    Die Another Day

    What I like:
    - The pre-titles sequence
    - The sword fight
    - The Bond theme being used
    - The subtle references to the series history
    - "Then maybe it's time you stand aside and let me get on with my job."
    - The end of the car chase (how Bond evades Zao's broadsiding)
    - Q (yes, I like Cleese's sarcastic take on Q, nobody will top Llewellyn, but Cleese didn't try to copy his predecessor. i couldn't imagine Llewellyn's Q tradign bars with Bond in the same way
    - An Abandonned station for abandonned agents
    - "Global warming... is a terrible thing."
    - The scenes with Bond and Raoul

    What I didn't:
    - The title track
    - Madonna's cameo
    - "Yo mama" (make that Jinx's dialogue in general, no fault of Berry)
    - The speed ramping
    - The not so suble references to the series history
    - "Ahm checkin' art."
    - Bond doing a spot of tundra surfing, it's as bad now as it was in 2002

    Saw From Russia With Love last night.
    I don’t know how many times I seen this movie (but honestly, maybe more then 10!!).
    It was the first JB movie I saw in VHS in my birthday party (I think in 1982 – I was 8 years old) and since then it became an iconic movie for me.
    It’s a damn good espionage thriller and, although a not “over the top” JB Movie (which Goldfinger was much more) and very down to earth, still is in my TOP 10.
    Highlights:
    _Sean Connery is Agent 007!
    _The cast is superb, especially the villains (Rose Kleb, Grant, Kronsten but also Kerim Bey,M, Monneypenny ..)
    _Daniela Bianchi is very beautiful, and even not that much convincing as a SMERSH agent is just good to watch and funny (that scene when she is talking to the recorder aboard the boat in the Trieste is hollarious … “well once when I was in Tokio with M we had an interesting …” )!
    _Iconic moments in the series: Fight train with Grant + First glimpse of Ernst Stavro Blofeld (the cat, the ring,…) and the scenes with Kronsteen and Klebb + the gipsy camp fight + SPECTRE Island + etc etc
    _John Barry’s (first) OST and the lovely theme song
    Maybe they could have used more the Venice Locations but overall this a superb movie and JB at its best.
    next.. James Bond will return in TMWTGG.
  • I got so busy with the end of school and other stuff that my Bondathon completely stalled. It's hardly a Bondathon anymore at all! I'm gonna' try to finish the rest of the series up now that I've got some free time over the holidays and finally round out my (ever changing) ranking.

    I swear, solidifying that damn list is impossible. I may give up one day but the OCD in me refuses to give in.

    On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Skyfall. First the Christmasy Bond film and then the latest because I felt I should do so after replaying Bloodstone.

    The list never stops changing but that's the fun part about it. Times change, perspectives change and sometimes we see a Bond film in a new light. Such is the rich and diverse history of this series. Carry on with the rest of your reviews.

    Watched Moonraker with my fiancé two nights ago. I told her to brace herself and refill her wine as it was my least favorite and actually found myself enjoying it more than I remembered. Despite several goofy moments, most dealing with Jaws, there are tense moments as well, like the centrifuge, sniper in the trees, PTS, and I love Bond and Drax's final confrontation! "Heartbroken, Mr. Drax!"

    I might be one of very very few but Moonraker is my 2nd favorite Bond film of all time.

    I don't rank it that highly but I defend Moonraker as being under appreciated.

    I'm assuming the two of you weren't around when MOONRAKER was released. If that was what you got in the cinema after the two year wait since THE SPY WHO LOVED ME, you would be far less forgiving.

    No I wasn't. And I definitely prefer The Spy Who Loved Me. But I still really appreciate Moonraker and I don't think I should be handicapped by my age.

    You might be right. Perhaps most that were around for its release aren't too fond of it. Generally speaking though I don't think many younger folks are fond of it either. I wasn't a big fan the first few times I saw it but I just don't think I was watching it right.

    I've explained various times, I'm sure, why I really like and defend Moonraker on here but I definitely understand and respect opinions of those who dislike the movie.

    @Birdleson I understand that 100%. Obviously I can't relate to this particular incident but I understand you're point. What I'm trying to say is that, while definitely flawed, Moonraker isn't a misstep for the franchise. It's definitely an oddity, and I don't rank it quite in my top half, but I don't think it is a misstep or drop in quality for the series. If I'm making sense.

    With that being said, I'm talking of a misstep in quality and not in reception.

    Noteworthy:
    Biggest suprise: How much i enjoyed FYEO. I have always had it high up in like top 6 or 7, but then i found it less enjoyable for a while, before i now probably found it to be the one i enjoyed the most through the whole bondathon

    Biggest letdown: I was really looking forward to see AVTAK since i hadn't seen it in almost 3 years, but the things i thought would be very good (Zorin, soundtrack) fell short from what i expected. Don't get me wrong i still like Zorin and the soundtrack, but not as i would of hoped.

    Also:
    -The dalton movies are just getting more and more enjoyable for me as i get older. Wouldn't be suprised if they both climbed even more.
    -Skyfall is kinda a mixed bag for me sometimes i like it very much, sometimes it's just ok.

    I wanted to watch one Bond film on Christmas day.

    Decided on Moonraker

    It's like a beautifully presented Christmas dinner, but when you look a bit closer you can see the gristle in parts.

    Just finished watching Quantum Of Solace. And i keep loving it.
    CR still remains my Daniel Craig favourite movie but this one is also most satisfying.
    I understand the critics regarding the "shaky camera" action scenes and the "too fast" pace of the movie, compromising plot construction and character development.
    But everything else seems really inspired moviemaking.
    Highlights, for me:
    - the cinematography of the movie. This is trully THE "art house" JB movie of the series.
    The set designs, the costumes, the locations,... were all top!
    - David Arnold OST (not his best, but with some very fine moments);
    - a lot of action (car chase, boat chase, plane fight, etc etc), keeping the movie entertaining and not boring at all;
    - Mathis, a shame he had to die. A great character that could return in future movies;
    - all the references to Vesper really gives a dramatic and romantic feel to the movie;
    etc
    What i liked less in the movie:
    - the titles sequence and the title song;
    - Dominique Greene and Elvis (rather poor characters);
    - the editing on the action scenes could have been less "Bourne like" and more "Bond like".
    Overall, i think QoS is clearly above the average of JB films (in my opinion that is, of course!)

    Licence to Kill is bad ass and underrated also man bond keeps telling Q and Pam Bouvier to leave and yet they keep staying in isthmus do they just not pay attention to bond or do they just enjoy the isthmus park zoo.

    My mother wanted to see a Connery Bond film she hadn't watched before. She had seen the first four, so I put on YOLT for her. She fell asleep before the ending climax :))

    And I actually don't blame her. The film starts promising, but about half way through, about the time we get to the launch of the second space rocket, the ninja school, the marriage... it falls flat on its tail. And like Thunderball it suffers from sloppy editing in sections. For example we can't just be told that Spectre sends a space rocket from their secret volcano base, we have to watch a scene of several minutes of everything being sowly put into place before the launch. There is just to much of that needless overindulgence when the plot needs to move on. And a fabulous set can't hide the fact that the ending climax actually drags a bit... My father said he hates drawn out endings like that.

    @Birdleson what did you feel about OHMSS, when it came out and has that opinion changed? Im asking since you only mentioned the "great" 5 first in your post, and i would certainly put OHMSS in there as well.

    I couldn't disagree more with you. I wasn't around back 79' but as @ThighsOfXenia said, that is not reason enough for us to consider it less of a Bondmovie. In one of Calvin Dyson's recent videos he got asked about what other older Bondfans think's about he's opinions due to his age. That is something I see very often on here. Just because I'm a very young Bondfan doesn't mean I'm less of a fan than anyone who's followed the series since the 60's. Moonraker happens to be my absolute favourite movie. When I was at the FSWL-event in september I told John Glen that MR was indeed my personal favourite, and he thought I was joking. He also said that he had never met someone who ranked it right at the top before. Moonraker is the Bondfilm that get's the most shit. I can't see why really. It does not matter how old I am or anyone else here is, because in the end, we're all Bondfans.
  • Watched THE SPY WHO LOVED ME recently. Finally working my way through the series.

    Still a great Bond film and one of the better ones in the series without a doubt. I'll post up all my rankings when I've finished.

    So my copy of Goldeneye is broken but i have ordered a new copy and will get it with in a wek hope to watch it soon but here is my list so far minus that with explanations

    1. Casino Royale: still the best I just love this Film Daniel is great the card scene are brilliant the cast is brilliant The mysterious Mr White is brillioant (so happy and releived he is returning for Spectre) I mean there is nothing I don't like about this film i would of liked Quantum to have been named here maybe (or heck if mclory would of been nice introduce Spectre here)

    2. On her majesties secret service. this is really amazing and I enjoyed it far more then I expected a great classic film Blofield is brillian Lazenby does good quite good just not as good as Craig hence why this ias number 2 Had Dalton done this film it very well might of been number 1. Heck Dalton as bond from 69-89 that would of been awesome (in fact one could of shorten the bond era's to four... but that is besides the point)

    3. Quantum of Solace... Here is where the controversey's begin Look I love every bond film I do they have their strengths and their weaknesses (except for the top 2 films I just preffer royale over Service) and I want to start this few sentance review by discussing what I would change about this film.. 1. I would of included a bit more of the short story (character names etc) 2. I would of had a better editor 3. I would of done the plane jump for real or as real as I could. But outside of that the film is great I love the PTS I love the title song I love the interrogation with Mr White I love the stuff in haiti I love the Opera scene (best scene ever) I love Greene (though would of preffered him to be call Philip Masters..) I love White sure elvis is a crap henchmen but hey none of the Craig films besides perhaps Spectre had great henchmen right I mean Is Le Chiffe's right hand man really that interesting? or Patrice? no but ... Like I said I have put here at number 3 Largely because I keep hearing complaints about this film and i wouldn't be surprised if this one day sits at number 6 or 7.

    4. The living Daylights dark mysterious a great film all around. Dalton is superb and really doesn't get enough praise here in fact weirdly enough after rewatching the 80's bond films all of them are really good Wilson and Mailbum make an excelent screen writing team. Overall thias film is great and is very action packed yet is as spy orientated as From Russia with love in fact this is From Russia with lover with a bigger budget in my opinion and in all honesty it is better. (man MNy quantum choice is going to piss people off my views on the lviing daylights I am surprised no one puts out a hit on me.)

    5. Licence to kill I love this film and as I said in my mini Quantum review I feel that in a week or so I might just switch these films putting Licence to killy at number 3 and Quantum at number 5 because it's that hard to decide between the bottom 5 in my opninon Sanchez is great Krest is creepy Dalton is perfect Dario is criminally underused. using the unused elements of Live and Let Die was not only interesting but it was inspirid in my opninon. Proffesor Joe seems like a left over from the Moore era but isn't too out of place here. M is a jerk but meh in my opinino LTK solidfies that Lee and Brown are not the same M in myopnion Lee's M would of let him go on a personal mission and heck would of helped him as best he could.. at least that is how I feel.
    6. For Your eyes Only Moore at his absolute best Really a great cold war thriller I was surprisded at how very little one would have to change from this Octopussy or even A view to a kill to fit Dalton. what brings this film down for me is BIBI. a stupid annoying girl that really unless bond slept with had no barring on the plot I suppose it was to fufil the 3 hot bond girl quota but it feesl forced and weird.

    7. From Russia with love What can I say if not it's Connery's Best because it is the issue here is some of the action is a little slow paced and the boat scene is beyond ridiculous but oh well the fight in the orient express the gypsy camp and of course Bond's first threesome (seriously no one ever metions this at all ever in any review Bond has a threesome and we are just going to ignore it seriously!!!! I know this is family friendly and all that but come on..) Plus there is a reason the Bond Tataiana scene is used to test out new 007's and bond girls it is that well written and Kerim Bay is an ally I would of loved to see rebooted in the new Craig era.

    8. Octopussy this one surprised me does it have a bit too much humor yes but honestly it isn't bad at all. Thev writing is superb Moore plays it stragith for the most part Khamal Khan is actually quite interesting as is Octopussy herself. The rest of the cast are strong Gogol is a brilliant frienemey. the film just works brilliantly.

    9. The World is not enough Brosnan's best do far (though Goldeneye might change that) I love Renard and Elektra King Christmas isn't belieivalbe sure but she is so hot it makes up for it 10 fold. the finale in the sub is great. the casion scene leaves much to be desired for but Zurkofsky continues to be an entertaining ally I love the film.

    10. The Spy who loved me The hottest bond girl from the moore era the best henchmen from the Moore Era and Moore at his best so why so low. the plot is kind of silly the homages to Jaws are silly (but work FAR better then the homages to Star Wars) but over all this film is really just awesome.

    11. Live and let die I love this film from Moore to the girls to the action to the theme song the only low point JW Pepper and even he isnt that bad the Henchmen and Villians are great and overall inspite of a weak PTS the film is strong.

    12. Dr. No. I love Connery in this the editing and back projections are the issues As one reviewer said it's vanilla and indeed this film is it's not bad it's not great it's just kind of there the Opening shot of Connery is the best in my opinion and the killing of Dent.

    13. Tommorow never dies. I am surprised at how high this one ios but that is because its an amazing film Broswnan is really good the PTS is breath taking Carver is insane and delightful Gupta is a great Henchmen and Dr Koffman is just yeah awesome

    14. Skyfall this is really starting to grow on me I still feel the lack of locations hurts it but Finnes' Mallory and the rest of the mi6 team. I love the macau scenes and ther closing and opening sequences and silva is good but again a lack of locations kinda ruins it for me. However I feel this is still a strong film and every time I watch it it grows on me a bit more I doube it will be top 10 ever but still.

    15. You Only Live Twice what should be top 10 is kind of ruined for me considering how you can tell Connery really doesnt care at all. great mystery and the supproting characters are brilliant too Grey as Henderson is brilliant Tanaka is memorable Osato is menacing Blofield is great. the whole film comes off quite well but Connery here is just a wet blanket

    16. The Man with the golden gun: If ti wasn't for Scaramanga the Car chase and how hot Brit Ekland is plus a kick ass theme from lulu and Moore being really good this film would of been far lower the issue here is the producers just were nervous I guess about Bond versus Scarmanga without some world crisis in the background I just don't understand why to me Bond vs Scaramanga is far more interesting and engaging then the Solex agitator and M being all angry. But Lee Moore and Ekland more then make up for it

    17. Thunderball ok after a recent reviewing the problems of this film became fare more well apparent i don't mind the underwater stuff at all but the fight on the disco volante is poorly edited (again Quantum get's all the blame for crap editing have people seen thunderball recently was the editor Drunk or something) the stuff at shurblads is good but I would of preffered us knowing less and Bond finding out more. I think the women in this film are all extremly sexy Largo is fun but I would preffer Blofield Renard Le Chiffe etc. Vargas comes off as an Oddjob rip off and again there are some great moments in this film but overall the editing and pacing just come off as weak.

    18. Goldfinger: Bond does nothing in the second half and this is it's downfall. I love Auric Goldfinger and Oddjob plenty and even Pussy Galore is amazing and sexy and fun same with Jill Masterson and the PTS it's just. Leiter is an idiot Bond gets kidnaped a dozen times and is kind of dumb as well it's better then the book however I hated the book as well.... Overall Godlfinger is a couple of very classic scenes that in their own right are amazing but that's it what is tying those classic scenes are mesh of bad ideas half hearted heros and just weakness all around. Shame as I really like Goldfinger Pussy and Oddjob I wonder how I would rewrite the film to make it better but I dunno.

    19. Die Another Day Everything up untill that stupid Wave surf thing and of course the finale are quite good. it's just that the bad moments of this script and clunky dialogue ruin the cool moments like sword fight or the Car Chase or the PTS or Bond in Hong Kong and Cuba again some great moments I view this (I assume) the way most view Quantum in that with a better Director and a stronger script (not to metion a betyter title) Die another Day could of been a really good harsh gritty bond film. oh well

    20. A view to a Kill This really should be higher on the list. I love Zorin I love the german scientist whose name escapes me I even love stacey sutton but Moore.. Pooor Roger Moore why couldn't A View to a Kill have been Dalton's first filmthat alone would of elevated it to 13 take out the stupid beach boys stuff and it could even be top 10. Again Moore is the weak link here I mean he tries his best but he just too old and I hate to be an agist cause I am not heck I am super happy that and here is a spoiler for Spectre
    Bond is going to sleep with Monice Bellucci in Spectre because she is hot as hell and she is 50 which is amazing
    but Here Moore just is too old the stunt men too obvious it just doesn't work.

    21. Diamonds Are Forever: Connery is still out of place and Jill is still annoying but over all what saves this film is Wint and Kidd. In fact much like Odd Job in Goldfinger i feel badd such great henchmen are in such a god awful film. When Activision began their Reimaging series for Bond films with craig I secretly hoped they would redue Diamonds are forever because god this film is bad (shame as the Novel is actually my favorite Fleming Novel...sorry) but this film is bad. Bloefield is Bad Connery is Bad I even find Tiffany Case annoying but Witn and Kidd are hilarious meancing Creepy and amazing

    22. Moonraker (the action peices are nice but over all this is really weak save for Drax and the mi6 regulars everyone else is bland. I can think of a few good lines (the did I really miss line for example) and the Boat Chase and glasswork fights were amazing but everything else... evben Drax I find to be ok not great not amazing justok better then Stromberg I guess but.. yeah I kind of wish Wilson and Mailbum started a film earlier instead of Christopher "I will steal from other films" wood doing another movie. I don't mind Bond in space and honestly I think Wilson and Mailbum could of written it better and more convicning it's just that it is such a retread of TSWLM Heck Goodhead is a carbon copy of XXX (seriously why does she not trust bond America and England are on the same side I thought?) like i said the whole film comes off as TSWLM part 2 and this is why it's at the bottom of my list.

    I will put Goldeneye here whenever i get a working copy and finish it I then plan starting in april going through the sdewries chronologically instead of haphazard. nad possibly biting the bond bullit and watching the god awful Casino Royale 67 and review that along with CR54 (which I actually like) and Never give Sean Connery a million dollers again i mean Never say never again.

    @fromswedenwithlove I don't think you read the piece about MOONRAKER thoroughly. The point wasn't so much my, or @chrisisall 's age, so much as the experience of getting MR in the theatre with no indication that the franchise would ever get back on track (become less silly), that this was all we had and every reason to assume they'd get dopier..
    Thanks @Birdleson, you nailed it there.

    I just did a Moore marathon for the holidays (on a portable player to fill in the strange moments at my in-laws), and I have to say all my Moore film ratings have changed a bit.
    #1 LALD- Kananga's popping notwithstanding, I found myself enjoying this IMMENSELY!
    #2 TSWLM- Again, I was surprised at how much fun this was.
    #3 OP- The silly bits annoyed, but in the end it was grand.
    #4 TMWTGG- Wow this moved down my list some. Love Rog in it, but I just got a vacuous vibe despite the cool Barry score.
    #5 FYEO- This time out the Conti score, the dull villain, the hockey nonsense, and the stupid fake underwater shots annoyed me to NO end.
    (I don't own MR or AVTAK)
  • Had a mini Bondathon today, I watched A View to a Kill, Die another Day and On Her Majesty's Secret Service. Enjoyed watching each film for different reasons, occurred to me why I still struggle with Skyfall admittedly its a well shot film though I simply don't enjoy watching it.
