Appreciation of new MI6

I feel this is necessary.

People are allowed to think whatever they want of this brand new community. However, I'm a bit saddened and frustrated by the fact that <i>so</i> many seem to be <i>so</i> negative about it. You don't have to love it, but there's no need to bash it in immature ways like some members have done. Be constructive.

You've been whining about an update for half a decade. And now when you get it, you want the old stuff? What's the deal with that... In my opinion, this new, fresh, clean take on a Bond community is very welcomed and exciting. I haven't been around much lately as I lost interest both in the old forums and Bond himself. Thanks only to this refreshing new site, that interest has partly returned.

If you for any reason think that I post this just because I happen to be a moderator, don't. I'm as surprised by all this as you are, I wasn't warned. I'm the same old member you are. 6 years. 5000+ posts. All gone, but am I sad? No, why should I? We are still the same members, we know who are oldies and what we think about eachother and we know eachother's personalities. We don't need high-digit post counts next to our usernames and a slow, old forum to be reminded.

And now a few words about the news. Some features like bookmarking, flagging, tagging are wonderful. Everything will be easier to monitor and overview. I've seen some of you say it looks like a facebook chat, but perhaps you should ask yourselves why it does. Is it the design itself, or is it maybe because you use it as such and just spam? Have you tried creating a "normal" thread with Bond-related discussion? I myself can see this layout and design working perfectly fine for the true purpose - to discuss James Bond. It seems to me that you haven't even given it a chance... There <i>are</i> many glitches, I agree on that (for instance we need a take-me-to-the-last-post function and page numbering on top), but if we all vent them in mannered ways in the proper threads, we can get all these things working more smoothly as well. Rome wasn't built over a night.

Finally, to those of you who agree with me and appreciate all the effort and work of the MI6 staff; I look forward to many good, friendly and fun discussions with you in this new Home of James Bond! :)

    It's clean, it's easier to use, and it gives everyone a reason to stop phoning it in. I'm really excited about all of the possibilities and this change makes me want to be a bigger part of the community. Praise.

    Also, @DiscoVolante, that is a fantastic photo.

    As an old skool, old fashioned , old timer of MI6 from it's black n blue colour scheme era and forum share with cbn, I've gotta say this is the first time it's taken a step backwards with it's major changes. Before this, changes were only ever made to embrace the community it attracted, even if that did result in lots of spam and fighting - that's part and parcel of a fan site. Now this "community" section just feels like the same sort of community afterthought that I could imagine IGN throwing together... 5 years ago. Glad I stopped posting regularly when I did, but I guess the userbase will confirm if it's a success or not. Whether or not that userbase retains the bulk of it's 'loyal' (I hate that word) users of old tho is something that should be interesting to watch.

    No I'm not in the wrong thread. I appreciate the effort that's gone in, but I don't agree. It doesn't piss me off at all. This thread wasn't titled "everyone who loves the new site, let's gather round and sing kumbaya"

    When I'm not on my iPhone (is a nice touch BTW) or at work, I may put SuperRog back, but he'll be as rarely seen in the future as he has the past 2 years still.

    I think this new MI6 has already proved it's a success.

    Look at it this way: People are extremely miffed for being forced to leave years of their net existance behind for good. I can understand that. In some cases it's closer to a whole decade and some of the higher profile members have built themselves a character on the old boards that's surely every bit as impressive and distinctive as the real persons. Throw in the tons of material that are lost with the old boards and the loss is surely devastating.

    Yet, it seems all the old hands are back, aren't they? Back and busy, judging by all the new discussions that are started.

    And a cross-check with the big rival of MI6 boards shows they have up to now not experienced a sudden surge of new members made up of the peeved KTBEU expats. I predict that if it didn't happen up to now it won't happen at all. The ties KTBEU grew over the years are stronger than the temporary alienation the new home brings with it.

    I'd like to believe that too, and do agree with the sentiment... but I think we ought to wait till its been a day or so before we get too excited. Not out of the woods yet, right?

    Go here and you'll see a list of all the threads you'd ever participated in at the old MI6. Not sure how long that forum will be readable, though.

    I have to say Im mixed about the new forums. I like the way you can have your own user pic (finally) but I also find the whole thing a bit strange. I guess Ive gotten too used to the old forums. No doubt time will be a healer. Good job to those who put in th effort to do the revamp!

    @thegiantcookie I'm getting more and more comfortable with it as the day goes on. It's very “Twittery” and “Facebook-y” so no doubt that will scare some of the old codgers away, but I think it's a nice, modern & relevant improvement. Some quirks need ironing out but overall I am very impressed.

    Though there are certainly features I miss, and it does seem a bit blog-ish to me thus far (I'm sounding a bit negative aren't I?) there are some things about this that I really like. The avatar feature is one of them, but I think the fact that our own posts and topics are highlighted in blue is really cool... makes it easy to see where you've posted so far!

    I think we'll live. ;-)

    I haven't tried it on a computer yet, but on a handheld device, it is a hell of a lot easier to navigate and browse through. Also, I've been on forums where they've updated the look of the website and people have complained not because it's bad, just because it's different and not what they're used to.

    Give it a month or two and much of the negativity will be gone.

    So I guess this is why @Luds didn't post up a new elimination game after the last one (Most Realistic Bond Film) completed.

    I'd love to get a new one started ASAP—might help to lift peoples’ spirits.

    That's an important consideration as well. I never browse on my phone so it's not something I am familiar with, but it seems everyone I know does... that being the case, if the new format allows that I think it's a worthwhile concession. Aesthetics only go so far anyway.

    Well, I can't say that I immediately like it, but I'm sure its something that I'll get used to, and the fact that there are many new features is welcome. Furthermore, the creation of the entirely new forums means that there are perhaps more "dedicated" members, rather than thousands just clogging up the member lists.

    I'm sure that before too long, it'll feel like home again. Anyway, cheers MI6. :)

    yea i am not biggest fan of this new forum too but we should apreciate the work.And just remembered something,to be 00 agent you need 1000 posts and 1 year at MI6 forums.so it should be 1 year from now?

    @dragonsky Ranks such as 00 agent arent implemented at this time. Don't know if they will be.

    I say, it was time for a change. The new layout is a bit confusing, but I'm sure I'll get use to it, with time.

    Glad to see so many familiar faces made it through the push! Aside from the problem of lost content, I'm finding MI6 2.0 is perfectly easy to use.

    I don't think this will capture the appeal of the old MI6 but over time it could be improved.

    I'm sad to see some old faces leave but I hope they give this a chance of for a couple of days and then leave if they aren't comfortable rather make a hasty decision.

    I'm gutted I can't use my full username here (it's too long) and it's a shame that the overhaul has come so suddenly (after years of "something big is coming...") but I'm willing to give it a go. Even if I've had to re-register and create a pretentious-sounding username. ;-)
