    This is a hard one for me. Less than 24 hours ago my dear mum passed away peacefully in her sleep. This was a blessing as her Dementia was deteriorating. Along with my late father who passed 3 years ago they were my real life heroes.

    The community on here is a huge comfort as obviously I have been here before. You all are my Quantum of Solace. Rogueagent out for a few hours.

    Very sorry to hear that @RogueAgent

    Thoughts with you at your sad news.

    At least your mother is at peace.

    Dear @RogueAgent,

    my sincere condolences for your mother's passing. Be sure that many of us feel they are with you at this moment, and many know your feelings exactly because they have encountered them as well. As probably one of the older (age, not membership) members around here, I saw my father sinking into dementia, along with Parkinson's, in the 90s, until passing away in 1996 at the age of 80 in a nursing home. My mother finally had to go to one in 1998, because she couldn't stay in her home for physical reasons (I tend to say because of an excessive amount of sports she practiced all her life, not for a lack of it), then also succumbed to dementia over time, passing away in 2007 shortly after her 91st birthday (a record in our family until her younger sister beat her to it by dying at the tender age of 97 last year). And in 2014, I saw the passing of my mother-in-law, at a somewhat younger age (84) but nevertheless with a similar career at the end of her life. Inability to keep living independently, nursing home, dementia.

    I cannot speak for you, nor for any others, but with developments like that I've always found that while the demise of a loved one is always regrettable, the ultimate passing can also be a bit of relief, since one would not consciously choose to keep on living like that. You wrote yourself that "this was a blessing", and you're right. It may not be a comfort to everyone involved, but I think it is a fair and reasonable feeling under the circumstances. And perhaps it does indeed provide you with the needed "quantum of solace".

    All the best to you.

    I second this. I am really sorry for your loss, but like you said-it is a blessing of sorts. Your mum is still around.

    @RogueAgent,

    As with everyone else, I extremely sorry to hear about your loss.

    I, too, lost my mother to dementia almost ten years ago, and the experience was – by far - the most painful chapter of my life thus far. Not a day passes by (still) that I don’t replay the hard decisions I had to make or see the images of her slowly slipping away from me. It hurts, and it always will.

    Without knowing your personal circumstances, I hope that in the weeks and months to come, you have friends and other family members to talk to and lean on for support. Often, our grief is “delayed” and can sneak up on us and manifest itself in ways that are unpredictable. In my case, it took me two years to realize that I was suffering from clinical depression as a result of my Mother’s passing.

    My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. And, as always, know that you are among friends here.

    @RogueAgent, I'm so sorry to hear that - as you say, it's one of those things where it's a blessing, in a sense, knowing they aren't suffering anymore. I went through the same sort of justification when my dad passed away a few years back, but either way, losing a parent or a loved one is never easy. I'm sorry for your loss.

    My condolences as well, @RogueAgent. I know how hard it must be for you right now.

    In other news, french actress Anna Karina, who had been the face of the Nouvelle Vague thanks to the movies of Jean-Luc Godard, has passed away from cancer, aged 79 :

    Thought I would appear out of the shadows to what I see as my invaluable online family. And to see all these words of support from the good people on here does restore my faith in the human spirit.

    I am aware after being on here for so long that we have all experienced loss and grief in some way or another? To have this on here with you all is a real privilege and it goes without saying that going forward members will have mine as and when it is ever needed.

    Thank you all so very much.

    @RogueAgent

    Please accept my sincerest condolences, friend. It can take a lifetime to find a harmonious relationship with one's parents, only to have them taken away too soon.
    Your mom is resting now, and she will be at peace.
    My girlfriend and I have just taken a pause from our busy lives, a few minutes of silence, out of respect for your mom.
    I'm here for you, RogueAgent; just drop a PM when you feel like it.
    When the stars shine brightest, don't forget to look up. One of them is watching over you...
