    Robert Shaw would have made an excellent James Bond as well as Sean Bean. Such other wordly opportunities manifested itself in the firm of Craig getting the role and what do you know, with Craig in the saddle the Bond series is in the best shape its been in since Bond mania and is one of the most anticipated movies of the year and facilitated the rebirth of the cinematic spy craze.

    Hard to say. It seems the films only ever go in one direction with each tenure, so I don't think they've particularly learned from that, or perhaps they have, in a sense that they've guided their way through it for 50 years and know they can do it again when the time comes. They mixed it up with CR, but the fans clamour for more and more of the old and rejoice when the DB5 returns, so it's hard to shoulder EON with all of the blame.

    They haven't been able to deftly handle the tropes as well as they did during Connery's and Moore's run imho. In both those actor's runs, they did a pretty good job of pushing it and then dialing it back. They controlled their desire to go to excess better than they have done more recently and the tropes seemed more integrated then. They appear more 'tacked on' these days (even before Craig came along).

    I'm curious to see how Mendes handles SP. It's all about the balance.

    I think they have a better idea of how to do it now (the changeover from Cubby had teething pains when things went to pot) but it still feels a little tacked on (Aston) and it's more difficult to incorporate the tropes so easily with the current relatively serious /mature approach. When they recast will be the real test, in terms of the direction that they take and how they handle it.
