I'd like to see Indy ride again someday because I love the character, but I also kind of worry that there's nothing really to the character unless you have Spielberg/Lucas/Ford (and Williams I guess) doing it- the point of him pretty much was those three doing an old cliche hero character but in their style. Without them is it just another cliche character, or potentially worse: someone new just aping their style?
It would need it's own signature, but things have been reinvented before with a new identity, such as Batman.
Chris Pine doing a Shatner impression sort of worked, but you need someone like Pine.
It would have made most sense for Mudd to return. They could have recast him (so people
Exactly. They tried to resurrect a young Han; many fans rejected the attempt. It can be done, probably, but do we really need it? We have five Indy films. I love the character and the series, but I'm not dying for more content. Raiders and Temple of Doom provide me with all the fun I need. I'm open to new adventures with different characters in new film series. Indy deserves his rest.
I'd assume that a theoretical Glen Powell Indy film would be starting a fresh continuity from scratch.
Then the other elephant in the room is the villains of the piece. For Indy that was the Nazis and then Russians. Who would be the enemies of a 1980's circa treasure hunter? I suppose with the cold war still ongoing at that time the Russians could return.
I do admit to liking @Benny thoughts about just retiring the character with Ford. Mind you I didn't think anyone could play Frank Drebin in Police Squad and Neeson nailed it.
I'm fine with a TV series if it means less over-the-top special effects.
If they did this they could clear up Indy’s early involvement with Marion.
Unless they decide to hire a another actor to play the part that is.
Please, no. Let's not try to explain everything. Leave some backstory locked up in mystery. Many characters appeal to us because they have already lived. They don't all need to have their origins exposed. Sometimes, the more you know, the more you end up no longer caring.
I must admit I have thought that a decent way to bring Indy back would be to do a Mandalorian-style Disney+ show, 30 min or so episodes, big set piece in each. That way you kind of bring it back to its matinee serial roots.
Agreed. Besides, there's nothing to clear up. The character was intended to be unlikable, whether we like it or not. No need to mess with Lucas and Spielberg's vision.
That said, I wouldn’t mind Indy’s young adult life explored ; the late 20’s/ early 30’s is a very adventure rich era. Of course the caveat is that it be done well with an appealing lead.
There are books (that are hard to find) that cover his early life. I think a book series again would be the best way to take the character. As Disney owns the character, it wouldn't surprise me if they brought Indy back sooner rather than later.
I am in no way championing a new screen incarnation of Dr. Jones; but I’m pragmatic. It’s a valuable IP and the powers that be will want to exploit it. If it’s going to happen I would want to see it set prior to the events of Raiders…
A cartoon or comics or something like that I’d be pretty happy with, but I get the feeling they’ve decided the market isn’t there. Which is a shame because for me, Indy is the best thing Lucasfilm ever did.
I absolutely agree. The Indiana Jones series has played a big part in my life growing up, and continues to do so today. However, talking to my students gives me the impression that a younger generation, on average, isn't at all interested anymore. Some of my students still 'know' Indy through their parents, and a minor few love at least one or two of the films, but that's it. I recall my classmates and I being excited about anything Indiana Jones, even in the nineties when not a lot was happening apart from the YIJC. When DOD came out, neither my students nor my colleagues were particularly keen on seeing the film. (Incidentally, the same holds true for Terminator. I used to think that "everybody" was into those films, but I was gravely mistaken.)
Maybe D+ could reinvigorate the old enthusiasm, if they deliver a truly great product with a charismatic lead. But like I wrote yesterday, speaking purely for myself, I'm not sure I need it. I'm fine with Indy being retired.
As Disney paid mega money to Lucas for Star Wars and Indy, they’re not likely to just stop.
But it wouldn’t bother me if Indy rode off into the sunset (again).
Bond survived very well without Connery.
Second, like Clouseau it would appear that Jones is tied to one actor and one actor only. I am not sure the fandom, or even the general movie going public would be accepting of another actor in the role. It took Martin et al almost 40 years from the last film to star Sellers to gain some traction.
I think Bond is a rare example of a character being able to have multiple actors. If another actor were to portray Jones they would need to change the character or the film tone would need to change. Would audiences except a "serious" Indy? The character was based on the serial films of the 30's and 40's. I am not sure you can change the tone and keep the character.
Good points!
I also wonder if the many Indy wannabe films, including some more recent treasure-hunting actioners, have possibly damaged the series' appeal. Bond keeps doing well despite a ton of parodies and spiritual offspring, but maybe Bond and Jones are two different meals on the menu.
