Moore was 45 in LALD, how long did EON expect him/Bond to last?

So Roger Moore was 45 in Live And Let Die and that got me thinking, why hire someone older than Connery in on ongoing film series? Did EON not expect Bond to last with Moore and for the series to end (as many thought it would), or perhaps they only wanted him to do a few films. What do you think?
