I wonder why nobody (neither critics nor fans) realize that the main story is actually a pastiche of the end of Fleming´s YOLT novel + a mixture of the novel TMWTGG and the movie TMWTGG!
Bond tries to kill M in the novel (after going through the obligatory tests while being "resurrected") and Severine is convinced that 007 will save her from Bardem´s campy Silva/Scaramanga (who´s gay in the novel) just like Maud Adams in the 1974 movie. Pity it just takes about 5 minutes, Ms Andreas needed a lot more...

We realized a long time ago (many, many months ago) that the story of Skyfall had influences from TMWTGG and YOLT novels, that doesn't make it a pastiche!

We all know you didn't like it but I am yet to talk to one person (personally) who didn't say it was brilliant! It's all a matter of taste but Skyfall so far has been a big hit with both critics and public.

Saw it yesterday evening for the first time in a sold-out cinema, which runs the film 8 times a day..
I think it's a fantastic film. The action is nerve wracking, Bardem's Silva is scaring as hell. First you think he's just insane, but then it turns out he's planned it all along. I think the level of humour is just right, and fits Craig perfectly. For me, it's got a TB vibe, and TB is still my all time fav. The way they brought back Moneypenny was fantastic. The old office, even the hat stand was there the padded door..

I just watched it, and I don't think I can place it above CR quite yet... though it has the potential to rise above it with further viewings and enough time to let it sink in.

    Currently:

    1. Casino Royale
    2. Skyfall
    3. Quantum of Solace

I'd rather these movies be excellent movies first with being good Bond movies second.

Bond movies are formulaic and creatively reigned in. The Brosnan movies were mostly great Bond movies but generally speaking as movies, they were mostly substandard and mediocre at best.

I have to agree with many comments here. The individual elements may be in place but it just doesnt feel like a proper Bond film. It's what you get if you let an arty farty director do a Bond movie. That, however, is exactly what the current producers wanted i think. Brocolli and Wilson seem far more interested in impressing critics then they do their audiences. Well critics dont pay their wages we the fans do every time we pay our hard earned cash at the box office. Skyfall has had a great opening week but lets see how much that falls off in its second week. Most of the people i hard talking leaving the screening i attended werent overly impressed. Much to like in this film but also many things wrong with it. Hand on heart i hate the direction Brocolli and Wilson are taking with the series and i fear for the future of my beloved franchise. Casino Royale still rocks it for me. Martin Campbell just seems to get what makes Bond work. I would love to see the next one done by a proper action movie director who understands action as well as character not some over praised art house director

The action in Skyfall is fantastic! I didn't miss a thing for the actionscenes. Most important, you can actually follow the action. This film is not just about the action... And that, in my opinion, is refreshing! Skyfall equals Casino and maybe even top it!

That means we now have 2 directors who can make a true Bond flick: Campbell and Mendes.

Certainly Craig's finest hour yet as Bond, but only by a small margin does it overshadow CR, like the scenes in Scotland with Judi Dench and Albert Finney and the sting in the tail - like the new office M gets at the end shades of Bernard Lee

    Top 20 Bond?

Possibly top 15, i'll need to see it again to be sure. But even a 2nd viewing is no guarantee. I had seen CR & QOS a handful of time each, before they slipped down my ranking.

I'll hope for best for you. Top 15 is better than nothing. As you know, the last two didn't set my world on fire but I'd like think Skyfall is top 10 material. It really was good, I found. I loved it.

I say possibly because I have not yet made a new post-SF ranking. It wouldn't make my top tier which currently consists of TLD, LTK, FRWL, OHMSS, DN, FYEO, YOLT & TND.

I haven't ranked it either, far too early. I'm sure I'll get round to it some time next year.

I will rank it as soon as I have digested the movie, but it is easily Craigs best movie so far.

I think it is difficult to compare the movie with the old ones. I think every era Bondactor and movies have it's charmes and qualities. But I must say the Craig era is way better than the three movies after GoldenEye. I think if the makers made a more serious Bond with Brosnan, like GoldenEye and the spyfilm The Fourth Protocol.... It would've suited Brosnan better.

Personally, the Craig era is a brilliant era. Back to the early thrillers and the Dalton Bond extended.

Well QoB imho does pull the average downwards pretty severly.

To a degree yes, cause of the writers strike and shaky action cameras, but for the rest it is visually a stunning movie, incl Craig's take on Bond.

It does have its moments but not enough to disguise a poor effort that is more a Bourne movie than a Bondmovie. And then I rate the Bourne movies higher than this movie. QoB is neither here or there imho

Second viewing of Skyfall the weekend and have to say improves massively on repeated viewing. Went with my stepson who was seeing it for the first time and he was distinctly underwelmed with it, so i guess it's a movie you have to see twice to get it. The good: Craig. Bardem, Fiennes, good clear action (wobble cam and flash cut editing gone thank god) and a good sense of humour. The bad: weak story for the villian, Severine great but wasted, average score more Bourne than Bond.
  • I've also ranked it 5th

    1) LTK
    2) TLD
    3) GE
    4) TSWLM
    5) SF
  • Great minds ^ ;)
