    Octopussy was such a good plot of course that Frederick Forsyth nicked it for The Fourth Protocol! :D
    Well, the novel came out the year after the film, but the plots are so similar it's hard not to wonder if the writers were at least talking to each other.

    It seems like it would've made a good Tom Clancy novel plot also. On close inspection, OP's plot is like an updated version of GF's plot i.e, main villain(Auric Goldfinger, Prince Kamal Khan) teams up with an official(Mr. Ling, General Orlov) from a communist superpower(Red China, Soviet Union) to smuggle a bomb onto an American military base in order to wreak havoc in the West.

    Yeah that's a fair take. I think AVTAK and TWINE are perhaps closer to GF in that their aims are similar i.e to destroy a valuable stake of a commodity so that their, already large, holdings in the same commodity increase hugely in value. TND also hovers slightly around there too, although it's not exactly the same as Carver needs to destroy a city in order to grow his company even further, but it's not a million miles off.

    I see TND as an updating of TSWLM's plot which by very definition makes it an updating of YOLT's plot also: villain(Carver, Stromberg, Blofeld) trying to start a war between a Western power(UK, USA) and a communist dictatorship(Red China, Soviet Russia) in order to achieve his plans for global domination.

    This is a close call between FRWL and TB for me. Not a bad performance amongst them (though DAF is my least favourite).

    I'll go with Thunderball. He's just absolutely effortless in that film. And he looked damn good in the diving gear. Top class.

    For me it's either DN or FRWL. The rough energy he brought to the role in DN was fantastic! However I think he was slightly more at ease in Russia, oozing class and suaveness meanwhile maintaining the edge from the first one. So FRWL it is.

    Whatever Bond film it is, Connery is very good in it. But I'll go with FRWL. I don't fear Red Grant like I should have, because of Connery's assured demeanour.

    Glad to see this thread back, nice to see you return @thedove

    Straight away I'm going to go for Thunderball. I think it's probably his worst film but he's absolutely on top of his game at this point: he's so incredibly charismatic and is doing some really beautifully judged subtle light comedy at exactly the right points. Even physically he dominates the film and is, frankly, so incredibly sexy that we absolutely do believe that those women he passes as he walks into the casino would turn back to look at him in real life just like they do in the film. I think it's the most confident and charismatic performance of Bond in any of the Bond films, not just Connery's. He's at his peak here.

    Lots of people say he looks bored in YOLT, which I've never agreed with. I can see perhaps that a little of that twinkle has gone though if you compare his performances next to each other, and he's maybe not coming up with those little extra ideas that perhaps he did the last time around (and would again for DAF). He's still Connery though, so still great.

    From Russia With Love. My favorite Connery performance in one of my top overall films. Only issue is that we have to wait so long into we finally see him.

    Yes @Last_Rat_Standing I believe it's 18 minutes before he's properly seen. If we don't count the "Bond" on SPECTRE island.

    I agree with many of the academy that TB represents perhaps his peak. He's in great form and shape. I do like the light performances of GF and DAF too. I am glad I am not voting on this one.

    I vote Thunderball, wherein Connery's performance combines the best of this previous three stints - the danger, the confidence, the light touch, the athleticism, and sheer charisma.

    Dr No. His maturity really shines through and he really plays Bond’s experience well despite not having much himself. So many scenes where he displays the humour in Bond (arresting Miss Taro) and the dark side in Bond (killing of Professor Dent). But really you could choose any performance from Sean and it would be equally as valid.

    Generally, I don’t think Connery ever delivered a “phoned-in” performance as Bond. Even at the height of his dissatisfaction with the producers during YOLT’s filming, he still comes across as respecting the role. That said, while TB is not my favorite Connery 007 movie, I think it contains his best overall performance. Assured and stylish, by his fourth outing, Connery has “Bond” down to a pat, yet he still appears to be fully engaged and energetic.

    They are all good. But for me it is DN purely because he sets the template and is perfect from the off. He has more to do in the rest of the films, but that isn't always a good thing for the character of Bond. So much of what makes the character is watching how he walks through an airport, or a casino, or how he sits. It is the small moments. Connery was the best at that stuff out of all the actors to play the role.

    Connery was too good in all of his films. I am not one who sees him sleepwalking in YOLT, and I find his comedic timing in DAF to be impeccable. However, Thunderball seems to be the film that captures Connery at his very, very best. Physically he's lean and looks ruggedly handsome, but his "sex factor" is through the roof because his confidence is evident in every single frame of this film. His charming and disarming effortlessness further raises his appeal. This is certainly the film and performance that crystalizes the idea that women wanted to be with him, men wanted to be him.

    Unmatched....
