    I work in UK local government. We’ve all been told to expect redeployment to support essential teams, leaving our current teams. The first essential team under pressure is Registration, who are gearing up for Italy-style (perhaps even Iran-style) death numbers. They are the people who legally have to register deaths. In the UK death registration has to be done within a certain time limit and has to be done face-to-face too with a Registration officer, remote registration is unlawful. The government may waive that law if deaths rise. Registration were the only team in the whole authority who actually had a pandemic plan, now they’re implementing it. Coroners team are likewise gearing up. Social Care must have some sort of battle plan I suppose too but they are culturally very different from the rest of us (they work more closely with NHS than with us anyway) and I don’t know what it might be. Personally I am expecting to be redeployed to Registration as I work in the same building, so I could register deaths. On the other hand I am a budget holder, so they might leave me where I am. Moving budget holders (especially at the end of the U.K. financial year, when accounts need to be closed off, only 2 weeks away) might cause more problems than it solves. We shall see. I have seen Registration staff in tears at meetings, planning for what is likely to be coming down the slipway towards them.

    Scary when you see the comparison. The final death total for that flu back then was 14,286.

    CV is currently at 13,598 and counting rapidly each day. We're months away from this even peaking. Who knows what the final figure will be.

    As of 12pm Monday all pubs, clubs, restaurants, cafes, churches, cinemas and casinos across Australia will be closed.
    As of Tuesday all internal boards will be closed to all but essential travel.

    It was only a matter of time. We (UK) went into social lockdown last Friday.

    I think by the end of next week we will be in a more severe, controlled lockdown, similar to what we are seeing in other parts of Europe.

    Italy has recorded 651 deaths today. They are now the first country to reach 5,000 total deaths (5,476). Italy has recorded more deaths in the last 6 days (March 17th to March 22nd) than China has recorded in total from November 2019 to March 2020 (4 months).

They're aborted in the womb. So let's cut this cr hysteria. I'm sick of it. Sorry to rant but the hypocrisy of cr is staggering and I'm genuinely sick of it. If you gonna weep for dead Italians then maybe weep for the 23,000 dead flu victims in the US and elsewhere in the world. They're just as deserving.

    Hahahahahaha... I’d like to punch you right now. 15 days of quarantine and counting... COVID killing more people in one day that the seasonal flu in a month and that’s your take on the situation?     I'd like to think this person is just trolling everyone to be a WUM. Bad taste I know, considering the environment we are in now, but if he is not trolling, and actually being serious, then maybe he is suffering from a mental illness. We shouldn't really judge him, because we don't know what is going on in his life right now.

    Warnings are not necessarily made public and we do deal with members who step out of line. Rest assured appropriate action will be taken.

    Just as a suggestion, perhaps posters who strongly disagree with a certain person's view should not necessarily quote that person's posting in its entirety when replying. That only perpetuates and repeats the offensive stuff. Just as I don't find it too helpful when everybody copies and pastes links to videos etc. in a discussion when responding, leading to the same image shown umpteen times in the same thread.

    Good points @matt_u and @j_w_pepper. I think the concern is not that young people are dying from coronavirus, it’s that many are getting sick enough to require hospitalization before they recover. And that puts a strain on medical facilities. Again, this could be something that is unique to the US, but it bears watching. And as you stated, the overwhelming number of actual deaths is still being experienced by those 65 and up.

    I didn't take it that seriously myself up until just over a week ago. I thought we were all overreacting, and it was just another strain of flu.

    It didn't really hit me until I watched that Sky News report in the Italy hospitals. This is not flu. The doctors treating it are describing it as chronic pneumonia.

    When you see people my age under ventilators in beds, and you realise this is not just the elderly getting hit by this, and how quickly this is spreading, and how hospitals are not coping is when I became genuinely frightened.

    The UK is ahead of Italy and China in its trajectory, and yet we are still not under a lockdown yet. People are still going out and mingling, as though they are on holiday.

    A bomb is about to be dropped on us, and it is already too late, even if we go into lockdown now. This time next week I dread to think where the UK will be.

    Not having a go at any individuals on this forum but we are in this mess not only because of the virus but our refusal, as a society, to take it seriously. (BJ still guilty of that). Our love of personal freedom and a refusal or lack of understanding re the nature of "exponential" has lead to this issue. other countries "got it" much earlier: It's a harsh fact but thousands are going to die needlessly. "Oh, it's just like the flu, fancy going down the pub?"

    There was a lockdown party in a Belgian café. Fine: € 4000.

    Dutch citizens who want to refuel their cars here will be punished. The fine is the same as in the above case.

    Stating the obvious but you can't "un-infect" someone. Fines are good but the damage is done.

    Fines may be the only way to talk some sense into some people. There are still those who believe this is not that bad, or who think it a hoax of sorts, or--even more disconcerting--who believe themselves invulnerable.

    Don't worry, when Belgians know they'll have to pay for something, they cowardly retreat. ;-)

    Spain has recorded 462 deaths today so far, becoming the 3rd country after China and Italy to reach 2,000 total deaths. The Worldwide death-toll has now passed 15,000.

    1st death from coronavirus: January 9th.
    100 deaths reached on January 27th (18 days later).
    500 deaths reached on February 5th (9 days later).
    1,000 deaths reached on February 10th (5 days later).
    5,000 deaths reached on March 13th (32 days later).
    10,000 deaths reached on March 19th (6 days later).
    15,000 deaths reached on March 23rd (4 days later).
