    Watching the Fleming documentary now!

Let us know what you think!
  • Reading from Moonraker at the cliffs of Dover and showing us inside Fleming's room at Kitzbühel were certainly nice touches. Also interesting to see that the translators of the German editions were women and to hear them advocate for women to read Fleming's Bonds, calling them romances.

That is interesting! Bond was written from the start to be read by both men and women, and somewhere along the way publishers lost sight of that and started marketing them as manly sexy thrillers. Today's world of books is very divided along boy book / girl book lines, with visual cues like fonts and imagery to tell you which ones you're supposed to read.

I think the current run of Vintage book covers for Bond is more gender-neutral again, which is one reason I like them so much.

(That turned into a bit of a rant, but the way books by women are marketed as being only for women to read is a sore point.)

I’ve been in planes all day. Now in the Detroit airport, soon off to Binghamton. I’m just about finished with DAF; I have FRWL and DN packed!

I hope your flights are going ok, between the government shutdown and the bad weather.

Good stuff. I've got about two or three chapters left of FRWL then it's on to DN, hopefully tomorrow.

    Oh good Creasy.

It's so easy to fly through them when I'm not preoccupied with work or a ton of films.

I read them once. Don't remember. Does that count?

How's your flight reading going, @Birdleson? Also, does anyone else have censored swear words in their copies?

So far, the "n-word" has yet to be censored in any of mine. I believe I saw a usage of the "f-word" blotted once in either FRWL or DAF, probably the former.

Fleming was not a fan of profanity in print and said so on a couple of occasions. The Bond novels are notable for avoiding any swearwords stronger than "damn" or "bastard." The only exception is the Rasta in TMWTGG who says "Sheeit."

The n-word was edited out of the American editions of LALD and DAF. But after 2003 most copies sold in America have been reprints of the original British edition.

Okay. I really did think that my stupid editions were editing out stuff that the British versions had.

    Tiffany Case says "f**k" then.

I'm alright. Finished Dr No a couple days ago. What an unpleasant way to go. At least it wasn't human defecation.

Jealous, @Birdleson, let me know your thoughts on them! I know once I buy one, I'll use that to jumpstart yet another read through of the series.

And fear not, I've only 50 or so pages left of DN. I'm seeing it through to the end this time.

That gives me an idea for the climax of the next Bond film...

I'm catching up to the last proposed 7-day schedule, to be at Goldfinger (Monday January 28-Monday February 4) and "Quantum of Solace" (Tuesday February 5-Tuesday February 12).

    Some quick notes.

    Moonraker
    Poker played at Blades.
    Grand Slam.
    Krebs compared to Peter Lorre.
    Delta fins on the Moonraker.
    Paroxysm. Cyclops. Gyro.
    Devil May Care

    Diamonds Are Forever
"That was quite an exit. Like something out of an old Buster Keaton film."
    Devil-may-care
    Death Is Forever

    From Russia With Love
"There is a man called Mathis at the head of it. A Mendès-France appointment. He would be a tempting target and it would be easy to operate in France."

I'm sorry, what's being brought up here? Connections to the films?

Yeah, just random items I thought were of interest.

Poker played at Blades I thought compares to the Casino Royale film choosing poker over baccarat,

Grand Slam is used in a later book. The Greek mentions are interest to me. Other film/pop culture references. Phrases that became Bond titles. That kind of stuff.

It just occurred to me; though they are a staple of the films, the only Fleming novels to feature a female worthy of being called a “Secondary” Bond Girl are GF and OHMSS.

That shows how much GF impacted the formula of the Bond films. Pat Fearing in TB is a semi-example of a secondary Bond girl, though she's only in the first quarter of the book. But Bond does get to bed her.

I know dogs were [and are] occasionally consumed in Korea and the parts of the far east, but were cats also eaten? Or is Fleming just being nasty to Koreans again?

Cats and dogs are quite a common aspect of Korean cuisine.

According to wikipedia, "In Korea, cat meat was historically brewed into a tonic as a folk remedy for neuralgia and arthritis. Modern consumption is decreasing and more likely to be in the form of cat soup."
