Second place for me, after MR, might be (another?) controversial choice: CR67. Again, the music makes all the difference. In fact, it might be the only thing truly consistent about the film. But Bacharach's score is so powerful, I love it endlessly. Then there are those typical 60's 'futuristic' sets, especially in Dr. Noah's place, with those delicious rotating chambers and whatnot. And Vesper's apartment is exactly the kind of place where I would want to live. Though the film itself is a mess, a guilty - VERY guilty - pleasure at best, I think it's also an incredibly cosy, atmospheric film.

I think LALD has a B movie charm than few Bond movies have. I do hope we will have one or two like this, but I guess now the franchise is too big.
  • It was pretty darn big in 1973, too.

It would have to be MR for me. Barry's magnificent score pulls me into 'space' from the PTS's first few seconds. The music we hear when the two shuttle thieves appear is enough to make me feel like I'm floating amongst the stars. The main theme of the film is another victory IMO. The smooth, sexy musical outlines of that song continuously remind me throughout the film that we will end up in space. Even in California, Venice or Brazil, MR pulls me in a 'spacey' adventure. I adore MR's atmosphere and I'm not ashamed to admit that.

Seconded. I also like TLD's atmosphere. It feels like the Cold War.

LALD still had a B movie feel. So did TMWTGG.

The music is easily the best thing in CR67

GF for me, but I do not disagree with OHMSS either.

I've only seen CR67 once, and once was more than enough.

Hmmm. Once Is More Than Enough--the title for B24, mayhap?

I like the sound of it, @Perilagu_Khan, even if it also ends on 'enough'. ;-)

'Atmosphere' is many things- location, photography, art direction, etc. But when talking Bond, one name surfaces as the single greatest contributor to atmosphere: John Barry.

Why is no one mentioning OHMSS?

In my opinion the only true 'Christmas/Winter-Bond film'. Every aspect of winter, of the December month, of ski-ing, Olympics, Christmas, New Year: It all surrounded an already great story.

To a lesser extend......seeing Bond on ice again in Skyfall was also great 'winter-y' ;).
  • I agree with chris and G_G. And coincidentally, Barry may have done his very best work in OHMSS.

Atmospheric is what Skyfall not be. It is what i missing with Macau. Rushed/to short by times. Scotland be Atmospheric.

FRWL, Yolt, OHMSS, TMWTGG, TSWLM, FYEO, Octopussy, TLD, Twine and QOS are the moost Atmospheric i think. Die Another Day be moost cold Atmospheric. TMND, CR and LTK have some Atmospheric highlights.

  • Moonraker would be a #1 pick, but others worthy of battling for top honor would include Live and Let Die, Octopussy, On Her Majestys Secret Service, Casino Royale

I chose Moonraker as it has the best score of the entire series and viewers may experience a multitude of feelings while watching, such as sadness, jubilation, humor, disbelief, excitement, suspense and euphoria for example. Yes it's atmospheric in the extreme

    Or rage!

But I do have to agree that MR does a good job of drawing you into its wonderfully ridiculous world

I too have to say Moonraker, for the same reasons stated by Dark Lord Dimi. First thing that sprang to mind. Hauntingly atmospheric, as it should be.

I watched OHMSS on Friday night for the first time in a while and thought it has some great atmosphere, the Gumbold safe cracking sequence with a particularly tense cue from Barry. I would have to a agree Barry certainly is the greatest proponent of what makes Bond atmospheric and all the earlier films up to Majestys have a good percentage of it. Watching it again for me it just stands out, I can see why yet again this remains no. 1 for me.

DAF is about as atmospheric as a paper bag despite having a cracking score, I'll put that down to Guy Hamilton, seeing that LALD is pretty lacking in atmosphere as well.

Skyfall and CR have a good share of atmosphere without Barry's involvement and QOS is not lacking as well. As for Brosnan being atmospheric I just don't see it, caught the end of TND a few nights back, woefully embarrassing.
