Do be careful with that, though, as 4KTVs really do demand the right size to get the proper experience. I was doing research to ensure I didn't jump into the game too early with a bad TV, and was told numerous times that anything below 50"-55" is not ideal for a 4KTV purchase, has something to do with the quality differences not being as apparent with smaller TV's. Thankfully, though, by the time you and others jump to the format in a few years, if ever, the prices will be infinitely more manageable.

I say keep all the grain. It's part of the image. And I always thought it looked really cool.
As far as I remember, I wasn´t bothered that much by the faces in Predator, but by the way the perception of Depth was changed through the DNR process. People seemed more in front of the Picture than in the Picture.

Didn't know that, @Creasy47 – that's definitely something to keep in mind when looking at a new TV. Thanks!
Will need a bit of effort to make enough room for a TV of that size though. I prefer a TV stand/console to wall mounting.

The 4K versions on Itunes are staggering. Especially the ones from Dr.No to MR. Can't wait for the physical editions with higher bitrate.

From what I've been told, the scene when Quist is feed to the sharks in Largos pool, the water turns red in the 4K iTunes version. Can you confirm this?

The red filter was removed on the Ultimate DVD & Blu-Ray versions.

I have the red filter on both Blu-Ray Boxed set discs that I bought. So one of us purchased some anomalies.

As far as I know, it's the UK edition that removed the red filter.

Funny that their version is more censored, but the UK edition of CR is much more "unrated".

I watched most of the Casino Royale version on Netflix that's supposed to be the UK version and I didn't see a difference from the USA version.

Then it wasn't the UK version, which adds a few extra moments of violence in the opening PTS fight between Bond and Fisher, and the stairwell fight between Bond, Obanno and his lieutenant. I can't say any other scenes stuck out as new to me, just watched it the other day, but I might have looked away or overlooked them entirely.

No, I don't watch any Bond titles via streaming because I own them all on blu-ray. I live in the US and I got the region free blu-ray from the UK, exclusively because it's more "uncut."

Your profile says you live in the US, so there's no way they'd be playing the UK cut on the US version of Netflix.

If/when they release the Bond films on 4K, do you think we will see a significant improvement to certain films like Goldeneye which never looked that great on Bluray, at least in comparison to others?

Just completed my blu-ray set with SP and NSNA. Not the finest entries, but Bond films nevertheless.

Roger Deakins discussed the upcoming SF 4K release briefly in a forum post, noting he made a new blu-ray timing of the film in London recently. The Craig films (or at least a 4K Craig era boxset) seem confirmed for a September release:

    https://www.rogerdeakins.com/post-the-di/upcoming-skyfall-2012-4k-blu-ray-release-hdr-ap/

French websites have the pre-order up for late September, and North America's earlier rumored release is September 10th. Hopefully we get an official confirmation soon (and it's not only the Craig films releasing).

As I understand it, the current 4K download/streaming version fixes GoldenEye's DNR issues.

From the looks of it yeah.

I actually have purchased all the 4K iTunes versions, so if anyone has any questions about the new transfers feel free to shoot me a question.

For example, in AVTAK after Bond tucks Stacey in bed we cut to the next morning. It starts with a shot of Stacey’s house. Just as an earthquake is happening, the frame of the image shakes to give a tremor effect. For the UE, Lowry made a mistake in stabilizing the image so the house appears static without a tremor effect. For the 4K transfer that tremor effect has been properly restored. Also the heavy cropping of the PTS has been fixed.

Mind you, these screencaps were scaled down, my only point is to illustrate the difference in cropping between Lowry's remaster and the newer 4K master. I have no idea if this site still bans hosting images of EON copyright photos, so I'm just presenting them as links unless a mod says it's okay to host images.

A number of the titles sequences were distorted in the Bond 50 Blu-ray set - e.g. In Moonraker's the moon should be round and circular but is more oval due to this, do these 4k transfers correct that?

I assume you’re referring to the picture boxing implemented on some of the blu-rays? That doesn’t appear to happen in MR or TSWLM.

Were there any other title sequences picture boxed? Those were the only two I remember.

Think TWINE was too. Thunderball as well, although the image doesn't seem distorted from what I remember on TB.

Huh, never noticed that on TWINE, but then again I think I've only watched the blu-ray like once from the Bond 50 set. Anyway, I checked out both TB and TWINE and there appears to be no picture boxing involved with the title sequences.

Here's an easy way to know you're watching the 4K version. All films except TWINE, CR, and QOS have had the MGM logo replaced with the current version that debuted with SF, zooming out of the lion's eye.

The odd thing about TWINE is that it now retains its original 75th anniversary logo, which hasn't been seen since the original 2000 DVD. I assume the 4K transfer is based off of a theatrical print. Both CR and QOS retain their original theatrical logos, naturally.

Also, the CR that's now available through iTunes US is the uncut version that's been mentioned several times in the last few pages. This is the first time that the uncut version is available for purchase in the US. I would bet my money that by the time the physical discs are available it will be the uncut version used. I assume we're only getting it now because the original uncut print was used as the basis for the 4K transfer. Sounds kind of similar to how the Lowry used the original uncut version of LTK for its remaster.

In my opinion it's very strange that TB and OHMSS have had fully frame by frame restorations by Lowry removing al the frame-damage. But on the BOND50 blu-ray set they used an diferent master with all of the damage intact. Examples: beach scenes in Thunderball, vertical white lines in OHMSS (for example, the Casino scene). Lowry scanned the films in 4K, why not release these Lowry remasters?

Lowry really messed up on some of the remasters. I’ll take the print damage of OHMSS over the bad color grading that made Lazenby look like a smurf in the PTS.

Just took delivery of my UHD player today, no 4K discs as yet, that will change soon enough. The Dark Knight Trilogy looks a strong possibility.

I've got the Bond 50 set anyway so I can't see myself upgrading the lot again, although exceptions like OHMSS will definitely get an upgrade and no doubt the DC era, although I might begrudge shelling out on SPECTRE again, the BR cost me £4.

Can't go wrong with TDK trilogy, both Blade Runner titles, Mad Max: Fury Road or the John Wick titles. They all look stunning.

They’re actually the best they’ve ever looked on home media. TSWLM on blu was especially an improvement, as previous home videos applied a lot of awful edge enhancement due to wanting to “sharpen” the image. I suspect that was done because the image is inherently soft due to the filmmakers using diffusion filter, as that was popular in the 70s as seen in Donner’s SUPERMAN and certain scenes in STAR WARS (which Lucas also tried to sharpen on his DVD and blus by sharpening the image with edge enhancement).

Thanks @Creasy47, both Blade Runner's are definitely on my list and Fury Road, I also noticed one of my Wife and I's favourites greatly benefits from 4K Close Encounters, looks night and day from the screen shots I've seen.

I'm selling off my Region A Criterion's to finance some upgrades as well as my chipped BR player.

Had to make the decision on this, buying a chipped UHD player is not cheap and I got this half price, so I'll replace Criterion ones with the titles now available on the UK collection and the likes of Rosemary's Baby I'll just buy the UK as the transfer is no different to the U.S Criterion.

I've had to let The Game, Following, Hunger & Short Cuts go for the time being until UK releases available but cest la vie.

Also Lionsgate's 10th Anniversary Memento (my fave Nolan), although it's the 20th Anniversary next year, so think Nolan will have a 4K out for that.

The Prestige also looks like a considerable upgrade and that is my 2nd fave Nolan so another definite. Thought about the Nolan 4K set possibly, I'll see depending on the profits from my sales.

The good thing about 4K Blu-ray is they haven't locked regions yet.

I see Indiana Jones is on the horizon, Jaws which is my favourite film would be a must-buy.

Waiting for NTTD to hit home market is going to be incredibly exciting now I've joined the 4K club.

I remember when I went from DVD to Blu ray back 2009 and how exciting that was, although I know some are more subtle than others. I'm definitely seeing from the evidence that 4K Blu-ray is far from a scam.

I even still hear some saying DVD is no different to Blu-ray, oh how I laugh.

@Shardlake, you're very welcome. Funny about the Criterions, I actually just started collecting them again since the turn of 2019. Think I went a bit overboard and bought a bit too many, and I go back and forth between obsessively watching new Criterions/the ones I own and not touching them for weeks, so I'm going to try and (hopefully) avoid inevitably selling them off in uncertainty again.

The Prestige is another one I keep forgetting about in terms of 4K - I nearly bought that entire Nolan set but there were a couple titles I didn't necessarily need to own. My 4K purchases now are solely films I love that I know I will return to time and time again; I've tried to avoid superfluous purchases that'll get a one time watch and nothing more. My collection's too much anymore.

Yes, I believe DVD sales still outpace those of blu-ray/4K. Some/most just don't care about video/audio quality differences in the slightest, it would seem.

Reading these comments mentioning the lack of image quality on DVD's make me feel bad for still opting for DVD's 9/10 times when I buy films!

Never really jumped on the Blu-ray train, and I'm still on the fence about going down the route of buying brand new equipment for 4K, even though I'm a big film fan.
