HA! I knew I wasn't dreaming that DAD doesn't finish last in EVERY list.
    (had to say this sorry)

This ranking looks very reasonable with no real surprises.
The bottom five of the EON movies are: DAF, AVTAK, DAD, TMWTGG, QOS which resembles the public opinion accurately imho.

The Top 10 also looks astonishingly realistic. I go so far and say, those are exactly the 10 movies that are the 10 most loved by the general public.
Quite surprised at those IMDB ratings. Obviously a lot of people there can be objective.

Secretly, I'm just very happy that Brosnan's 2nd best Bond outing in this ranking -still- is "TWINE". In all honesty, from all of Brosnan's Bond outings, that's my favourite. Michael Apted also gave us a quick future insight in how the Craig films eventually would turn out.

And it DOES seem to turn into a very close and exciting race between "FRWL" and "CR". "SF" is rock-solid on 6th place.

Today British newspaper "The Telegraph" launched their biggest James Bond Poll ever: You can find the poll, simply titled "Which Is The Best Ever Bond film" here: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/film/james-bond-spectre/rank-films-best-worst-poll/. Already a whopping 900 people have voted in the poll. Remember, these are not necessarily Bond fans, but ordinary readers!

These are the current standings, with preceded by the mean differences I calculated:
    01. +537: "GOLDFINGER"
    02. +497: "CASINO ROYALE"
    03. +467: "FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE"
    04. +325: "DOCTOR NO"
    05. +278: "SKYFALL"

    06. +260: "THE SPY WHO LOVED ME"
    07. +249: "YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE"
    08. +240: "LIVE AND LET DIE"
    09. +164: "THUNDERBALL"
    10. +151: "ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE"

    11. +141: "GOLDENEYE"
    12. +139: "THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN"
    13. +037: "THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS"
    14. +024: "DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER"
    15. +023: "FOR YOUR EYES ONLY"
    16. -018: "LICENCE TO KILL"
    17. -077: "TOMORROW NEVER DIES"
    18. -106: "MOONRAKER"
    19. -130: "QUANTUM OF SOLACE"
    20. -133: "A VIEW TO A KILL"
    21. -134: "OCTOPUSSY"
    22. -161: "THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH"
    23. -300: "DIE ANOTHER DAY"

So far, all of Connery's first five Bond films are in the TOP 10. Two of Craig's outings are firmly accompanying Connery in the TOP 5. Roger Moore has two outings in the TOP 10. And entering the TOP 10 is Lazenby's only outing as 007.

Timothy Dalton and Pierce Brosnan are screwed in this poll. No TOP 10 for these actors :-). Three of Brosnan's outings can be found in the BOTTOM 10. So sad....

These are the current standings, with preceded by the mean differences I calculated:
    01. +1473: "GOLDFINGER"
    02. +1464: "CASINO ROYALE"
    03. +1263: "FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE"
    04. +0908: "DOCTOR NO"
    05. +0800: "SKYFALL"

    06. +0715: "THE SPY WHO LOVED ME"
    07. +0667: "YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE"
    08. +0648: "LIVE AND LET DIE"
    09. +0575: "THUNDERBALL"
    10. +0527: "GOLDENEYE"

    11. +0469: "ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE"
    12. +0339: "THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN"
    13. +0184: "THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS"
    14. +0178: "FOR YOUR EYES ONLY"
    15. +0165: "DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER"
    16. +0018: "LICENCE TO KILL"
    17. -0104: "TOMORROW NEVER DIES"
    18. -0214: "MOONRAKER"
    19. -0257: "OCTOPUSSY"
    20. -0268: "A VIEW TO A KILL"
    21. -0301: "QUANTUM OF SOLACE"
    22. -0316: "THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH"
    23. -0798: "DIE ANOTHER DAY"

"Casino Royale" moved to 1st spot in the BIG TELEGRAPH POLL:

Well, that's not a real poll, you just can move up and down the movies which is kind of silly.

It's remarkable to see all of the different rankings. If nothing else, it shows how variable we are when it comes to opinions of preference.

I don't think it's a coincidence certain films gravitate towards the bottom of lists. When I saw Die Another Day for the first time, I did not understand what I was watching. It required a second view to make any sense out of it. It's the only film in the series where I had that high of a degree of confusion. It's easy to miss small details here and there, but on the whole level, Die Another Day stands alone there.

    @BondJasonBond006

As a "defender" of Die Another Day, you have said it's good OTT entertainment. In that regard, it's a formidable picture. Perhaps it was a fitting conclusion to the Brosnan era, at least it probably is for many people. It wasn't a good conclusion to me. That's part of the reason why I was one of the "blonde Bond" crew when Craig was announced. The thought of Brosnan getting the boot without making one more serious Bond was very disappointing to me. I really like what Brosnan brought to the table and think he deserved a more traditional outing, kind of like what he got in Goldeneye, but with the nuances he developed in the character of his last three films.

DAD had those but also had Brosnan's best performance; OTT fun, what was held as a great car chase, and the sword fight.

Praisers of LTK and TLD are blinded by the equally bad special effects (waving dummies plummeting to their death, fake sharks, fake exploding heads, bad acting in spades, dorky villains, an Italian guy trying to be Hispanic ...shall I go on?)

These are my final pre-Spectre rankings. Originally I was going to withhold an update, but I didn't want to have any changes appear to be caused from a different perspective in the wake of Spectre. When I see it in theaters it will be placed in these rankings without any other changes.

    1. Casino Royale
    2. Skyfall
    3. From Russia With Love
    4. Goldfinger
    5. Goldeneye
    6. Dr. No
    7. For Your Eyes Only ↑6
    8. The Living Daylights ↓1
    9. Tomorrow Never Dies ↓1
    10. On Her Majesty's Secret Service ↓1
    11. Quantum Of Solace ↓1
    12. Octopussy ↑2
    13. You Only Live Twice ↑5
    14. Thunderball ↑2
    15. The Spy Who Loved Me ↓4
    16. The World Is Not Enough ↓4
    17. Diamonds Are Forever ↓2
    18. Live And Let Die ↓1
    19. The Man With The Golden Gun
    20. Licence To Kill
    21. Die Another Day
    22. A View To A Kill
    23. Moonraker

    Top 3 Changes:

    Shaken:
↓4: The Spy Who Loved Me, The World Is Not Enough
    ↓2: Diamonds Are Forever

    Stirred:
    ↑6: For Your Eyes Only
    ↑5: You Only Live Twice
    ↑2: Thunderball

    Observations:
    • For the first time since seeing it in theaters, I strongly considered Skyfall for my #1 ranking. It still occasionally knocks on the door.
    • For Your Eyes Only took too much of a fall in my previous rankings and have adjusted it accordingly. This is one of a few titles I feel very hot and cold towards. I expect the volatility of its placement to continue.
    • This is the first time Quantum Of Solace is outside of my top 10. It hasn't particularly lost its luster, but it's so good in parts it leaves me feeling a bit empty the more I watch it.
    • You Only Live Twice got a massive boost. Perhaps I have Spectre on my mind, but I think it's because I've grown willing to overlook its flaws for the adventure that it is.
    • Unlike the drop of The Spy Who Loved Me and The World Is Not Enough, Diamonds Are Forever has plummeted in two consecutive rankings. The more times I watch it, the thrills feel cheaper than the substance of the other films.

    @Mansfield

That' a great top 10. 8 out of 10 are the same in mine (not the same order).

I like it that you are one of those (like me) who has all 6 actors in their Top 10.
Clearly every actor has at least done one movie that belongs to the best.
    Bravo =D>

I agree, there is something to like in every actor. The two I generally rank lower are Moore and Lazenby. Of those two, I can only be very critical of Lazenby (as I have specified in other discussions). Moore is a legend. I recently watched a few episodes of The Saint on television for the first time. He was so sly and confident without all of the superfluous eyebrow raising moments and I really wish that was represented in his films in a more prominent way. Having not experienced the 70s for myself, some of the character portrayal is foreign to me.

For actors like Moore and Brosnan, who play a more fictional representation of the character, are more reliant on the period of time when they acted the part. Since I grew up in the 90s, I like and appreciate Brosnan's version more. The most natural depictions of Bond are able to transcend the times they are made in my opinion. Connery and Craig will always be great because of the sense of palpable danger. This also applies to Dalton to a lesser extent because he only got 2 films.

But I am not arranging my list to achieve diversity, balance or symmetry. I'm listing the order in which I enjoy/like/admire each film.

Today I finished the big IMDB-TOP 10 Ranking Contest of Best Bond films. In case you're interested, here's my final post. You can also go to the forums via these links:
    http://www.imdb.com/board/bd0000075/thread/249486307
    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2379713/board/thread/249486198:
This is the final results topic after a whopping 89 IMDB-forummembers (!!) have voted in this "IMDB TOP 10 CONTEST of BEST BOND FILMS". Since June 15th I have been asking all IMDB-forummembers to post their TOP 10 rankings of best films with our beloved British MI6-spy, James Bond-007 (unofficial films "Casino Royale '67" and "Never Say Never Again" included). The poll was jointly held in the "SPECTRE"-forum and the "James Bond"-forum inside the IMDB-message board (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2379713/board/thread/245015308?p=1 & http://www.imdb.com/board/bd0000075/thread/245297664?p=1)

I collected all the results in an extensive Excel-grid, by adding up all your points (12 points to your Best Bond film, 10 points to your runner-up, 8 points to your bronze medalist, then 7 points, 6 points, 5, 4, 3, 2 points and 1 point for your 10th Best Bond film). So here we go.....

The final results of the IMDB TOP 10 CONTEST of BEST BOND FILMS are:
    [green]01. 576 POINTS: "CASINO ROYALE"
    02. 569 POINTS: "FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE"
    03. 482 POINTS: "GOLDFINGER"
    04. 480 POINTS: "ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE"
    05. 400 POINTS: "GOLDENEYE"[/green]
    06. 361 POINTS: "SKYFALL"
    07. 290 POINTS: "THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS"
    08. 280 POINTS: "THE SPY WHO LOVED ME"
    09. 277 POINTS: "DOCTOR NO"
    10. 259 POINTS: "THUNDERBALL"

    11. 185 POINTS: "LICENCE TO KILL"
    12. 181 POINTS: "FOR YOUR EYES ONLY"
    13. 112 POINTS: "YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE"
    14. 100 POINTS: "LIVE AND LET DIE"
    15. 099 POINTS: "THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH"
    16. 093 POINTS: "TOMORROW NEVER DIES"
    17. 085 POINTS: "OCTOPUSSY"
    18. 073 POINTS: "MOONRAKER"
    19. 056 POINTS: "DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER"
    20. 054 POINTS: "QUANTUM OF SOLACE"
    [red]21. 053 POINTS: "A VIEW TO A KILL"
    22. 045 POINTS: "THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN"
    23. 042 POINTS: "DIE ANOTHER DAY"
    24. 006 POINTS: "NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN"
    25. 002 POINTS: "CASINO ROYALE" (unofficial spoof)[/red]

It was a very very close race between "Casino Royale" and "From Russia With Love". Until voter no# 75 or so "From Russia With Love" was still leading, but the final 6 forummembers gave the decisive votes. It was also a close fight for 3rd place between "Goldfinger" and "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", for 8th place between "The Spy Who Loved Me", "Doctor No" and "Thunderball" and 11th place between "Licence To Kill" and "For Your Eyes Only"

Down below you can read and analize the entire breakdown from the Excel screenshots I made. If you like, you can check your own results in it. Just to make sure I did not make any mistake:
Final Results, IMDB TOP 10 CONTEST -- Best Bond Film, Part 1:

Final Results, IMDB TOP 10 CONTEST -- Best Bond Film, Part 2:
    Final_Results_IMDB_TOP_10_CONTEST_Best_Bond.jpg

Below Excel-grids are Color Graphs I made. The more 'green' a Bond film is, the higher it scored and the higher it got ranked:

But most importantly, let the discussion start! Let me know what you think of the results. Are you happy? Disappointed? Perhaps the results from "The Daily Telegraph" poll put things into perspective?

Excellent work @Gustav_Graves , this will take some time to pick through.

It was a lot of work really :-). But it's nice to see that there are also a lot of positive-spirited IMDB-forummembers (not trolls) who really like the Bond films. And some of them actually went on to get a profile on here, on MI6community.

The poll took me 4 months in total. But if you manage to get 89 IMDB-nerds voting in this poll....then I consider it a mild success ;-). In all honesty? I'm so happy "TWINE" gets a lot more respect on that board. But there was a huge fight going on between "CR" and "FRWL" for the victorious no# spot. I was also surprised that "SF" was rated so high on IMDB. A beautiful 6th place. And lovely to see some real credit for "FYEO" and "LTK", who were really fighting for 11th place.

I like to think of peoples rankings like there political identity. For instance, if you like GF, TSWLM, GE etc. You are more conservative in your fandom, because you like Bond the stick to the formula. If you like CR, OHMSS, LTK, then you are you're liberal in your fandom because you want experimentation outside of the formula.
And if you have a mixture in you're top ten then you are centrist. Anyway, it's fun to see which type of fan you're are.

I'm thinking of having a play-off between my fifth and sixth favourite Bond film one evening to decide if l'm really set in my ways when it comes to my top five.

Has anyone else done a 'play-off' between two Bond films?
