    Tom Cruise is a great actor. Remember that run in the 1990s when he did a Kubrick film and then Magnolia. He has the goods. I just think he's become a bit reliant on franchise films. Especially with such dreck as The Mummy...

    Who would win in a fight against Craig's Bond vs Ethan Hunt? I think Bond hand's down. This guy has the scrappiest fights on cranes, planes, helicopters about 500ft in the air. He's reckless.

    I definitely would give the edge to Craig's Bond but it would be an epic fight.

    Hand to hand? Bond has it. Comfortably, I'd imagine. Hunt's got some extreme driving skills though.

    I think that's an issue (and probably more prevalent in MI than JB) because it's a way of keeping it non-political and without portraying another country (or religion) as an enemy but still on the side of vaguely believable without going to super-rich supervillains on private islands.

    You're saying every time they say him going rogue is a new idea and breaking the formula? They don't do that, no; it doesn't happen.

    I prefer Bond, and it's because of DC. And though many do not like it, EON's strategic move to make Bond a little more human and relatable, with an acknowledged backstory, has been huge. Sure, EON was taking a page out of the Marvel playbook, but it's a step in the right direction.

    Surely Eon had headed down this path before Marvel movies started?

    Don't be silly. He's a very well-established movie star (since before quite a few people on this board were born! :) ) for a good reason.

    He should have won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Magnolia. Got robbed on that.

    He was very good in Born on the Fourth of July, Rain Man, The Last Samurai, Jerry Maguire, Vanilla Sky (one of my all time guilty pleasures), Minority Report, and Collateral.And then there's Tropic Thunder, which is a whole new level of "Tom Cruise." LOL

    He says Vanilla Sky is his favourite film he’s been in. I haven’t seen it but want to check it out.

    If you love pop culture, you'll love Vanilla Sky. It's Cameron Crowe's ode to music and film, all wrapped up in a mind-bending thriller. The soundtrack is fantastic. The opening shot alone is West Side Story, Rosemary's Baby. John Lennon, and Radiohead all rolled into one (intentionally).

    I quite liked Knight and Day :) I found it a really funny twist on the genre.

    VANILLA SKY is embarrassingly bad.

    If you're interested in seeing the same story done well, check out the Spanish-language original (also co-starring Penelope Cruz), OPEN YOUR EYES.

    It's interesting, back when they both came out in 2012, i thought Skyfall was a way better film than DJango. But rewatching them recently, Django is now so much better than Skyfall it's not even a comparison.

    DJANGO is probably among my least favorite of Tarantino’s films. His next western THE HATEFUL EIGHT was much better.

    Agree with all of this. The marketing for the Mission Impossible films, though, is always centered around "What will Tom Cruise' Big Stunt Be This Time?" Whether it's scaling the Burj Khalifa, holding is breath all day, holding on to an aircraft, HALO jumping...

    True, but for this type of film what are they going to do focus on the more subtle moments? They might be overshadowed by the action set pieces but from deeply emotional to lightly comedic Tom has done some fine acting in the MI series.

    Agree on Magnolia. It's a great showcase of Cruise's versatility, and I've long said he should've won for Jerry McGuire too. He was the only one of the five nominated actors that year whose performance didn't require some type of physical characteristic that helped them stand out; Cruise didn't have that to fall back on.

    Agree again. Underrated film, excellent cast (Penelope Cruz aside) that you can watch again and again and discover new things each time out, which is something I love to do.

    Magnolia was the most pretentious movie I’ve ever seen. It’s just three hours of build up to raining frogs. But Cruise was pretty good in it, but he’s given better performances. He should have gotten at least a nod for supporting in RAIN MAN.

    That said, I think the comments on him being a stuntman is a reflection on the fact that he no longer chooses interesting projects like he did back in the 80s and 90s, when he wasn’t known for doing crazy stunts. That’s the Tom Cruise I miss.

    For me, FRWL, GF, TB, CR, and SF are a slight cut above the rest. Put them in any order you want. I still have SF as my top choice, but it's a subjective thing, and it grabbed me emotionally. DAF, TMWTGG, and LTK are my guilty pleasures: I know these are bad movies, but I love them for their pure b-movie silliness. Bottom line is, there are good arguments for almost every Bond film to be considered the "best"...except for maybe MR. ;)
