From Russia With Love, Ian Fleming, 1957.
Chapter Thirteen - `B.E.A. Takes You There ...'

The four small, square-ended propellers turned slowly, one by one, and became four whizzing pools. The low hum of the turbo-jets rose to a shrill smooth whine. The quality of the noise, and the complete absence of vibration, were different from the stuttering roar and straining horsepower of all other aircraft Bond had flown in. As the Viscount wheeled easily out to the shimmering east-west runway of London Airport, Bond felt as if he was sitting in an expensive mechanical toy.

There was a pause as the chief pilot gunned up the four turbo-jets into a banshee scream and then, with a jerk of released brakes, the 10.30 B.E.A.

Flight 130 to Rome, Athens and Istanbul gathered speed and hurtled down the runway and up into a quick, easy climb.
In ten minutes they had reached 20,000 feet and were heading south along the wide air-channel that takes the Mediterranean traffic from England. The scream of the jets died to a low, drowsy whistle. Bond unfastened his seat-belt and lit a cigarette. He reached for the slim, expensive-looking attaché case on the floor beside him and took out The Mask of Dimitrios by Eric Ambler and put the case, which was very heavy in spite of its size, on the seat beside him. He thought how surprised the ticket clerk at London Airport would have been if she had weighed the case instead of letting it go unchecked as an `overnight bag'. And if, in their turn, Customs had been intrigued by its weight, how interested they would have been when it was slipped under the Inspectoscope.

Q Branch had put together this smart-looking bag, ripping out the careful handiwork of Swaine and Adeney to pack fifty rounds of .25 ammunition, in two flat rows, between the leather and the lining of the spine. In each of the innocent sides there was a flat throwing knife, built by Wilkinsons, the sword makers, and the tops of their handles were concealed cleverly by the stitching at the corners. Despite Bond's efforts to laugh them out of it, Q's craftsmen had insisted on building a hidden compartment into the handle of the case, which, by pressure at a certain point, would deliver a cyanide death-pill into the palm of his hand. (Directly he had taken delivery of the case, Bond had washed this pill down the lavatory.) More important was the thick tube of Palmolive shaving cream in the otherwise guileless sponge-bag. The whole top of this unscrewed to reveal the silencer for the Beretta, packed in cotton wool. In case hard cash was needed, the lid of the attaché case contained fifty golden sovereigns. These could be poured out by slipping sideways one ridge of welting.

The complicated bag of tricks amused Bond, but he also had to admit that, despite its eight-pound weight, the bag was a convenient way of carrying the tools of his trade, which otherwise would have to be concealed about his body.

You Only Live Twice, Ian Fleming, 1964.
    Chapter 11 - Anatomy Class

    ...
“You do not catch the still-life quality of these verses? The flash of insight into humanity, into nature? Now, do me a favour, Bondo-san. Write a haiku for me yourself. I am sure you could get the hang of it. After all you must have had some education?”

Bond laughed. “Mostly in Latin and Greek. All about Caesar and Balbus and so on. Absolutely no help in ordering a cup of coffee in Rome or Athens after I”d left school. And things like trigonometry, which I've totally forgotten. But give me a pen and a piece of paper and I”ll have a bash, if you”ll forgive the bad joke.” Tiger handed them over and Bond put his head in his hands. Finally, after much crossing out and rewriting he said, “Tiger, how's this? It makes just as much sense as old Basho and it's much more pithy.”
    He read out:
    “You only live twice:
    Once when you are born
And once when you look death in the face.”

Tiger clapped his hands softly. He said with real delight, “But that is excellent, Bondo-san. Most sincere.” He took the pen and paper and jotted some ideograms up the page. He shook his head. “No, it won't do in Japanese. You have the wrong number of syllables. But it is a most honourable attempt.” He looked keenly at Bond. “You were perhaps thinking of your mission?”

    “Perhaps,” said Bond with indifference.

“It is weighing on your mind?”

“The practical difficulties are bound to do so. I have swallowed the moral principles involved. Things being as they are, I have to accept that the end justifies the means.”

“Then you are not concerned with your own safety?”

“Not particularly. I've had worse jobs to do.”

"I must congratulate you on your stoicism. You do not appear to value your life as highly as most Westerners.” Tiger looked at him kindly. “Is there perhaps a reason for that?"

    Hello there!

I’m Irina Bond, a Ukrainian-born blogger living in Orange County, California, with my very own ‘Mr. Bond’ and our baby girl Vienna. I started BondGirlGlam.com in 2013 as an online community about personal style, beauty, home décor — everything lifestyle for modern-day ‘Bond Girls.’

Why the name Bond Girl Glam? It was surprisingly hard to come up with a blog name that was catchy and memorable, but I felt like Bond Girl Glam was appropriate with my last name and love for all things glamorous. It just worked, and I ran with it.

A ‘Bond Girl’ knows what she wants and how to get it. She’s elegant while still being edgy, classic yet contemporary, feminine with a touch of masculinity — all in one package. There’s an effortless allure about her that we all want to adopt into our lives. We know her character from the movies, but what we really want is real-life applications of her undeniable magnetism — myself included.

By no means am I claiming to be a Bond Girl, or that I’m perfect, or that anyone out there must be perfect, but I do love to share things that bring me joy and make me feel a little more glam as a mama.

I hope you stay a while! You can click on the categories above for tons of content as well as subscribe for email notifications whenever new posts come out. Also, you can follow me on Instagram and Snapchat (irinabond) for my everyday shenanigans!

    xoxo, Irina

    Manticore / μαρτιχώρα / 'man·ti·kôr / noun
    1. Greek name for a Persian mythical combination of lion, man's face, and lethal tail

Late Middle English via Old French via Latin via Greek (mantikhōras). Greek (μαρτιχώρα, martichora, also androphagos). Literally: man-eater.

Manticore (μαρτιχώρα ): an unbeatable creature of Central Asia usually described as a combination of man's head, lion's body, and a scorpion tail of multiple stingers--sometimes quills that can shoot out at a target. Impenetrable skin. Three rows of teeth. Some versions have wings.

Consumers of all other creatures excepting elephants, which are able to escape and avoid the Manticore. It has a taste for humans, and in action can patiently lie in wait for opportunities to consume 3 or more at a time. Lying in grass or reeds with only a bearded face exposed, it lures its prey with a voice sounding like a trumpet but no spoken words. Hearing such music is a tell-tale sign of the Manticore. Draws comparison to the Chimera and Sphinx.

Luxury yacht built in Sweden by experienced yacht owner and designed especially for charters. As the promotional materials says - it offers unique leisure and relaxation possibilities, for quiet and party oriented customers, as well as those who like watersports. More detailed info you can find on web pages of the charter specialised companies. Maybe these attributes convinced the producers to use it for the movie. Yacht fitted perfectly the style of Xena Onatopp. Great, perfect shape, luxury. Due to this last thing Bond didn't have time to benefit all the pleasures of the onboard journey - good for the yacht, as we recall the common fate of the vehicles driven by 007.

At the time of the filming of GoldenEye, the yacht was owned by Finnish Businessman Jorma Lillbacka, who owns the power machine company, Finn-Power.
The onboard scenes were shot in the port Hercule, Monaco.

Yacht was refurbished in 2001. In March 2006 Yacht was quoted for sale by "CSO Yachts" broker (headquartered in France) Selling Price was EUR 7,250,000. Boat still available for charter in several companies. If you can afford it and don't have friends to invite for a cruise - mail me instantly.

Nothing more found on the Manticore as related to Bond.

I want to add that Canadian Admiral Chuck Farrell (actor Billy J. Mitchell) with beard favors the early illustrations of the beast. Since the filmmakers chose the yacht name (over the real world Northern Star) I have to wonder if that was by design.

    Eunuch / εὐνοῦχος / ˈyo͞o·nək / noun
    1. a castrated man
    2. a castrated man in service to or guarding women
    3. an ineffective person

Old English (eunuch). Latin (eunuchus). Greek (εὐνοῦχος or eunoukhos, bedroom guard).

Eunuch (εὐνοῦχος): the result of intentional male castration usually at an early age, with hormonal consequences. Eunuchs perform or performed specific social functions serving religion, as courtiers, as soldiers/guards, in government, and as treble singers. A eunuch could simultaneously hold a low status but also possess an inherent power by their association with (serving) royalty. On the other hand, most could be swapped out or even killed without consequence. Castration itself alternately served as punishment, or for eunuchs as a procedure toward employment.

Castration prior to puberty preserved a high-pitched, treble vocal skill for eunuchs known as castrati, and the individual as a castrato. Though the procedure did not guarantee the ability. Where the singing of women was forbidden, castratism filled the void as late as the 19th Century in Europe.

    Griffin / γρύψ / ˈɡrif·ən / noun
    1. creature of myth, half eagle (head, wings, front talons), half lion (body)
Old French (grifoun). Latin (gryphus). Greek (γρύψ, grýps grups, grup γρύφων, grýphōn, or γρύπων, grýpōn).

Griffin (Gryphus, also Griffon, Gryphon): already described above as part lion; part eagle. Notice the combination of the eagle (king of birds) and lion (king of beasts)—therefore the Griffin takes on that stature, a king of earthly creatures. Guardian of treasures, especially gold. Said to lay eggs in nests as nuggets of gold.

Heraldic Griffin: front legs of an eagle.

In folklore, Adrienne Mayor suggested the source of the Griffin as a misunderstanding of Protoceratops, based on fossils found in gold mines.

On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, Ian Fleming, 1963.
Chapter 6 – Bond of Bond Street?

She giggled unprofessionally. 'It sounds fairly peaceful, as peaceful as a hurry message from upstairs can be. You're to go at once to the College of Arms and ask for Griffon Or.'

The College of Arms is in Queen Victoria Street on the fringe of the City. It is a pleasant little Queen Anne backwater in ancient red brick with white sashed windows and a convenient cobbled courtyard, where Bond parked his car. There are horseshoe-shaped stone stairs leading up to an impressive entrance, over which, that day, there hung a banner showing a splendid heraldic beast, half animal and half bird, in gold against a pale blue background. Griffon, thought Bond. Made of Or. He went through the door into a large gloomy hall whose dark panelling was lined with the musty portraits of proud-looking gentlemen in ruffs and lace, and from whose cornice hung the banners of the Commonwealth. The porter, a kindly, soft-spoken man in a cherry-coloured uniform with brass buttons, asked Bond what he could do for him. Bond asked for the Griffon Or and confirmed that he had an appointment.

'Ah yes, sir,' said the porter mysteriously.' Griffon Or is in waiting this week. That is why his banner is flying outside. This way please, sir.'

Bond followed the porter along a passage hung with gleaming coats of arms in carved wood, up a dank, cobwebby staircase, and round a corner to a heavy door over which was written in gold 'Griffon Or Pursuivant' under a representation of the said golden griffon.
Chapter 7 - The Hairy Heel of Achilles

JAMES BOND'S heart was still in his boots as he was conducted again through the musty corridors. Sable Basilisk indeed! What kind of a besotted old fogy would this be?

There came another heavy door with the name in gold and this time with a nightmare black monster, with a vicious beak, above it. But now Bond was shown into a light, clean, pleasantly furnished room with attractive prints on the walls and meticulous order among its books. There was a faint smell of Turkish tobacco. A young man, a few years younger than Bond, got up and came across the room to meet him. He was rapier-slim, with a fine, thin, studious face that was saved from seriousness by wry lines at the edges of the mouth and an ironical glint in the level eyes.

'Commander Bond?' The handshake was brief and firm. ' I'd been expecting you. How did you get into the claws of our dear Griffon? He's a bit of an enthusiast, I'm afraid. We all are here, of course. But he's getting on. Nice chap, but he's a bit dedicated, if you know what I mean.'

Never Say Never Again, Irvin Kershner, 1983.

In Spain (specifically Almeria—which is not Granada, which in turn is not Grenada), the film showcases the Griffon vulture or Eurasian griffon in a way bird life is rarely seen in Bond films. Well done.

If it hasn't been posted already...

Strictly speaking not Greek, of course, but solidly of Roman origin are the mottos of Bond and Blofeld's coats of arms in OHMSS; given they're both in Latin:

Bond - 'Orbis non sufficit' (The world is not enough)
Blofeld - 'Arae et foci' (For hearth and home)

Thanks, @St_George, I'll table that for the eventual AND ROMAN! expansion to properly represent Hercules and others. Those are good ones.

There are still Greek items to address first. I'll make some progress.

    Abacus / άβακας / ˈa-bə-kəs / noun
    1. a physical calculator usually with disks as counters sliding along rods or in grooves
2 : a stone slab forming the upper part of a column structure
    abacus_14057_mth.gif2e9cfbab0a3af4363e085a05cda7db19--architectural-styles-arches.jpg

Greek (ἄβα or abax, without base; ἄβακoς or abakos). Latin (abaci quadram, sandboard abacus).

Abacus (άβακας): an apparatus for counting, devised before written numbers were in common use. Different than a counting board, an abacus has a wooden frame and metal rods on which beads or disks can be moved to indicate a count.

Their use is traced from ancient times to the Middle Ages and modern day.
    timelines3.JPG
The 21st Century abacus is rarely but still found in small shops calculating total costs or quantities. And more commonly found as phone apps or computer learning tools. A valuable combination of physical and electronic forms is available for young learners.
