What can be done about the absurd amount of spam?

SarkSark Guangdong, PRC
I thought the amount of spam posts would slow now that SP is out of theaters, but their terroristic activities continue unabated. What can we or the mods do about this? Can it be stopped or is it just something we have to live with?

IFM - Ignore, Flag and Move on is the community policy for these spambot and general spammer attacks. It's also known affectionately as the Ian Fleming Manoeuvre. It works.

I imagine that little else can be done but I'll leave that to the mods and admins to confirm.

@Dragonpol, indeed, little more can be done.

Unless you vote Dimi for president. Fifteen years in the salt mines for all spammers. And Donald Trump.

Excess spam can be fed to non-violent drug offenders as a form of punishment instead of sending them to jail.

As has been stated, IFM is the best protocol to follow. Helps us out, and it's always a joy seeing you lot bite your tongues and not post in threads you know will be immediately closed. ;)

Also, the mod team accepts all donations. We need to pay for @Creasy47's indecent exposure law suits.

We're also thinking about merchandising. Who wants to wear DarthDimi undies? :D

Any and all contributions will help, just acquire one of the mod's Paypal e-mails and we'll go from there!

I'll wear those undies, Dimi, but that means I have to take off this pair of @Benny undies I've had on for the last four months in a row...he won't be too happy.

Is there not a way to make new user registration more rigorous, so that these spambots don't get through it?

I have admit though to often finding the spammers' absurdly twisted English quite amusing...

"Very extra pharmaceuticels all needed cheaply now", etc :P

This thing about spammers, is not just applicable to this site, but to a large percentage of forums on the internet. It just seems to be something we all dislike, but the only way to get around it, is to ignore them.

Sadly, yes, the best thing to do is ignore them and flag them. We've wondered in the past if there was some sort of system we could implement where mods have to essentially write off on the very first post a new user has, so that way, we could immediately remove spam and ban spammers before they even make it to the forums.

Speaking of psycho, apart from the spam being a pain for the mods who have to clean it up daily, at least it's pretty harmless and easy to ignore by the members. What is horrible is the nuts who have ruined the movie boards on IMDb. The "M dies" subject lines when Skyfall just opened, and the same type of spoiler lunacy on the Star Wars and other movie boards always posted in the subject lines where it can't be ignored have wrecked those boards . They also seem to have less and less positive back and forth postings, as it seems most of the subject posts are "this is the worst film every made" type of junk. I don't know if things have just gotten a lot worse on IMDb, or what, but those boards are no fun these days.

Track the spammers, and send them back this :

As for Spoilers (or "Ruiners", as Peter David called them), all they deserve is to be hung, drawn and quartered.

At a local theatre here someone shouted out a big spoiler just before the new Star Wars movie started, and when it was over and peeps were leaving a couple of pissed off fans roughed him up some. The police arrived quickly and asked what the reason was for bloodying this fellow's nose was, and when they were told they just told everyone to go home. Justifiable beating.

I almost flagged this thread because I misread the title, thinking it said...
What can be done about the absurd amount of sperm?

Thank goodness those spambots haven't gotten that bad yet. =))
