    I'm surprised as well, Goldeneye is on the brink of falling out of my top 5. Amazingly, it has managed to hold it up until Spectre. I still think it's great, but I get more of a box check vibe from it as time goes on.

    @Birdleson I know you're not a fan of GoldenEye; seems to be one of the only films we strongly disagree on. It only moved up one spot from #5, and that's because Skyfall didn't hold up quite as great as I was hoping for (sorry @Mansfield), even though I still love it. My Top 5 are pretty much in their own class; if I were to put them in tiers...

    Tier 1 (Incredible): #1-5
    Tier 2 (Great): #6-8
    Tier 3 (Very Good): #9-12
    Tier 4 (Good/Decent): #13-17
    Tier 5 (Mediocre): #18-19
    Tier 6 (Disappointing): #20-23

    It seems perfectly respectable to have Goldeneye ranked outside of the top 10. Honestly, anything between 5-15 seems pretty fair. I'm sure plenty of people have it ranked higher or lower than that, but I think that's teetering on the edge of overpraise or nit picking. Consider some of the efforts of less prestigious films, it is a reliable film overall. That's probably the one aspect that holds it in my top 5, along with my appreciation of Brosnan.

    Allowing a few placement changes, we mostly have the same perception of what the series' weakest titles are. I just didn't have any fun with Moonraker last time, so it earned last place; at least A View to a Kill has Christopher Walken and a good title song.

    Yes, A View To A Kill can never be last in my rankings on those basic factors alone. No worries about the Skyfall drop, it will be the last rat standing. I'm wondering what added context Spectre could provide to Skyfall to raise its stock.

    I would watch TWINE, TLD, DAF, TND, and OP out of that list without effort. I'm surprised you have The Man With The Golden Gun in your desirable half. That's probably the most glaring selection I can think of.

    The only other thing I have trouble relating to is ranking LTK over TLD. Though, this seems like a natural divide on this board. I see TLD as a vastly superior entry. Admittedly, I am a secret fan of it in no small part to the presence of Talisa Soto. Overall, I just think they do much of it poorly and over the top. I think Dalton had his living on the edge thing down in TLD, and what he brings in LTK is so personal in a mercenary kind of way without the emotional attachment to make it believable for me. It was the wrong film to explore Q's relationship with Bond since Dalton often treats Q like a nuisance instead of the true friend along the lines of Moore or Brosnan. Even Craig's treatment of Q is part respect mixed with his cynicism. /rant

    It's still up in the air, obviously, but I predict Spectre will end up sneaking into my Top 10 at #9 or so. For some reason I have this feeling that it's not going to be better than Skyfall.

    EDIT: What worries me most about Spectre potentially is it being too similar to OHMSS. OHMSS is one of my favorites, but do we really need the same thing again? It's just a potential concern. And also the possibility of it getting too melodramatic.

    I was looking at your wording. The highest ranked Bond films get the tag "Incredible". So isn't it fair that the lowest ranked Bond film gets the tag "Groce" or "Very Bad" or "Highly inferior" :-)? I would even add a 2nd grade to it. And always include a "center-grading" or "neutral-grading". Perhaps you can agree with this grading @FoxRox?:

    Tier 1, #01-03: (MASTERPIECE !!!)
    Tier 2, #04-06: (Good !!)
    Tier 3, #07-10: (Above average !)
    Tier 4, #11-13: (Average)
    Tier 5, #14-17: (Below average !)
    Tier 6, #18-20: (Bad !!)
    Tier 7, #21-23: (UTTERLY GROCE !!!)

    By doing so, you force yourself, and others, to make a better choice... With your grading all choices are more or less starting at "Mildly below average" and then instantly go to higher, more positive wordings.

    1. The Afghanistan scenes are tainted by poor set design and lighting. The jail scene is laughable. It looks like a Brady Bunch set. I'd say that TLD has one of the worst (if not the worst) production design in the series.

    2. That bar fight in LTK is pure camp. I love it. Remember, LTK came out only a month or so after Road House. I remember thinking "Road House" when that fight started. I love Bouvier's little "tsk tsk tsk" at the size of Bond's gun.

    Wow. Tough crowd. I love TLD especially after Bond and Kara get to Afghanistan. It's a complicated plot, even by Bond standards, so it took me a second to understand why the fight had to evolve in stages. First the deal between the Mujahadeen and the Soviets. Then Bond tries to destroy the heroin. Then the Soviets counterattack. Loved the breakout from jail beforehand as well.

    Must concede that the LTK bar fight was pure cheese. Dancer showed great discipline throughout. Bouvier was brutal throughout.

    TLD is still one of the most well rounded Bond films for me (and my current #1). It's mostly got all the elements we've come to expect and is quite gripping from beginning to end. I can understand the criticisms towards the final third, and especially the confrontation with Whittaker, but the final fight with Necros makes up for everything and is one of the best stunts in the series.

    The score is great but is definitely quite repetitive. However, I do love the integration of both the theme song instrumentals. I'll have to say as a whole I prefer Octopussy's more varied sounds (palace fight, chase bomb, etc). As for his other tracks, they're all special and unique, yes even golden gun.

    The recent criticisms of it I have read on it here may affect my opinion of it in the future but it's overall one of the films I most enjoy. Plus, if TLD is not number one, that position would go to....Octopussy....and I'm not prepared to do that just yet

    No. The whole glorification of the Mujahideen does seem silly and naive at this point, but I can overlook that. I mainly find those segments boring, flat and interminable.

    And, again I realize I may be alone on this, TLD contains the only Barry score that I dislike. To me it comes off as tinny. That repeated motif is cloying.
