@DaltonCraig007 Is it 'Ok Connery'? It was retitled 'Operation Kid Brother' in the United States.

Sorry for the double post, but yes, it was Neil Connery who played him. Maxwell and Lee were in it, as well.

Anyone else with ideas on what slight ways they would change Bond?

I don't know If this has been said but I'll go ahead and mention it anyway. I miss in the old Bond films how Bond is always doing some extravagant thing(cards/with a beautiful woman) and has to leave to get briefed by M. I would like to see that in Bond 23. Bond maybe winning big at the gambling tables, driving for the love of it, or treating a woman. CR starts off the entire mission for Bond and the action never stops for two films. There was never a need for Bond to be briefed in QoS. The enemy was constant. So with this fresh start in Bond 23 I'm hoping 007 gets called in while galavanting and we get a classic briefing to follow it. It would be a fun start to the film and give big fan service to us.

It would be very fun if they did something like that again; just one of the things I miss about the older Bond films. Just ANYTHING aside from the mission would work for me, especially him bedding a woman or doing something completely unrrelated to the inevitable mission.

Yes, exactly. Craig's Bond has never really been seen relaxing BEFORE a mission. In CR he goes from Madagascar to Nassua to Miami and eventually to Montenegro. He only relaxes in Venice when he thinks the mission is over. Then in QoS he goes from White's to Siena to Haiti to Bregenz to Bolivia and literally never relaxes once. Every man needs to relax, even Bond.

Like I said earlier, QoS felt more like a switch between action pieces, with no real relaxation involved. I just wouldn't mind an excellent PTS, followed by Bond doing ANYTHING unrelated to his mission.
  • The one thing that I NEVER want to see again is Bond smoking cigarettes.

Not only does it not make sense for Craig's Bond but there really is something to be said for how role models affect kids. Every young guy wants to be Bond when they grow up. Period. No kid is going to see a Bond film and say "Oh, cool, he shot that guy - when I grow up I'm going to kill people!". But if they see Bond smoking then yes, that is something that they would possibly imitate.

There was a wonderful, wonderful, heartfelt and heartbreaking post on alt.fan.james-bond by a member who became a smoker because the heroes who did it in films looked cool - but Bond influenced that decision more than anyone. As he said, he might not have had the looks or presence of Bond but smoking was a way that he felt like he could be closer to the character. Fast forward 20 years later and he wasn't able to kick the habit and was filled with regret over what he had done to himself.

I watched two friends die of lung cancer over the last five years (one was only 46) and dying from lung cancer is even worse than I would have thought - and I thought it was pretty bad. They spent months (which they said felt like years) in utter agony and there wasn't a single situation they were in, no matter how stressful, where the cigarette they smoked was worth what they went through in the end. They would have given anything - literally ANYTHING - to feel for even one minute the way we do (and take for granted) all the time. Yet when we smoke we are trying intentionally to feel the way that they did in the end.

I also tried smoking when I was younger because, sadly, I thought it would make me look cool like Timothy Dalton (the Bond at the time). But girls weren't impressed and I gave it up after two weeks. Here's the thing - Timothy Dalton was cool because he was Timothy Dalton, not because he smoked. Just like how Craig and Brosnan were cool even though they didn't smoke. What I learned is that if I wasn't cool (which I wasn't at that age!) smoking wouldn't magically make me cool. It comes from the inside, not some outside affectation.

Very interesting reply. It's weird with me: I'll be honest, I do it partially because film characters do it, and partly because I enjoy it. I could probably stop doing it tomorrow, but I don't, for some reason. I know I will regret it the day it really starts to hit me, but for now, I just don't stop.

I agree with you @thelordflasheart. I have vowed to never indulge in smoking, drinking, or any other vices that will cause me harm later in life. It is shocking how much of a hold the tobacco industry has on this world. Your story is one of thousands. I'm sorry to hear about your rough time, but appreciate your excellent post. It's not hard to see that it came from your heart.

I think smoking is one of the most difficult habits to quit. I just happened to help several friends including my husband to stop. However, at the end, a person will stop whenever he's ready.

That's what makes me wonder, Cat: when might I stop? Might I never? Might it be a week from now? Might it be twenty or thirty years from now when it won't really make that much of a difference? I know quitting at any point helps, I just know I'll regret it later in life, yet I'm not regretting it enough to stop.

So I see many people don't agree with Bond smoking again, what else?

Since you're not regretting it enough to stop, then you're not ready. To some people, it takes a REAL turning point in order to be ready.

It really doesn't bother me if Bond smokes; just as long as he doesn't do it during love scenes, foot chase and fight scenes. In other words, incessant smoking. ;-)

Haha. Instantly made me think of Bond bedding a woman and lighting a cigarette while in the middle of sex, or chasing Mitchell through the sewers of Italy again, lighting a smoke as he falls from the belltower later on.

:-D :-D HaHa, I was thinking what if after all the fights, torture, car crashes, foot chases, death defying stunts and assassination attempts, Bond actually dies from smoking........................... :-?

No, not the slightest bit true. Bond will die of a heart attack when he sees all the child insurance he has to pay for all his illegitimate children.

Possibly, but some gorgeous Bond Girl will resuscitate him again using that 'portable defribillator'. Then, he'll be ready to romance the next Bond Girl.

I think Bond has plenty enough cash plus connections ('M' & the MI6) to take care of his Love Babies.

    :-?

Craig, at the baccarat-table, playing against a not-unattractive woman, get's called away by a man of the casino, saying there's a message for him. Next shot, simple but Elegant Bond-theme as Craig drives his Bahamas-won DB5 into the parking spot at MI6 ( In the style of Brozzer arriving in TND). Then, he opens the WOODEN door into M's office section and is greeted by the tight-skirted behind of our Miss "Naomi" Moneypenny...

I think that wouldn't give mutch complaints, now would it?

    How would I change Bond?

    Sean Connery 50%
    Pierce Brosnan 30%
Daniel Craig 10% (only his fight skills)
    Roger Moore 10% (being comedy)

@thelordflasheart But Bond ISN'T a role model... And we are living in a day and age where smoking is terribly looked down upon... So I don't think that if Bond smokes a couple of cigarettes in the next one, millions of kiids will start smoking too. IMO, Bond HAS to smoke again. Bond isn't Bond without his cigarette.

It's weird how forty, fifty, sixty years ago, smoking was something EVERYONE did. It wasn't frowned upon, it was a social thing. I think Bond will always be a role model to people. He's been my role model for a long time, ever since I first popped GE in my VCR.

Creasy is right. When Bond was first created smoking was the norm. In fact I think u were in the minority if u didn't smoke, it was fashionable. James Bond lit up a cigarette on every other page in the books. I don't buy that this was to show how "brooding" Bond was. It was more to show his indulgent lifestyle - at least at first. However times have changed.

The fact that Pierce and Daniel haven't lit up doesnt really bother me being a non smoker. They still seem to like their cars, their gambling and their women.

I won't be heartbroken if Bond never smoked again, but I would love it if he did. Bring back the old Bond - just for a film, even - and let him smoke.

With all the anti-smoking associations, adverts, warnings there is, I don't think Bond lighting a cigarette will make the smoking rate go up 50%... Bond smoking is harmless today - with this PC-comformist world and education, it won't be a couple of cigarette that will change anything. It is ridiculous to assume that in 2012, if Bond smokes a cig, millions of kids who will see the film will suddenly start smoking aswell...

Actually, come to think of it, Pierce DID smoke - in Die Another Day :p

That he did, that fat ol' cigar.

And DaltonCraig007, I couldn't agree more. If your friends or parents or colleagues or lover smokes, and you don't, then I doubt a film will change your entire perspective on it.
