I'd argue the chemin-de-fer game in OHMSS has a strong impact as well on its film's story.

Agreed. However, this was looking at Bond versus the villains. So sadly, it was not included. I also considered the game between Bond and Onnatopp but since she was not the main villain that too went by the wayside.

    Clarification: :)

I didn't included the Poker scene from CR, because in my opinion, that's the main plot of the film.
The majority of the film focused on that, it's unfair for those other games/sports scenes between Bond and the villain.

Those games/sports here that I've included were just included in their respective films just to show the rivalry between Bond and the villain, without it making the whole plot for the film.

But if the CR poker scene was included I know it would win, but in my opinion (yes, the movie focused on this too much since it's the main plot of the film, it's a bit unfair).

About the other gambling scenes in the film (Chemin de Fer in OHMSS, and the Baccarat between Bond and Xenia in GE).

Those games that I've included were just between Bond and the Main villain.

I was tempted to go for TB, but I really do love Rog and Louis in that scene in OP, so that gets my vote!

You know what, I've considered this quite a bit and started typing a different winner twiice now, but I've changed my mind once more. CR is a good film, but the game is pivotal to the story and as such can hardly be seen as one game, for as long as it lasts. TB, GF and OP are so close tied together I wouldn't know which one to prefer, so my vote will go to DAD. The game starts friendly enough, but swiftly escalates into a strong rifalry. Even better, the villain scores the first points in a way you don't expect Bond to win.

Nice analysis, and nice to see some love for the DAD scene.

I agree with your analysis of the sequence. If only Madonna could be excised from the scene. ;)

The stakes do get high and the action quite ferocious and at times it gets very personal. I find it to be a highlight of the film.

"Yes I thought I saw a spectre at your shoulder."

    "What do you mean?"

"The spectre of defeat that your luck was due to change."

    later

"One of my associates spoke about you!"

    "Nothing bad I hope."

I love the whole TB scene so much. The carefree flick of the cards by Bond when he is winning. Largo's mounting frustration at losing. Domino in that gorgeous dress, Bond in the black tux and Largo in the dinner jacket. Reeks of style and glamour. For me it beats out GF by a smidge so I am going with TB for my vote.

    Goldfinger!

Octopussy is great, but mostly just for the one moment at the end.

I'm glad CR wasn't considered. It is too much of the movie proper, for one thing, and it's also exposition-heavy, to put it mildly. And it tends to follow the story beats of a generic sports movie--all of the side characters losing quickly, melodrama away from the game, an extremely contrived climax. It is a change from the standard Bond/villain competition, but it's within the MO of that movie to replace Bondian conventions with more generic film clichés.

First I state that GF, OP and TB are all too close to call, and now you want me to make a choice? Oh well, then it's going to be Goldfinger. The scene is even more pivotal to the story, but it remains a very, very close call.

Okay having found my lost ball, I have returned to the award stage and puffed my feathers! The Bondie for best gaming scene between Bond and the villain goes to...Goldfinger has trouble with his balls. Accepting the award is Hawking who isn't Arnold Palmer!

Next time to turn to a Klebbie! There are many performances within the films that excite us, enthrall us and even some that make us feel emotions. Then there are the hammy performances! The types of over-acting, over-emoting, and over the top acting that can take an audience out of a scene. In some cases, it fits the tone of the movie, in others it can feel like it doesn't belong.

Time to award a Klebbie to the hammiest performance in a Bond film. The nominees are:
    • Steven Berkoff for General Orlov! The whole tenor of OP was to be played straight and mix serious with fun. Steven doesn't seem to have gotten that memo and unleashes his performance. He over-emotes and over-acts. Some find this performance flawless. If you look at the definition of a ham actor, Steven Berkoff is there!
    • Jonathan Pryce for Elliot Carver! Again for some this performance is a guilty pleasure. Pryce seems to take delight inflating Elliot Carver with over the top emotions and acting. His taunting of Wai Lin on the stealth boat is one example of this crazy performance. It's enough to make our list.
    • David Dencik for Valdo Obruchev! This performance feels like it belongs in a different movie. At the start it draws some laughs for the humour, but as the movie wears on this one note performance tends to undercut scenes and not mesh with the other performances. For some this performance was a weak link in a strong movie.
    • Tanya Roberts for Stacey Sutton! JAMESSSSS! JAMESSSS! JAAAMMMEESSS! Tanya gave her screams and lungs a work out for this movie. Her performance is one note and grates on the audience. Especially in the climax of the movie. Her performance is text book ham and overacting!
    • Joe Don Baker Brad Whitaker! Joe Don is a good actor, but here he seems to have been told to be bombastic and crude. The result is a villain that is a buffoon in a movie that was trying to set a more serious tone. You can still be a megalomanic without the over acting

There you have it the nominees for hammy acting! For those that need a reference to what hammy acting is

    1. (Theatre) (of an actor) overacting or tending to overact
    2. (Theatre) (of a play, performance, etc) overacted or exaggerated

So what says the academy who deserves the kick in the shins for hammy acting?
  • NickTwentyTwoNickTwentyTwo Vancouver, BC, Canada

I might say Elliot for this, but he does it to great effect and deserves a Bondie for it, not a Klebbie. So my vote goes for Orlov.

I'm giving it to Berkoff but not as an insult - I love the OTT deliveries he gives. He's absolutely brilliant in Octopussy.

No shin kicks here, just plaudits.
