TMWTGG has slipped a LOT in my ranking. It probably won't hit the bottom four, but I used to enjoy it a lot more. TND and OP for me are both hit-and-miss Bond films that have some things that I really like.

I guess. For some reason it doesn't entertain me as well as it used to. Scaramanga, thanks to Christopher Lee, is undeniably one of the series' greatest villains though. He still makes it worth it for sure. I still don't dislike it, I just get bored at a couple points in the film.

    But you dislike SPECTRE.
Illogical. Your issues with SP must be intensely personal and/or specific seeing as you hold SF in such high esteem. I've never had a problem with Mendes as a director even though I disliked SF (before SP made it more palatable for me). The STORY is key, and SF's is rather lame IMO. SP's is rather lame as well, but it delivers in the sheer cool department.

I can see why others may not take to TMWTGG. However, for me, its the quirkiness, charisma of all the actors, exotic far eastern locales & score that keep me coming back, along with Roger Moore arguably at his best.

I just think it's a very colourful & charismatic Bond film.

That's quite a good list. The only obvious problem with it is Specter at 22nd, much too low in my opinion. [/quote]

I don't know. I hope the film will grow on me but honestly, it was a big disappointment for me. I think the actors are all good but the plot was really weak. I mean I never saw a worse villain's motivation in a Bond film. Reducing all his evil activities to some daddy issues is such a shame for such a criminal mastermind. I also disliked that it was way too easy for Bond to escape the crater and shoot the helicoter down. In older Bond films, Bond needed some allies or he had to be creative, in Spectre he is more like the terminator r superman. How does that fit to the more human and vulnerable character of Daniel Craig's Bond? The Third Act was very rushed. Blofeld was supposed to be dead and his lair was destroyed. Out of the sudden he reappears and even had the time to decorate the old MI6 building with funny pictures. When should he have done that? When should he have planned that? How much time has been passed in the meantime? 2 years? In the end there are too many actions that take place at the same time. Everything is too quick. I mean until the ending, the pacing of the film is really slow. But finally whe have like half of the plot in the last 20 minutes. It really feels rushed.

@IncompetentHenchman Wow we share 9 of the top 10. I have tomorrow in there, and GF is about where you have TND
  • @w2bond Hey, that is cool! I guess that must mean we have similar personalities? Maybe?
And TND isn't that bad, in fact it's a solid adventure... Only it's a little... I don't know... unoriginal? Still lots of fun!

@w2bond TND is definitely run of the mill but it's Arnold's Bond theme throughout and Brosnan's performance especially in the first half that do it for me. Sadly two elements missing from the films since
  • Yes TND is one of Arnold's better scores, but I don't think he was necessarily very creative.
You are certainly right and I think that Brosnan never had a performance better than TND. In TWINE, his acting... well I suppose you could say that it felt very "ALIIIIIIIIIIIVE".

True but at least he puts the theme in appropriate places and integrates the score (in the case of TND, Surrender which is a far superior song)

I think it's a close call between GE and TND. In GE he is directed better, whereas in TND he is more naturally cool

We are quite fortunate to have such an incredible back catalog. Your view of SP is akin to my view of TWINE. The only film I just can't stand. All the others I can find at least something worthwhile in.

That's how I feel about MR. I guess we all have one that just ticks us off for whatever reason.

True, and that's what I meant about being lucky to have such a varied back catalog. We're spoiled for choice like no other franchise, so there's always something to watch. In fact, I think I'm going to pop in LTK right now.
MR is that pesky bottom one for me. It's basically what SP is for Birdleson; a couple moments I kind of like, but overall just the definite bottom.
  • edited February 2016 Posts: 1,595
I've come to appreciate it a lot in the last two years, but my tastes have changed somewhat as I've gotten older.

When I was a kid I ranked MR very, very low.
  • Honestly, I get the feeling that when people give the Moore era a negative rap, they point fingers at individual moments rather than assessing the film as a whole. Some people will refuse to watch OP just because of the Tarzan yell and the clown get-up, and for that reason it is clearly the most underappreciated movie in the entire canon, IMO.
    ...
    ...
    ...
That said, MR is still one of the worst Bond pictures... Although, Moore's worst is TMWTGG because as a joint whole the film is just very lazy and tired...

@Birdleson I am very close to putting Mendes's two films below QoS which is the current wooden spooner...

Arnold's score makes QoS more relaxing, but Newman's score makes a frustrating two movies even more so.

And at least QoS is over quicker :-bd

So, since 1997 you've only really enjoyed one Bond film?

@Birdleson Hmm it would appear that way....but like most on here it's more a case of "which film I like more" rather than "which film I hate". The bottom 3 are hard to sit through despite being the most well made and casted of the franchise. I have no problem watching individual scenes from them, just not the movie as a whole. The character interactions and dialogue in SF/SP are excellent.

Finalized ranking following 10 viewings of Spectre:

    1. Skyfall (a constant euphoria every rewatch)
    2. Casino Royale (A perfect film)
    3. Goldeneye (one of my first)
    4. Goldfinger (Incredibly fun, quintessential Bond)
    5. Spectre (a fantastic film, if a little flawed. This is where I expect it to stay)
    6. From Russia With Love (best of the Connery era, if a little less fun to watch compared to GF
    7. The Spy Who Loved Me (one of my first Moore films, and probably the best)
    8. On Her Majesty's Secret Service (criminally underrated outside the fandom, made Bond who he is)
    9. The Living Daylights (aside from slightly lacklustre villains, it's Dalton at his best)
    10. Quantum of Solace (moving its way up my rankings, some excellent moments and concepts)
    11. Live and Let Die (flawed, silly, but a classic joyride the entire way through)
    12. The World is Not Enough (again flawed, but many interesting concepts and stellar performances (minus Richards))
    13. Dr. No (nothing wrong with it, just a great film)
    14. Thunderball (a tad slow. Not Excellent, but very good)
    15. Moonraker (an immensely camp, immensely entertaining film that doesn't live up to its potential. Not to mention a BRILLIANT score from Barry at his best)
    16. Octopussy (underrated, moving its way up)
    17. Tomorrow Never Dies (way too low here, high rewatch value, equipped with an unfortunate soap opera love triangle)
    18. License to Kill (I don't mind the darkness, it's the execution here that hits me the wrong way. But not bad.)
    19. You Only Live Twice (It's ok. Connery didn't want to be there)
    20. A View to a Kill (I used to love it. Some nice moments with Moore and Macnee, Walken is great, but not much else)
    21. Die Another Day (a lot to love, a lot to hate)
    22. For Your Eyes Only (a lot to hate. The rest is OK)
    23. The Man With the Golden Gun (the only thing keeping it from being last is Christopher Lee)
    24. Diamonds are Forever (Shirley Bassey's theme song is the only thing that makes me regret this decision)

    After seeing them all again:

    1. Casino Royale
    2. Quantum of Solace (Underrated and definitely misunderstood by most fans.)
    3. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    4. Skyfall
    5. Goldeneye
    6. From Russia with Love
    7. Thunderball (Wasn't always a perfect film but I prefer it over GF due to Connery's attitude.)
    8. Goldfinger
    9. The Spy Who Loved Me
    10. Spectre (Not as low as I expected, but a good location.)
    11. Tomorrow Never Dies
    12. Die Another Day (I have a soft spot for this film)
    13. Licence to Kill
    14. The Living Daylights
    15. The World is Not Enough
    16. Octopussy
    17. Moonraker
    18. For Your Eyes Only
    19. A View to a Kill (I chose to put this over DN simply due to the fact that it's much more a fun, complete film.)
    20. Dr. No (A good movie but I really don't have any desire to watch it other than for Connery.)
    21. You Only Live Twice
    22. Live and Let Die
    23. The Man with the Golden Gun
    24. Diamonds are Forever
