After a fifth viewing of NTTD: first time I really liked it with major reservations, then not so much, then I liked it again, then not so much, fifth time I came up with this (spoiler explains below)....

    1. GOLDFINGER
    2. FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
    3. ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE
    4. CASINO ROYALE
    5. DR. NO
    6. LIVE AND LET DIE
    7. THE SPY WHO LOVED ME
    8. THUNDERBALL
    9. QUANTUM OF SOLACE
    10. GOLDENEYE
    11. SKYFALL
    12. YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE
    13. FOR YOUR EYES ONLY
    14. LICENCE TO KILL
    15. THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN
    16. NO TIME TO DIE
    17. DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER
    18. THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS
    19. OCTOPUSSY
    20. TOMORROW NEVER DIES
    21. A VIEW TO A KILL
    22. DIE ANOTHER DAY
    23. MOONRAKER
    24. THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH
    25. SPECTRE

Without "that" ending NTTD would probably sit comfortably in my Top 12, in a tussle with YOLT, GE and SF for that coveted 10th spot (and I consider my Top 12 to essentially be my Top Ten, as it is so tight up there, so it would have expanded my Top 10 to encompass my Top 13), but, regardless, the damage is there. It substantially deflates the whole experience for me. Hell, take away the ending, and significantly pare down the soap opera and forced continuity (streamline the film in general), and this could have even cut deeper into my elite. But we have the product that we have, and going by my pure enjoyment of the films, or how they move me in some way, it is even tenuous where it rests now (I hold great affection for the three flawed, yet often great, 007 entires directly below it), but there is no denying how well it moves at times (almost as often as it feels bogged down by it's own pretentious weight) and how solidly it sometimes hits the mark.
  • I've sat on this for awhile, time to include NTTD:

A few shuffles… On a recent rewatch of Octopussy I thought to myself - “License to Kill” is way better than this”. In addition, I realized that TND is more enjoyable to me than any of the Moore films. Finally OHMSS jumps around my top 6-9 depending on how I’m feeling, but the rewatchability is struggling lately.

    1. Casino Royale
    2. From Russia With Love
    3. Skyfall
    4. The Living Daylights
    5. Dr. No
    6. No Time To Die
    7. Goldeneye
    8. Quantum of Solace
    9. On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
    10. Goldfinger
    11. Spectre
    12. Tomorrow Never Dies
    13. For Your Eyes Only
    14. The Spy Who Loved Me
    15. Thunderball
    16. License to Kill
    17. Octopussy
    18. Moonraker
    19. You Only Live Twice
    20. Live and Let Die
    21. Man With the Golden Gun
    22. The World Is Not Enough
    23. A View to a Kill
    24. Die Another Day

Having just seen this (it's not officially released here yet), here is my ranking of my unfinished Bondathon:

    1. The Living Daylights
    2. Goldeneye
    3. Casino Royale
    4. From Russia With Love
    5. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    6. Dr No
    7. Moonraker
    8. Goldfinger
    9. Licence to Kill
    10. Live and Let Die
    11. A View To A Kill
    12. Diamonds Are Forever
    13. No Time To Die
    14. You Only Live Twice
    15. The Man With The Golden Gun
    16. Die Another Day
    17. Thunderball
    18. The Spy Who Loved Me
    19. Skyfall
    20. The World Is Not Enough
    21. Quantum of Solace
    22. Spectre

FYEO and TND will probably slot below Dr No, and Octopussy in the top 7, leaving NTTD at 16

Took some time to figure this out post-NTTD, and curiously the last move was slotting AVTAK in my Top 10. Flaws and all, I can’t help but love it.

So, reverse order @Geno ? Nice list, numbering will help us out with the feedback? I don’t rank TMWTTG that high, but I do love it, and I often wish I put it that high.

Ah, yes - thanks @Birdleson , least favorite to favorite. Every now and then DAD managed to crawl out of the bottom rung for a brief instant. Usually around the holidays.

And always glad to see more support for TMWTGG. The quirky charm gets more endearing to me as the years go on and helps outweigh the wince-inducing moments.

Much like @NicNac I find it impossible to 'rank' them all, 1 to 25.
Simply because I only 'dislike' one or at the most 2 of them, and all the others are watchable- to very watchable depending on mood, time, what kind of Bond-flic you want to see, what kind of details you want to revisit / focus on...

    I find myself always ranking them within types ;

The serious 'old-school' Bonds - low on gags & gadgetry, clear attempt at 'realism' by director
    1. FRWL
    2. OHMSS
    3. LTK
    4. DN
    5. GE

The escapist 'old-school' Bonds - all of Moore's fall here within, because...it's Rog'
    1. TLD
    2. TB
    3. GF
    4. TSWLM
    5. FYEO
    6. YOLT
    7. OP
    8. TND
    9. MR
    10. LALD
    11. AVTAK
    12. DAF
    13. TMWTGG

The modern Bonds - to my mind, TWINE is where EoN stepped away from 007 as a mere protagonist in the plot and built in character-development that then became the modus-operandi in DC's era (LTK was a one-off, and still feels very bound to the previous era, for me). All irrespective of 'realism'...
    1. CR
    2. QoS
    3. SP
    4. SF
    5. TWINE
    6. DAD

I can't include NTTD yet, I cannot make up my mind between 2nd and 3rd spot.

Were I to include No Time To Die (I never do officially until it comes out on Blu-Ray so I can watch a film without the hype or fuzz of the cinema trip), I'd probably place between The Man With The Golden Gun and Skyfall, making it my 19th best. But that isn't officially and definitely need a rewatch to confirm!

In a previous life @AceHole I wrote an extensive review and love letter to Octopussy on a previous thread I can't find now. It is an amazing film. Truly one of the best. Very much enjoyable whilst evoking the tenseness of the Cold War. An outstanding movie from start to finish. I could watch it once a week and never get bored. If there is an Octopussy appreciation thread, I'd be sure to hunt it down and get involved.

As for my Top 5 being original, thank you! TSWLM being Number 1 is going to take some beating. My top 5 is definitely an excellent mix of what makes the Bond franchise classical I feel.

EDIT - I found my old review for it!

I can see NTTD potentially rising higher than this.
I’m seeing it again on the weekend.
Might even crack the top 10!
I will add, I like and enjoy all the Bond films. Some more than others. Obviously.

I think we are all on that page. Especially after a top 5, it gets tougher imo. 10-15, that’s probably my toughest to rate objectively. One of these days I’m going to sit down (when I have a lot of free time) and basically binge them, then rate them (while they are fresh). Dr. No is a film that could rise up the ladder for me. I have seen the Connery Bonds the least, except for Thinderball, which I really enjoy. Do you mind me asking why you like DAD over QOS? Just curious 🙂

Three watches in and NTTD has stayed consistent as a pretty beloved entry for me. I'm happy with the vast majority of it and hopeful it won't slide down too much (much harder to see it breaking into that Top 9 though, as I've adored those ones for so long now). New ranking using the fun abbreviations and a little bit of rearranging since the last:

This is my attempt at an "objective" ranking, based on how "well" each film was made, trying to look at the series as completely outside of myself as I possibly can, which is impossible to 100% achieve...but I'm trying to anyway, because I'm a madman :))

My one caveat is that I'm weighing story a lot less than any other element (acting, cinematography, direction, dialogue, second unit work, editing, etc.) because I feel like whether or not the story in a film works is maybe the most subjective thing, whereas it's a lot easier to point out whether a performance or a bit of editing is "good" or "bad".
