On to our last full length novel,

The Man With The Golden Gun, 1965

    1. Style – 6 (poor Fleming; lacking his usual descriptive pace and flair.)
    2. Pace - 6
    3. Villains - 7
    4. Heroine - 7
    5. Supporting Characters – 6 (M is particularly cold, but, apart from Leiter, just the usual hackneyed gangsters)

    7. Intrigue - 5
    8. Romance -6
    9. Benign Bizarre - 6
    10. Bond - 9

    1. Style – 8 (the only Fleming novel in which his descriptive powers were not at their peak)
    2. Pace - 8
    3. Villains - 8
    4. Heroine - 6
    5. Supporting Characters – 9 (Tiffy was very nice, and the hoodlums in this one were much better than in Goldfinger)
    6. Action – 8
    7. Intrigue - 7 (Bond in the belly of the beast, wondering how long his cover will hold--similar to OHMSS in that regard, but not quite as good)
    8. Romance -5
    9. Benign Bizarre - 7
    10. Bond - 10

this books ends the SPECTRE series with a 007 reborn who rises from the ashes of self destruction after having lost so much. The last paragraph Bond recognizes who he is and what has been. Too bad Fleming never got to tell a new Bond story...

I must confess I have a soft spot for TMWTGG. Though it could have perhaps benefited from a bit of editing by Fleming, it has a couple of really intense moments to offer! I'm always nail biting my way through the final few chapters.

    Hence:

The Man With The Golden Gun, 1965

    1. Style – 9
    2. Pace - 9 (Pauses when needed but overall moves like a train.)
    3. Villains - 9
    4. Heroine - 8 (I fell in love with Mary when I first read this book.)
    5. Supporting Characters – 8 (the women in the brother, the other gangsters, ... Perhaps not necessarily 'characters' but interesting people nonetheless.)
    6. Action – 9
    7. Intrigue - 9 (sweat on my forehead when Bond walks into M's office!)
    8. Romance -7 (okay, the girl will make feminists angry but I like this thing that she and Bond have.)
    9. Benign Bizarre - 7
    10. Bond - 10 (Bond has a genuine arc in this book.)

    Yes, that seems about right.

    As always -

What do you think of The Man With The Golden Gun?

Flashes of Fleming genius. The swamp climax is always a highlight.

What do you think of it's cinematic adaptation?

Chris Lee is the better Scaramanga. But other than that.

Is the community score higher or lower than your own?

    Considerably higher.

And finally, what are your reactions, post game, and does it differ from your own personal rankings?

Very surprised that CR was mired down in the lower half. Top three bang on. Then probably, CR, LALD and DN, followed by MR. TB and GF are interchangeable. With DAF and GG in the bottom two.

    Reactions are always welcomed!!

I'm overall surprised - or perhaps not - that the novels got so much more praise, on average, than the movies. I'm actually loving the fact that Fleming still commands so much community respect! :-)

And like before, great thread, @royale65! I'm really looking forward to what you have in store for us next... Maybe you can find a Bond music score 'rate' thread? I'm sure the scores too can be broken down into 10 categories. ;-)

Anyway, thanks for hosting another cool thread. :-)

    sorry i'm a bit late:

The Man With The Golden Gun, 1965

    1. Style – 8 Still it's Fleming, allthough perhaps a tad tired? Anyway, I found it, again, fascinating reading.

    2. Pace - 10 It starts off tense enough. Has M ever been this harsh before? Anyway, we'll get to that later. Bond is off to Nassau, and as we pick him up, he's been chasing mister S for quite some time. And as soon as they meet, the tension is back. Could it have been done better? perhaps, but I don't see how.

    3. Villains - 9 Mister Scaramanga. He's as bullyingly annoying as you can imagine. And as dangerous as they come. He's only a bit full of himself, which leads to his downfall.

    4. Heroine - 7 Well that would be the lovely Mary. Oddly enough, allthough she's dressed in pink, i find her not that interesting. Yes, she's gorgious, but she isn't really that endearing. But that might again just be me, beeing a romantic. But with predecessors like Honey and Tiffany, well, she's just a bit Bland.

    5. Supporting Characters 10 – Artificial (Tiffy), (are you noting @Khaners? she's got a pink skirt on iirc) is lovely and well teethe- eh, fleshed out. M is as harsh as we've ever seen him. Is that guilt? It's the first time I actually thought he'd made a mistake. he shouldn't have let Bond in like he did. The friendly granite that is Mr. Hendriks? As Dutch as Bond himself, he's sure impressive. And then there's Leiter again! how lovely to see that friendly face!

    6. Action – 8 It may not be much, but there's continually so much tension, and the fight on the train and then in the marsh is so gripping it deserves some extra points.

    7. Intrigue - 9 First there's Bond on a mission from the other side, then there's him beeing Mark Hazard working for his target. I

    8. Romance -6 As I've said before, I'm afraid Mary just is too much of an English rose to be really interesting, dispite her risk taking to get to Bond. But that was out of a sense of duty.

    9. Benign Bizarre - 6 Well Scaramanga's back story is odd enough, but that's about it.

    10. Bond - 9 Bond. Bond does recuperate quite easily from all those electric shocks. He returns to his healthy, undamaged self a bit too easy. Still, his inner battle as to where and when to kill Scaramanga is interesting enough. But the execution was a bit too much, too gentleman for Bond, imo, of course.

    92%.

    not bad, really.

    And, topping it up:

What do you think of The Man With The Golden Gun?

It's a far better story then I remember. I really got into the atmosphere. From the Nassau airport, to 3 1/2 love lane, it's tense, exciting, and even better, I don't agree with the choices Bond makes when it's about killing Scaramanga, but it does make for fascinating reading.

What do you think of it's cinematic adaptation?

The adaptation is, dispite Christopher Lee's interesting and well-played impersonation, far away from the atmosphere of the book. Scaramanga in the novel is far more of a thug. And of course, the whole solar agitator story isn't done well. Actually, the film is pretty bad except for the great cinematography, Nick Nack and the chemestry between Roger Moore and Lee.

Is the community score higher or lower than your own?

The community score is substantially lower, and I haven't really got a clue why. Perhaps the book isn't as 'grand'as other stories. Perhaps Scaramanga does operate in a 'small pond', but he's menacing enough.

And finally, what are your reactions, post game, and does it differ from your own personal rankings?

Well, my ranking is as follows:

    OHMSS:97
    YOLT: 92
    DN:92
    TMWTGG:92
    FRWL:88
    TB: 87
    FRWL:86
    CR:83
    TSWLM:83
    LALD:76
    GF: 69
    MR:68
    DAF:66

    compared to

    On Her Majesty's Secret Service, 1963 – 96.14%
    From Russia With Love, 1957 – 92.71%
    You Only Live Twice, 1964 – 88.62%
    Dr No, 1958 – 87.87%
    Thunderball - 87.37%
    Moonraker, 1955 - 85.66 %
    Live and Let Die, 1954 – 83.44%
    Casino Royale, 1953 – 83.3%
The Spy Who Loved Me, 1962 – 79.37%
    Goldfinger, 1959 – 77.33%%
The Man With The Golden Gun, 1965 – 76.42%
    Diamonds Are Forever, 1956 – 72%

interestingly, except for the actual numbers given, the ranking is rather similar. Except for the last one, TMWTGG.
So, not much to say there.

It was a fascinating game, absolutely! and great that the novels did get their time in the spotlight, where they nowedays get little attention compared to the films.

I thought we'd do the stories one by one, not as a book. I think short stories, allthough published together, have little in common. My scoring will be accordingly:

From A View To A Kill

    1. Style – 9 gripping as can be. very tense.
    2. Pace - 8 Somehow it keeps on going at a normal pace, whilst still telling all there is to tell.
    3. Villains - 6 Obviously here the story ends up 'short'. Still, the dispatch driver is ruthless, and so are his accomplices.
    4. Heroine -7 Marie-Ann Russel is Bond's dream come true. sort of literaly. I like her introduction, her driving, and the joy she brings.
    5. Supporting Characters – 8 Colonel Schreiber may not be on Bond's side, but certainly represents a certain part of politics.
    6. Action – 8 for a short story, there's a very tense climax!
    7. Intrigue - 9 A dispatch driver killed by an impostor, hiding in the woods..
    8. Romance -6 Well there's not much happening, only hints of fantasy.
    9. Benign Bizarre – 7 It may not seem so bizarre, but the rose bush with periscope. the walking on 'grass boots'. It's all very much possible, but odd at the very least.
    10. Bond – 9 Bored as he is, irritated by bureaucracy, but very much the professional in his sniffing things out, even by putting his life on the line. well done Bond!

    77%

    For Your Eyes Only

    1. Style – 10 one increadably gripping story.
    2. Pace - 9 nothing to complain about here.
    3. Villains - 9 The thugs killing the Havelocks. Man, if there ever was a reason to go after people like that it's such killings.
    4. Heroine - 8 Judy's one feisty lady.
    5. Supporting Characters – 9 them Canadians are very nice people for sure!
    6. Action – 7 Perhaps not so much, but it's very tense as the story works up to this climax.
    7. Intrigue - 6 well, just going under cover for a kill is perhaps not too much intrigue.
    8. Romance -6 iirc not much happening there either.
    9. Benign Bizarre – 6 a veangefull daughter with a crossbow may seem not so bizarre right now, but I think it was pretty exotic when it was written.
    10. Bond – 9 not much to add to that number.

    79%

    Quantum of Solace

    1. Style – 10 I just love the storytelling here. This story is highly underrated.
    2. Pace – 9 very good storytelling.
    3. Villains – 0 well, it's kind of hard to point the villain out here. Both are sort of evil.
    4. Heroine - 7 the leading lady may not be a love interest for Bond, but she's a very interesting character.
    5. Supporting Characters – 9 I find all very interesting people.
    6. Action – 0 Not much that I can remember, not counting the psychological warfare, which was highly intense.
    7. Intrigue - 10 and I'll put the psychological warfare here.
    8. Romance -9 Well it all starts out nice enough, right?
    9. Benign Bizarre – 0. Not a thing.
    10. Bond – 9 Bond sure learns a lesson here, allthough he's just a figurine in this story.
