Quentin Tarantino on Brosnan as Bond:
…And it turns out Tarantino had a few things to say about the James Bond actors.

Tarantino said: “Sean Connery, Pierce Brosnan, then just a little under him, Roger Moore.
“And then everybody else. Connery’s at the top, but I really, really like Pierce Brosnan.

“I didn’t care for the movies that they put him in, which I always thought was a bit of a tragedy, because I thought he was a very legitimate Bond.

Speaking with Daily Mail last year, Brosnan said that bar Goldeneye his take on Bond was “never good enough.”

He said: “I was caught between Sean Connery’s Bond and Roger Moore’s Bond, and it was only really in Goldeneye that I did my Bond.”

Interesting. Well I'd never put Brosnan above Sir Roger - not as Bond anyway. Tarantino seems to be ranking his favourite actors more than his favourite Bonds.

I have some sympathy for what Tarantino is saying though. The Brosnan era films are all pretty awful, but I've seen Brosnan giving a strong enough performance in other films to believe that he could have done a good Bond movie, with the right script and direction. Brosnan definitely needs good/firm direction. Look how his performances improve when he's being directed by someone like Polanski or Boorman - he's almost unrecognisable from when he's playing Bond.

I think if Tarantino was to direct a Bond film then Brosnan would have been the right fit. Shame we will never see it. I'd have liked a period Bond film as well.

Pretty much agree with Brosnan's views on his own tenure as well, which he's expressed in previous interviews. Feel sorry for him in a way. I don't think EON ever particularly rated him and they certainly never really tried to mould him or his films to his strengths as an actor. The films just degenerated in quality as if EON had given up on him.

Probably the low point in the history of EON and cinematic Bond, but I guess it was a transition period. Brozza probably deserved better.

You make a good point about Brosnan and direction - in my opinion he is either brilliant or awful in his performances.

I wonder if Pierce known how much he is loved in Africa(at least in Mozambique, South Africa, Angola) he is the Bond.

    Any theory as to why?

I personally really enjoy the Brosnan films, but they could easily have been even better. It's a shame he never got a better script to work with, and better direction - just like it's a shame Dalton only got two films.

I think Brosnan's tenure is more memorable than Dalton's and GE is far above TLD and LTK for sure. I wouldn't rank him above Moore no way, but Tarantino's praise for him as Bond is totally correct.

I agree that GE tops both Dalton’s films, even though that’s not a popular opinion on this site. His tenure however is collectively the weakest IMO. I found GE excellent, TND decent, TWINE mixed (can be better or worse depending on the day), and DAD weak. TLD and LTK are both mostly solid.

I know. But, Bond girls are more memorable, the villains are better, and the action is more exciting. Not to mention Bond's interactions with M and Moneypenny being superior and still quotable. That's my stance.

Action more exciting in GE than LTK? I must get the number of your occulist. Even those who don't like LTK tend to regard it as having some of the best action in the series.

While the interactions with Bond and MP in Dalton's films aren't particularly memorable they're also not cringe-inducing like the sexist, misogynist dinosaur speech. Not to mention the Brosnan-Samantha Bond MP byplay is nothing more than smut talk and far from sexy in their films together.

I have to say I’m not a fan of Moneypenny in the Brosnan films. I thought Brosnan’s chemistry with M and Q were spot-on, but the Moneypenny interaction was the weakest of the franchise in his tenure.

I really like the interactions between Bond and Moneypenny in the Brosnan era. In fact I look forward to them when watching the Brosnan films.

Yea IDK what people are smoking, their interactions were great.

Time to throw that cigar in the trash like Miss Moneypenny did.

Because he is the best Bond ever.

It was under Ben Affleck that Timothy Dalton was looked at for Alfred.

Very cool interview, and what a badass style Brosnan has there:

His 3 favorite Bond films (according to this video) are FRWL, GE and SF. 3 great choices.

I like Pierce but to lose the role once may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose it twice just looks like carelessness.

Also who is the "other man" who "fell down" playing Bond? Obviously he's referring to Dalton but this is a slightly graceless comment.

How is Brosnan losing the role his fault? Are you just that desperate in your hatred of his performance that you'll say anything to drag his name into the dirt?

He was clearly referring to Lazenby. Given he was listing the Bond actors in chronological order and had some drama with him in the past. Don't make up lies to further your agenda.
