The Northman Phenomenal. Best film in the genre since Conan the Barbarian

It's only taken me 12 years to finally get around to seeing this. I think Jackie Earle Haley did a good enough job as Freddy, and I wouldn't be against him making a sequel (if it had happened closer to the film, not 12 years later). I thought the makeup effects on Freddy were also good. But that's all the good I can say about this film. None of the characters that we were supposed to like, were likeable. Some of the CGI looked bad. And I don't know how I feel about the change of Freddy's crime. Did they really need to go there? He was already a monster just for being a mass murderer.

Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit (2014). A recent rewatch, the definition of chicken nuggets. Which means average that fills up the bare minimum of what you want. Action was done ok.

    A true classic.

    Patriot Games (1992).

Decent. Sean Bean was great in a early role.

Not a movie, but I caught Tosca at the Met tonight. Friend got surprise tickets, they upgraded us to the front row! Just incredible. Goosebumps. My favorite sequence in Quantum of Solace.

Having rewatched all the Tarantinos, here is an attempt at ranking them.

    The B list:

My Ranking would be similar though Django is my least favourite, out of all Tarantino's films I can't get into that one, I should probably give it another chance.

Tarantino outdoes himself. The level of work that went into this is incredible.

I agree with your opinions for the most part. IB is like another 2009 film: Avatar. A director getting lost in their ego and dragging things out too long. Christoph Waltz saves it. As for OUATIH being number one, to quote Vincent in PF: “That’s a bold statement.” Too be number one so soon after it’s release. I definitely recommend it’s novelization as well. It’s a lot different from the movie in a positive way. More details in the characters. I’m looking forward to QT’s new book Cinema Speculation coming out this week.

Last movie I watched is Clear and Present Danger (1994). Definitely one of the better Jack Ryan films. Willem Dafoe is the best part! I really want to read the books. Are any of the ones not made into movies good? Please let me know!

    The Thing (1982)
John Carpenters classic remake is 40 yrs old! Getting a reissue for the cinema today, but I watched my excellent bluray disc last night. Still a superb movie. Carpenter had excellent production values on this film, from production design, to cinematography ( Carpenter regular Dean Cundey!) to the Maestro Ennio Morricone, and top notch effects people like Albert Whitlock, Roy Arbogast, and Stan Winston is thanked in the titles. But this is Rob Bottins show, astonishing mechanical effects, which still aghast today, as they did when I first saw this in the cinema in 1982!
But its not just the effects, Carpenters direction is superb, really builds tension ( the blood testing scene is super tense!) And a top notch cast, lead by Kurt Russell! Really enjoyed watching this late last night! A flop on release, its now considered John Carpenters finest film, and I concur!

Isolation and paranoia has never been done so well, along with Alien the best film in the Genre. Did you ever watch the prequel to The Thing 2011i t is inferior though has some merit much better than I waa expecting.

I am also a fan of the James Arness (Gun smoke) The Thing From Another World 1951 I have many of the 50's sci fi films what a golden era that was in cinema.

Interesting to read your thoughts. I noticed a couple things during this Taranthon that I have missed before, or didn t connect. Such as the cigarette brand Red Apple appearing in several movies, and Madsen s character Mr Blonde in RD being named Vic Vega. He and Vincent Vega must have been brothers.

    THE FLY (1982)

Caught it at the Metrograph in Manhattan on Thursday night for my first time. While I suppose it's fairly easy to see coming early on, I was more surprised and invested in the abortion commentary in The Fly more than anything.

Vic and Vincent are brothers. QT has confirmed this. He was going to make a prequel with them doing a job together in Europe. He abandoned it, for a number of reasons, namely the actors getting too old for a prequel. I think he should write it as a novel, personally. It seems that writing books will be his main focus now.

Also, all of QT’s movies are in the same universe. There’s little details and name connections that you have to watch for. Red Apple Cigarettes is one of the most used, and noticeable.

One last thing about your list @Thunderfinger. I’m surprised how high you ranked The Hateful Eight (2015). Most people rank it as one of his worst. I place it as 5th or 6th. Daisy Domergue is one of my favorite female characters from QT. JJL nailed it.

An American Werewolf in London (1981)
Director John Landis wonderful comedy/horror, with simply awesome make up effects from Rick Baker! If I recall. Its because of Bakers groundbreaking work, that they introduced a new category in the Oscars, for special make up effects.
As for the film, Landis balances the humour well with the gory horror sequences. David Naughton is great as the hapless American tourist, who gets bitten by a wolf and dreads a full moon after it! He does have some luck, when he ends up falling for Jenny Agutters Nurse ( and who wouldn't?)
Great use of music too! Entertaining viewing for the night thats in it!

That final car chase sure is fantastic. You have to sit through a whole lot of the worst written and worst directed conversation scenes in Tarantino's career to get there, but that car chase and Kurt Russell's performance throughout almost make it worth it.

@Mathis, I see you're hitting up the golden era of practical effects-driven 80s horror cinema. Excellent selection you have going.

The greatness goes on. Looks and sounds fantastic. I have to smile whenever I see Van Cleef show up in this, as he will always be Elliot Belt for me. The first working title for the film was even The Bounty Hunter as well.

Cheers, mate. I plan to watch 'The Fly' remake next!

I am currently watching OUTLAND (1981), starring Sean Connery and directed by Peter Hyams. This is one of those films that didn't draw particularly high praise at the time of its release, but keeps getting better with age. This "HIGH NOON in space" film is loaded with beautiful futuristic shots, benefits from solid performances, and thrives on Goldsmith's fine score. Connery sure packs a lot of energy in this one, demonstrating once again how regrettable it is that he didn't continue to be Bond for EON until well into the mid '80s. OUTLAND is one of Hyams' better films IMO, and one that deserves some reappraisal from fans of westerns and sci-fi alike.

Great choice. Those three, The Thing, The Fly, and An American Werewolf in London, might be the trifecta of practical effects-driven 80s horror.

Love this prequel as well, but perhaps not quite as much as the Dollars films. I think my favourite may be FAFDM.

Halloween 2018 , 2/6.......zzzzzzz , yawn. Scary scenes are unscary , plot is bad , JLC and the ending in the house is the only thing good imo.

Ghostbusters 2016 aka Fembusters , 4/6.....this is actually decent , i thought it would be horrendous like MK2 or Police Academy 7

Kriminal 3/6 , stale italian movie based on comic strip. The main person is a bad guy/jewel thief so not a superhero in this one......it feels more like 007 than a super hero movie

Oh my lawd. So let me get this right, Seagals plan to go full Eco Warrior, was to BLOW UP the oil refinery? :)) I bet Warner Bros were regretting pushing for Seagal to make Under Siege 2 for this.

    John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum
@Creasy47, I am now up to date on John Wick. Damn, each one just gets better. It's nice to see Mark Dacascos onscreen in something big. Drive is one my favourite 90's action films. I'm hoping that this will be the role that Scott Adkins will play in the next film, the final boss of the film.

I'm glad you loved it! And yes, Dacascos is insanely underrated. My first experience with him was in that Jet Li film, Cradle 2 The Grave. I thought he played a very charismatic villain and I've always enjoyed watching his career since.

I believe Hiroyuki Sanada was originally going to play his role but he had surgery that caused Mark to get cast. I'm glad to see Sanada hired for Chapter 4 at least.

That's right, Mark Dacascos was in that too, wasn't he? I only really remember Jet Li dropping down from balcony to balcony at the hotel(?).
