Haven't collected any of these special editions myself (at least not yet), but seeing as the illustrator is involved in a controversy like this does put me off getting them. Having done occasional illustration work myself, seeing illustrators do cheap stuff like this is very annoying.

The whole thing has soured me a ton after I fell in love with these editions and expected a beautiful complete set. I'm considering selling all my editions for some extra cash at this point. Just so aggravating and upsetting. I hope they at least make the spine matching with the others if nothing else, and whatever the art style is isn’t too radically different. I had really counted on these being my lifetime edition Bond books, but if the last one is too different it’ll really taint the experience for me after everything.

I fully expect the Octopussy edition to match all the others in every way except the artists name. And I think the artwork will be in keeping with the style of the previous books, so for me, I'm not too bothered that one edition will have a different artist. Though I'd have preferred them all by the same artist, it's always been in the back of my mind that expecting the same artist to illustrate a run of books over ten years is a big ask (the first Folio, Casino Royale came out in 2015, mine is the 3rd printing from 2018).
Perhaps the delay in the printing has been of a result of finding a new artist that will mirror the style of Dalton, yet still keep their own integrity.
I wonder if Dalton was jumped or pushed? Not that it matters. It does seem a shame for her, that she won't complete the set.

I wonder if any of the Dalton Folio artwork has been lifted from somewhere else? From what I've seen online, no-one's found copying involved with the Folio editions.
And really, if it transpired that some of FD's work for the Folios was borrowed from somewhere else, it wouldn't affect my enjoyment of the editions a jot.
What do other Folio collectors thin about this?
    My feelings . . . it's a shame she's not finishing the set.

I'm not a fan of AI art but maybe this is the exception to the rule...to complete the set?

100% agree, I’m sure it’ll be identical to the others in every way except the art. For me, the use of AI art to keep it consistent with Dalton would be absolute worst case scenario. To get Dalton off for stealing art just to solve the problem by… stealing art?

Add me to the list of people incredibly disappointed there'll be someone else doing the art for the last book.

I get that there's a very good reason for the switch but part of me wishes they'd kept consistency throughout.

Yeah, I’m just going to wait and see how the last book looks first before making a decision with my books. Matched spine and format of text and everything is the main thing, and hopefully a very similar art style that won’t be jarring from the others. Honestly, I’d rather have no illustrations for this one if they look too different.

Does this mean that the new artist will have to in a sense "plagiarise" the work of Fay Dalton to keep the art looking uniform across all of the volumes?

Think of it this way . . . all your full length Folio James Bond novels are uniform, with artwork by the same artist. That's done and dusted, in the bag, a lovely collection!
As for the two short story collections, they happen to have have two different artists illustrating them, (it just so happens one of them is the same artist that did the full length novels).
On a more serious note, it's worth mentioning that, due to current public sensibilities, this series of Fleming JB books might be the last time for many years that the original first edition texts are on the market. I'm definitely keeping mine, and I'm still looking forward to 'pussy.

True, there’s some comfort in the full-length novels having fully made it. Just mentally sighing over and over here and thinking “why couldn’t this controversy have waited until after OP & TLD?” Haha. Also a good point you make about uncensored first edition text. There just wasn’t another set of the Bond books I could find that looked so appealing - hardcover, uncensored, beautiful artwork, the whole works up until this very last issue. And we’re probably never going to get better.

I think much of the hand wringing over 'censored' Fleming books is a bit reactionary, (I believe there are far less edits than people think, and I wonder how many people have actually read and compared the 'censored' versions with the originals).
However, I do think the Folio people should be applauded for keeping to the original first edition texts, and treating their readers like people who appreciate historical accuracy and actually understand context.
I'm a Folio fan, and I think Octopussy and the Living Daylights will be lovely. I think they'll make sure it is.

I’ll be ordering OatLD day one, sight unseen. I’m sure the bindings/covers will match the rest, and I trust Folio Society’s ability to find an appropriate artist.
To be 13 14ths the way to a full collection and stop short of this one for whatever reason is just not tenable for me.
