, my vote would go for the more interesting and potentially more compelling personality-- Stiles.

@talos7 isn't being controversial at all. As North Americans, not really exposed to Harry's pop-star life, perhaps we're more open to this suggestion and at least see the potential in him (since we're not weighed down by his past boy-band image)?

    I don't know.

I'm mad for the man still wearing the tux, so for me this is just a fun conversation. I am more than happy to ride out the next six months having Daniel Craig as the reigning 007.
  • Yes, I saw him in Dunkirk. I was only (half) joking. He wears some really quite bizarre outfits and I seriously think this rules him out in the eyes of EoN. I don't mind at all, as I'm extremely broad-minded. He's got a swagger and confidence that would be great for Bond. Great screen presence too.

@DoctorClatterhand "swagger and confidence"-- something Craig has in spades (with talent to spare). That's what concerns me about most of the names mentioned thus far. If they have talent, they lack that swagger. Some may have swagger, but lack the talent.

In the end, casting after Craig will be quite a job!

    Thanks @peter
I don’t know if he would make a good Bond, but I see something in him.
As far as being aware of his pop background, I have a 23 year old daughter who is an immense fan, so I know quite a bit about his pop standing.
My Daughter is also a huge Bond fan; I raised her right. Lol. She is part of the future Bond fan base. She’s is very honest and realistic about the casting of a future Bond and would not want one cast simply because she likes him as a pop performer. She sees potential and absolutely thinks Styles deserves a shot at the role

@talos7 -- we do our best in bringing up our children: there are the A, B, Cs and the 1, 2, 3s...

    That can wait, because--

Watch this intro-scene of Sean Connery... see how he lights that cigarette? (lol!)

    All joking aside--

Like you, I don't know if Harry's Bond, but I don't dismiss the way he held attention on the screen in Dunkirk.

Even if he's not Bond, what he has are indicators of what the next Bond should be. Talent, Confidence, Swagger... also-- something not a lot talk about-- likability on the macro... Does the new guy exude a charm that most (not all-- that'll never happen), but most will find appealing?

I really don't get how "bizarre outfits" rule someone out as Bond. Seriously? I already get frustrated at the people who say you can't have an actor whose gay, so to now hear people suggest someones personal choice in fashion would halt someones chances (Harry Styles or not) is ridiculous.

Anyway, while I don't think he'd be a good fit for Bond, I could see him producing a good theme for a future film. The guy is very versatile when it comes to music.

    This thread is absolutely bizarre.

It's gone from, "Daniel Craig is the most amazing actor...how will we ever replace him? Not even a household name actor like Henry Cavill is good enough to fill his shoes", to "Harry Styles is a viable contender" in a matter of hours.

I think, @FatherValentine , that @talos7 and myself clearly stated: who knows if this guy is Bond. I don't think anyone said he was a viable candidate. If I missed that, my bad.

But, he has traits that could make a fine Bond.

Differentiate between an absolute and musings about positive traits.

And, to be clear: I don't care who the next Bond is; I enjoy this thread to see if one of the many suggestions strikes a chord in me.

To date, I am very happy to ride out the net 6 months with Craig (and yes, good luck replacing him with Cavill-- or whomever)

FWIW, while Styles didn't make too much of an impression on me in Dunkirk personally, it's not like musicians have never made a transition to the big screen very successfully before. Just look at someone like Jared Leto, for example.

An interesting proposition. Certainly makes one think.

Who from X Factor and other reality TV shows has become a plausible and viable Hollywood actor???

I know what your saying, but there are literally hundreds of talented actors who don’t need to ‘work on their craft’ as their already talented actors. So why consider a pop star/ reality tv personality. The past tells us they don’t make good actors.

I admit I haven’t seen Dunkirk. The honest truth is my wife and I couldn’t take it seriously when we saw Styles on the cast list.

He might be the one off reality tv person that is a naturally great actor, but there is a stigma around association to this ‘tacky’ form of modern entertainment that may well put off cinema go’ers such as myself.

Yeah I like the slightly out of the box suggestions, makes it more interesting and makes me consider what Bond is.
Styles just hasn’t done enough at this point for me to think he could, but I couldn’t rule him out forever. Sounds like he may well do more movies.
This thread lit up with folks getting excited about the idea of David Gandy playing it a few pages back, Styles seems more realistic than that at least.
