I saw SPECTRE again this morning. I don't plan on revisiting these films for a few years, I need to look at them with a fresh eye, so this ranking will stand until then.

No joke here, I dislike SP that much. It's sloppy, tedious and damned poorly made. It's really taken a toll on my joy and enthusiasm for the world of Bond.

Elaborate please. You know what Bond films are about no?

Don't pick on Birdleson. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions.
  • Reposting this as I've seen Spectre a second time. Will post my list once more a few months down the road when I've revisited a few others again. Couple changes made from my gut:

    1. THUNDERBALL
    2. GOLDFINGER
    3. DR. NO
    4. FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
    5. GOLDENEYE
    6. CASINO ROYALE
    7. THE SPY WHO LOVED ME
    8. OCTOPUSSY
    9. THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS
    10. MOONRAKER
    11. LIVE AND LET DIE
    12. SKYFALL
    13. DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER
    14. A VIEW TO A KILL
    15. YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE
    16. TOMORROW NEVER DIES
    17. FOR YOUR EYES ONLY
    18. LICENCE TO KILL
    19. SPECTRE *
    20. ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE
    21. DIE ANOTHER DAY
    22. THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN
    23. QUANTUM OF SOLACE
    24. THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH
    25. NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN

    * There's a lot that I like, but after two viewings the flaws really start to show. The writing for this movie, which I maintain is of utmost importance for films like these, ranges from mediocre to downright terrible. I despise the Oberhauser "angle" that I won't spoil in this thread. I hate it more than almost anything in the series. So contrived it hurts, so very much the antithesis of everything Spectre is trying to be (a throwback, more aloof, traditional, etc.). It's just more of the same "digging into Bond's past" I'm sick of in the Craig era. On that note, Christoph Waltz commits the cardinal sin for a Bond villain -- he's boring. Didn't find him menacing or spooky or even over the top fun like some other Bond villains (Grey's Blofeld being one example).

Craig's performance is a mixed bag. Perhaps his weakest of the four (although I do think he's better at humor than he gives himself credit for). That said, about half of the humor worked for me, and when it didn't, it really didn't.

The last 20 minutes or so are awful, and anti-climactic.

Everything on the train, however, makes the film worth the price of admission. Love, love, love those 5-10 minutes. Like I said, there is a lot I like (The PTS, Lea Seydoux, SPECTRE meeting, Bautista, few other things I can't say because they are spoilers).

I am pretty much in line with you, except my "likes" are fewer.

I definitely didn't outright dislike it overall (I think I would enjoy it more once I have it on Blu-ray so I can stop it before the final act) but yeah, it seems like you and I had similar reactions.

Dialogue was often painfully bad (a shame, too, when you've got actors like Craig and Seydoux and Waltz delivering those lines). "Kite dancing in a hurricane," however, remains one of my favorite lines in the entire franchise.

Perhaps what disappoints me the most is that Spectre so badly wants to be the Bond film that I've been asking for since 2006 - which is throwing Daniel Craig in a Connery/Moore style Bond film and just seeing what happens. But something just doesn't feel right. Maybe it's the tone shifts. Maybe it's the fact that the film wants to have its cake and eat it too.

I think the producers feel that the audience needs some personal connection with Bond to whatever is going on to really invest which I think is bullshit. I find it almost more compelling if it's just a man, out on a mission, doing his job and that's it.

This is basically my gripe with it. And then they do those "this time's it's PERSONAL" bits as ham-handedly as possible. How many times do we need some of these angles?

That's what I wanted as well. All along. And I also, beyond my specific criticisms, just felt that the film was "off" somehow from the start.

Yes, it's definitely the tonal shifts. They are jarring (at least on first viewing).

I was trying to remember what it reminded me of, and it came to me today. Kingsman. It reminds me a lot of Kingsman, which also had strange shifts in tone which came out of nowhere.

It's predictable in places, and then throws you a curveball which you have to let sink in and process. How dare they?

That's why I think it needs a few viewings to let it all sink in. This one won't give you the full picture on first, or even second viewing imho.
  • @Birdleson I absolutely agree. I can't put my finger on it, which I know is a flimsy argument, but something just felt a little "off." I'd never put that in a review (in fact, I just wrote one), but I feel it. I blame the writing, which is quite poor.

I don't blame Craig. I liked his performance all in all, although I can see why some say he looks sick of the role (that said, it actually aided the performance in a way I think, as he seems extremely laid back and confident, which I like).

@Birdleson, I hope you don't let one bad experience ruin your enthusiasm of the DC era. I was disappointed as well but still hold out hope that he can deliver the goods one last time.

I still have great regard for his work in the first three, but this does tarnish the era. I do not want to see anymore from him or Mendes. I don't care for the knotted up state that they've gotten the franchise into. Every case we've seen Bond (Craig) involved in has its roots in an organization that is run by Bond's proxy brother who's motivating factor has been a deep-rooted anger and resentment at Bond for taking the affection of his father? So if Bond had never existed then MI6 really wouldn't have had much to worry about then. Stupid.

No more Mendes, no more links to the past, no more sidekicks. Six of the last nine Bond films (actually seven, retroactively due to the "revelations" in SPECTRE) have revolved around issues springing out of prior mistakes or tragedies involving Bond or M. Enough.

    Abso-bloody-lutely.

It's a shame, really, that SPECTRE was such a disappointment. I've never been Craig's biggest fan, but in recent Bondathons, I had really started to dig his take on Bond, with CR managing to break into the upper echelons of my ranking and SF even breaking into my top ten. And SPECTRE certainly taints those films somewhat now. I'll still enjoy both CR and SF, but they will never feel the same as the events of SPECTRE will now forever be ingrained in my mind. What a shame.
And what's worse, SPECTRE has even tainted the character of ESB, which is unforgivable. Reboot or not, such a drastic change to the character, and a shit one at that, has left me frustrated and perplexed that Babs and co. even went through with it.

I was looking up your ranking again. Sure one of the most interesting ones.
Also your input is always interesting to read :)

If I look at your ranking I can understand that you rank Spectre that low. It makes sense to me.
  • Yeah, I think Spectre taints a few things, as you've both mentioned, that I find frustrating. And I agree 100% with @Birdleson on both paragraphs

I didn't want o get into it too much. @Crazysoul95 , my opinion of QUANTUM OF SOLACE has definitely improved, but I never out and out disliked it, it's not comparable. I'm no newcomer to film, I've studied and taught about film and film history for many years. I'm not bragging, I just want it clear that I don't approach movies flippantly or lightly, based on prior expectations, homages or surface glitz. SPECTRE is a bad film, on many levels, from the jarring chunks of expository dialogue, to the paper thin narrative held together by awkward references to the past, stiff humor, to unnecessary and cliched twists. And I was bored. My problems with this movie will not disappear with time, though I may soften my stance. @bondjames , my expectations were not particularly high, I've been through the mill with this series since 1965 and am aware of potential disappointments (1979), but I did expect to enjoy it.

You are a kite, dancing in a hurricane Mr. @Birdleson

Looks like we may have to send Mr Hinx to have a word with this person! :)
