Dark Star is a solid debut for a filmmaker who would soon step up his game with AOP13, Halloween, The Fog, EFNY and his masterpiece, The Thing, all in a span of just a few years. Carpenter was on FIRE, but many stupid critics were living under a rock, didn't understand Carpenter's films and consequently, he never got the career he deserved.

Let's not forget that Dark Star also allowed Dan O'Bannon to write Alien.

You really have to wonder what was going on with audiences in 1982 that neither The Thing nor Blade Runner did particularly well at the box office.

That, my friend, I have never understood. I get why E.T. walked away with all the love and praise, but SERIOUSLY... Blade Runner, The Thing, Tron, ... all underperformers at the time. What does that say about me, I wonder, since I was born in 1982. ;-)

That you were born 18 years too late to contribute to their box offices through multiple revisits to the cinema? :D

What a summer that would have been!

Summer of 1982. In the US add Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior. I saw the films mentioned multiple times, and it was a drive-in experience for first viewings of The Thing and Road Warrior. Unforgettable.

Other 1982 films I carry with me. The Verdict, understanding it doesn't follow court protocol. The Atomic Cafe. Conan the Barbarian. Creepshow. Eating Raoul. Inchon. Koyaanisqatsi. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. They Call Me Bruce?

And I saw many, many more that year plus caught up since. Witness what endures versus others dying on the vine. It warrants comparison to the pretty constant outcry against the latest Bond film, a critics' standard since the 60s. Versus the long view playing out in spite of box office, critics, and even folks familiar Bond. I'm thinking On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Quantum of Solace first off.

So possession in 9/10 of the law or at least that. We'll always have these films to relish.

Total Recall 4K Restoration a vast improvement on the Blu-ray which I felt looked a bit washed out colour wise. The 4K version really pops. One of my favorite Arnie films, so much fun with incredible pace and brilliant score from Goldsmith.

Rewatch after a long time. A strong turn from Depp as the kid in over his head. His scenes with Ray Liotta are very touching. Good film.

    Donnie Brasco
The second part of the Depp double bill is an immense gangster film, one of the best. The cast are uniformly great. Pacino especially is superb in an understated part.

    3 Days At Entebbe
Daniel Bruhl and the always great Rosamund Pike make a good acting duo in a film that isn't totally satisfying but is never dull.

    Bad Day For The Cut
Violent and darkly funny Irish thriller about a farmer who seeks to avenge the murder of his mother by a bunch of psychotic (but not especially competent) Belfast gangsters. Was very surprised at how much I enjoyed it.

    Broken Law
A bit biased by this one as it was made by close friends of mine but it was another enjoyable Irish thriller about two brothers on opposing sides of the law. Riffs on many Hollywood films from the same genre but does it in a knowing, self-aware way.

I can't wait for this to drop in 4K on December 8th, along with Collateral. Can't wait to see these upgrades from two of my favorites.

Oh thats a pity! 'The Thing' really astonished me when I saw it! Carpenters best, imo!
Mad Max 2 was amazing, and then later they re-released Max 1 and 2 as a double bill in cinemas!
Remember my sister came to town with me, as she was across the road in another cinema watching 'Gandhi'!! You couldn't get two more different types of film 🤣🤣

Collateral will look fantastic I have the Bluray and even in 1080p Mann's cinematography is excellent, great film.

I bought the 4K digital download of Total Recall though I have looked online at the collectors edition boxset, it looks impressive...

Last night: Bohemian Rhapsody. I'm not a Queen/Freddie Mercury fanboy, but do acknowledge what they were doing musically, and both me and my wife (who has really no connection to pop music of any kind whatsoever) enjoyed it.

Tonight (without my wife): Shock and Awe. Rob Reiner's take on how the deeply illegal, criminal attack on Iraq was initiated, seen from the position of the journalists of Knight Ridder. Brilliant for the kind of people who liked All the President's Men orThe Final Days or The Post.

Gave Under the Shadow another shot, figured it just didn't click for me several years back, but no: still awful. Takes way too long to get going for an 84 minute film and was painfully repetitious and boring throughout. Don't think there was ever any real sense of tension or terror going on, past a few predictable "it's just a dream" jumpscares.

Rather underrated Michael Mann thriller. Saw it a few years ago and thought it was just OK. On this watch I was more impressed. Good cast, with Wei Tang being very impressive.

A bit underwhelming for a Mann film, but still solid entertainment.

I've been meaning to get around to seeing this one again, I only saw it the once upon release. Pretty entertaining for the most part, though a bit flat at times and drags in some areas, with gorgeous cinematography, as expected from Mann's work, and a couple of good shootouts and fight scenes.

After having seen the original 1940 Hitchcock directed Rebecca last week, I decided to give the 2020 version a chance.

Now I don't mind remakes, not even if they change something here or there, but you've got to remain true to the spirit of the work that has inspired you. You should also remain tasteful in your recreation. This 2020 is neither and should be avoided at all costs.

Was disappointed with that film. And wasn't keen on the way it was shot. That style worked for 'Collateral' but not here, despite a few memorable images. Underwhelming indeed!

    "Last Christmas"

Pure cheese, clearly inspired by Curtiss but, IMHO, pulled off due to the two leads. I shouldn't like it but I do (if that makes sense?)

I must admit the first time I watched it I didn't give it the attention it needed.

This time I did and I liked it a lot more. Still disappointing coming from Mann. Better than Public Enemies though.

Oh without doubt. I was so looking forward to seeing 'Public Enemies'. It was one of my must see movies of that year. But what a letdown! Very poor for a Director of Manns calibre!
