An attempt to replicate the underwater breathing device has received $820,000 of the gullible public's money despite being scientifically impossible...

The CIA of the 1960s thought it was really possible too when they saw Thunderball and rang up the producers looking for one! They told them it worked depending on how long you could hold your breath underwater! :))

The really dumb thing is that you can buy small, emergency scuba tanks that aren't that much bigger than Bond's re-breather. Obviously they are not the same as the Bond gadget, but at least they...exist.

Re-breather? What? I thought Q made it clear from his description of how it worked that it was a simple micro-tank of compressed air... :-?

Indeed. Isn't it just two very small oxygen tanks and a mouthpiece? Don't see why it's scientifically impossible to build.

    This is basically it: http://www.spareair.com/product/models.html

The size of a Coke can and gives you enough air for 30 breaths.

Bond's is at least half the size though so thats 15 breaths max. I suppose if you hold your breath after each one 4 minutes would be possible as Q claims but not if you're exerting yourself.

Hmm... I guess I should pay more attention. I've only subjected myself to a viewing of Thunderball once.
