I hope we can be more open as a country. We shall see. :)

OK, you and I can differ on Bernie. I do feel for sure he would not win the majority of voters in our country. I definitely do not see him as a strong leader, let alone someone who could face off against Trump. Just my opinion. I do think his jumping into it now, at his age and with his track record along with the impact from the last election, is not a good thing. The Democrats will have a better candidate. But it's okay for us to disagree, of course.

Who do you think is the strongest Democratic candidate of those we know of so far?

So far it is developing. I don't have a clear favorite. But I like that a few are stepping up already. I think Beto could do some real good, if he ran, as president or ended up being vice president; though much is still unknown. Note: Nobody runs for vice president. I have think this over and get back with you later on current candidates.

Bernie is big. I like Gabbard & Warren, but Bernie is gonna be Pres. Young folk, the shrinking (basically non-existent) middle class, non-whites, and even disillusioned Trumpers will make it so.

@4Ever I think you can count on Biden to run, and I think he'll stand a very good chance. Personally I just want Castro to win for his name. Cuba and the US run by Castro's, pity Fidél isn't alive anymore ;-)

You know, I somehow feel we should have a separate thread for 2020 U.S. Presidential Election. I don't want this World Events thread swamped with Trump (in spite of the content I post here the majority of the time).

Yes, Biden would be a strong candidate and higher on my list if he would choose to run. Even at his age, though I think we would be well served by a younger candidate IF of course that candidate was thoroughly vetted and had policies I agree with.

So, when Trump & Pence & Co. negotiate immunity and resign & Nancy becomes POTUS for the rest of the term, do you think she'll run in 2020? I hope not...

I do think that most likely Pence will escape. And we will be stuck with him, if Trump is out before 2020. "Stuck" for how long, I don't know.

I'm not saying Pence should get away with anything. He shouldn't and is up to his neck in everything this administration condoned and planned. But I am thinking he may be able to escape prosecution. I won't be surprised if he does, maybe due to plea bargaining. I don't know if he would resign or try stick as president. I think Trump will be prosecuted and sentenced, but I am not clear if Pence will be gone.

Nancy has more sense than to actually want that pressure cooker of a job. Besides, we already know that Lisa Simpson is destined to follow DJT as President.

  • Totally agreed re: the fate of Trump. I have heard it argued that Pence has to have been aware of much of what's been going on, therefore he's been involved in the obstruction of justice and must also be impeached. Nancy COULD get the job temporarily whether she wants it or not...

Providing enough proof to ensure conviction for Trump is the priority. Getting all of the corruption and criminal actions laid out in a way that provides prosecution to continue, to succeed in all courts of law.

Pence has been smart enough to be involved yet not so explicitly - he was aware from the beginning, I think, of the need to distance himself. He may have covered his tracks enough so that prosecuting him would not be a slam dunk. If he goes down, I will be surprised (though pleased, as he is complicit, I do believe that).

Young children? Jeffrey Epstein? Wouldn't surprise me in the slightest, it's right up his alley.

Is this still a thing? You guys continue to poke fun about it, but it seems to me the complaint and the joke are long out of date.

I think if Clinton were to run again, the far thornier issue would be her support of Bill, an alleged rapist. In this MeToo era in which people believe all victims and Al Franken got ousted from a Senate seat for his idiotic behavior, Hillary would be raked across the coals ... and probably deservedly so.

    https://www.vox.com/2018/10/15/17978156/hillary-clinton-monica-lewinsky-interview-bill-clinton-sexual-misconduct-metoo

Here's a heckler interrupting Clinton about it during a speech:

I'll also add that the Clintons are connected to Jeffrey Epstein. That's not a good look either.

What about, what about, what about??? A) Nobody here is defending Bill Clinton, who isn't currently running for office and probably never will again. B) If you're going to tar & feather Bill Clinton for knowing Jeffrey Epstein then you're going to need a whole lot more T&F, as Epstein is a self-confessed "collectror" of famous friends. C) No one has accused Bill of raping them at an Epstein party. This is more than Trump can say. D) Talk to me about ANY Clinton crimes when they're accused of money laundering for Russia and, frankly, treason. These are Trump's crimes and he will pay for them, I assure you.

Nor was I implying that anyone in this thread was defending Clinton, but please continue trying to obfuscate the real issues if that makes you happy.

When it hasn't focused on Trump's legal problems, this thread has been dipping into the presidential race, and folks here have been adding their two cents about candidates for the Democratic primaries. I was speculating that if Hillary threw her hat into the race again, she would have problems defending the support of her husband in a MeToo society. That apparently bothers you, for some reason.
    B) If you're going to tar & feather Bill Clinton for knowing Jeffrey Epstein then you're going to need a whole lot more T&F, as Epstein is a self-confessed "collectror" of famous friends.

Well, we'll just see, won't we? Clinton's had some credible accusers come forward with no connection to Epstein. Were Hillary to run again, she would have to deal with it.
    D) Talk to me about ANY Clinton crimes when they're accused of money laundering for Russia and, frankly, treason. These are Trump's crimes and he will pay for them, I assure you.

I'd be perfectly fine seeing Trump go down in flames (in addition to the Clintons). But I'm not going to "assure" anybody of anything, because that's just stupid. Surely you understand.

Eh, well ... then again, I am communicating with the guy who actually believes that Trump's machinations are as bad as a dictator's systematic genocide -- so, yeah, maybe you don't get it at all.

Trump's machinations include (but are not limited to) systematically separating children from their parents and then just kinda losing track of them -- so yeah, his crimes are pretty bad. And your efforts to excuse them are pretty obvious. What I don't get is why you feel the need to keep excusing a man that about 70% of America has come to believe is guilty of criminal offenses.

Just trying to make sure I'm covered here: If one job is defending Trump on the internet... and a second job is defending the Republican party on the internet....and a third job is defending the NRA on the internet...and a fourth job is defending Russian meddling with our elections on the internet...then I've got my living wage, right? Who do I have to defend on the internet to get my health care?

Health care requires a job in Congress.

It has already been reported that the Trump admin. has kept files on reporters who disagree with them or criticize them. Including reporters' personal family information. Today I just read this:

This is going under the radar, but I feel we need to be aware of things like this, too.
And this from the article: (underline and bolding is mine, not in the article) ~
One lawyer from the list who was recently stopped at a San Diego-area crossing, Nicole Ramos, refugee director for Al Otro Lado, a law center for migrants in Tijuana, Mexico, learned from NBC News that CBP had compiled a dossier of information on her. The dossier included personal details such as her mother’s name, her social media pictures, the car she drives and her work and travel history.

"The document ... appears to prove what we have assumed for some time, which is that we are on a law enforcement list designed to retaliate against human rights defenders who work with asylum-seekers and who are critical of CBP practices that violate the rights of asylum seekers," Ramos said.
