I have to agree with many comments here. The individual elements may be in place but it just doesnt feel like a proper Bond film. It's what you get if you let an arty farty director do a Bond movie. That, however, is exactly what the current producers wanted i think. Brocolli and Wilson seem far more interested in impressing critics then they do their audiences. Well critics dont pay their wages we the fans do every time we pay our hard earned cash at the box office. Skyfall has had a great opening week but lets see how much that falls off in its second week. Most of the people i hard talking leaving the screening i attended werent overly impressed. Much to like in this film but also many things wrong with it. Hand on heart i hate the direction Brocolli and Wilson are taking with the series and i fear for the future of my beloved franchise. Casino Royale still rocks it for me. Martin Campbell just seems to get what makes Bond work. I would love to see the next one done by a proper action movie director who understands action as well as character not some over praised art house director

I totally disagree with your viewpoint. For me, Bond films should not be 'action' films - there are plenty of other films for that - they should escapist fantasies, where the the top alpha-male of the British state goes after the bad guys and wins, whilst enjoying himself and taking the audience with him. As for commercial success, this film is proving one of the most popular Bonds since the iconic Connery films of the '60s - and, let's face it, they can never be repeated. There will never be another Connery and the world has changed, just as there will never be another Beatles.

As i said, i totally disagree with your view, but that's what makes this Board fascinating - the kaleidoscope of views.

troy i have to disagree with your point I'm a massive fan of the old bond films but after die another day the films was starting to get stale and needed a fresh new start. But how do you do this with something like bond it as been running for so long.
They had to start over and Casino Royale was a grate start. And yes i feel we was let down with Qos. But skyfall was so different from anything that came before and for me sets it apart from the rest but still as the same bond this keeps it fresh and that is exactly what the bond films needed and they needed to stay fresh to keep with the times. And stay ahead of the others ie bourne, taken etc which skyfall doe's and for me it was brilliant. and Mendes should direct another so should Campbell

You realized the change in direction in CR. The reboot has taken us to SF and that;s what the producers and the Studio want. Your ugly remarks about Sam Mendez are a shame. Nobody could've added all the elements in a better way and give us a intelligent film. But I see that's your problem: if you have to see a film 2 or 3 times to understand it or make up your mind if you like it or not, than you missed the point. Personally I believe the franchise changed for ever by aiming at the Bourne series etc. In all of Craig's films the element of Bond is gone. Although they are good films they lost the inventiveness the humor the glamor in exchange for a physical cold assassin and maybe they will do good business, in all 3 films it is the end of 007. Now it just another action spy film. Even the girls are gone ex. QoS and SF (Severine is on screen for 15-20 min top) So it's not the director's fault as you claim but the whole franchise.

Looks like a majority of our members (over 50%) so far considers SF the best Bond of Craig's three.

At the moment I find CR to be slightly better. Have only seen Skyfall once though, yet.
And according to many people here it gets a lot better the at the 2nd viewing.
  • I have only seen it once so far (will be going again tomorrow once it opens proper). Right now I am going to say it is slightly below Casino Royale, but almost as good. Infinitely better than QoS. That might change, we'll see.

  • im bond lover from asia ...but skyfall make me very sad...the actions is really old fashion...not better from C.R and Q.S and why movie critics from here told mr mendez good direct for this bond movie? drama tone like the dark knight? which one...
Nolan idea in the dark knight action was more extream...if everyone say skyfall more dramatized in dark bond character ... why the action gonna be sacriface!!..in our country we have much bond big fans...and we have seen much the action movies but bond always favorite....part of them say istambul chase like jeremy renner motorcycle scene in bourn legacy...and liam nessson in taken 2 more hard...and fight scene in shanghai oww is under rated fight...scene in tube station?..ussual thing and final scene when silva and gangs attack...is boring.oh please i love bond....but after this????

Umuatbjocking. Any real movie fan knows that opinions about films can change on repeated viewings. Something you enjoyed at cinema then watching again on dvd you think what did i see in that. Or indeed something you hated at first but when watched again you appreciate it much more. On the subject of Bond in general though you and i seem to be in agreement. They are simplly films now not James Bond films. Yes i blame the producers. When the Bourne films came along and got great reviews and had the critics saying they were better than Bond the current producers didnt like that. But Bond has always survived all other newcomers just by being Bond. Die Hard, Leathal Weapon, Indiana Jones, Bourne. All dead and buried by their fourth film so why be scared of them. 23 and going strong, let Bond be BOND.

Skyfall is nowhere near Bourne. It has everything most other Bondmovies have, albeit updated or put in another place.

Besides, that latest Bournefilm flopped big time.

    1) SF
    2) CR
    3) QOS

It will probably stay this way.

  • Just got home after seeing Skyfall at IMAX Waterloo, London.

I saw my first Bond film, From From Russia With Love, in November 1963 but nearly 50 years on, I absolutely loved this movie. A strong plot, great performances, excellent use of locations, a fabulous score by Thomas Newman, the best since TLD all contributed to what is for me, one of the very best Bond films. Up there with FRWL, OHMSS, TBL, TLD.

It's easily Craig's best Bond movie.

After 50 years and 23 films it's a great achievment for Eon to still be making films of this quality.

Bring back Thomas Newman and Sam Mendes for Bond 24, please.

I thought Skyfall was great, especially the beginning! There were just two parts that I wish had been done differently:
I really wish that Severine and M had not been killed off, although I understand that Severine's death underscores Silva's twisted character. I love Dame Judi Dench as M and would have really loved to see her in that final scene with Bond and Mallory, finalizing her retirement from MI6. There could have been a touching moment between Bond and M if she gave him her porcelain(?) bulldog and said that she would always be looking out for him as always.

Other than those two things, I thought there was a tad bit too much gunfire and explosions, almost overused in a way. However, I might have been sensitive to this because I saw the film in IMAX and everything was REALLY loud! But other than those two parts, I thought the film was fantastic! Severine and Silva did a great job portraying their characters so compellingly.

    Does anyone agree? Haha :P

Edit: I just learned from previous posts that many of the parts that I described come from some of the Bond novels. I never knew that!

I enjoyed skyfall but it will take a few more viewings to fully appreciated it best parts were Shang Hai Marcau and the end in M's office... I would put even with casino royale and Quantum of Solace still better then the borsnan and moore era but there are few minor gripes.
  • There's so many memorable moments in Skyfall...Macau, Silva's Island, M in the courtroom, Skyfall Lodge... Beautifully done. I especially appreciate how all the sub-plots tie into each other so well AND how they've been able to really relate the story to where the on-screen James Bond character sits 50 years down the road. I'm sorry, but this film was so damn near perfect, I really don't know how anyone could ask for more. I know there's a lot that has changed since the earlier films and some people are upset with it, but these changes are keeping the series from being stale where I think it would otherwise be. CR did what GE back in the 90's, which deserves a LOT of credit, but this one...Skyfall...really perfects what they've been after ever since Daniel Craig has been on board.

The acting, the cinematography, the pacing, the plot, and the proper use of Bond references all put Skyfall at #1 of the past 3 Bond films. Unlike many other Bond films, this one can truly stand on it's own. It does (masterfully) use the series' past (ie the Aston Martin at the end) to work off of the nostalgia that's there, but everything else is so rock solid that if the character's name was anything other than James Bond, it would still be successful.

The parliamentary enquiry was one of my favourite bits. Especially as we know from recent years they can provide real drama.

I loved Helen McCorry snarky MP. Obviously this is a rare bit of power and she makes the most of it by carpeting M and going to far. Mallory has to pull her into line. She reminds me of Harriet Harman/person.

  • I saw it yesterday afternoon, and since then I've been debating whether or not it's better than Casino Royale.
It's difficult to decide, but I'm going to go with yes, Skyfall is the best out of Craig's three. I came to this decision because Bond was more "in character" in this one (which basically means "no sappy love story"). And even though it didn't follow the Bond formula completely, it still felt like a classic Bond movie.
