There is a bit of a guilty pleasure feel for DAD I'll have to admit.

I must say I enjoy the daring approach the writers took towards DAD. It was bold of them to try to make a Moonraker for the 2000's. It's a bit sci-fi and Bond is a super-hero.
I like all the "ideas" in the film:
-North Korea: a modern political theme
-Torture Scene: Something we had not seen to such a degree in a Bond film
-Cuba: a nice throwback to '60's Bond
-Jinx: actually could have been a decent character--they needed a lesser known actress and got rid of the "Yo Mama" line--she has a big role to play and would have been a good side-kick to Bond
-Invisisible car: why not? If the whole film is going to be over-the-top fun I can go along with it
-John Cleese: As others said, he was the next closest thing to Desmond. He's buffoonish in TWINE, but in DAD he comes across serious and very convincing as Q
    -Fencing: Real action scene--nice!
-Iceland/Ice Palace: Great location, Iceland is beautiful, though they could have done more with the Ice Palace, but still very imaginitive.
-Car chase: pretty exciting stuff, I always like me a good ice chase like in TLD

The PROBLEM: the execution. Lee Tamahori was not able to translate all the interesting ideas on-screen. For example, the glacial surfing scene actually could have been quite impressive, if they spent more time filming some actual stunt shots and close-ups of Bond to build the tension. Also, the actors, especially Toby Stephens and Rick Yune are so obnoxiously unlikeable. The great thing about Bond villains, is that despite their evil, they are still fun and enjoyable to watch on screen: just think Dr. No or Auric or Scaramanga. Not so in DAD (Dominic Greene also was a BAD viallain because he was obnoxious)

...But I do have fun with the crazy, over-the-top ideas of the film. There is a lot of color in the film. Certainly not one of my favorites, but it's at least maybe a little more entertaining in it's approach than TND and TWINE, but that's it.

Die Another Day is like Batman and Robin (only without the batcredit card and closeups of Clooney and O Donnell's Cod Pieces or Butt Shots)

Its one of those films where people hate yet secretly they find it hilarious and enjoyable

What they did with the idea is the problem.

The film could have been about him searching for the traitor while being hunted by MI6 and other agencies. It should have ended with Bond killing him/her (it does not necessarily have to be Frost).

    Great potential, missed opportunity.
Absolutely. I've said it so many times before. The entire Brosnan era was a missed opportunity.
    Except GoldenEye.

I don't want to balloon these Die Another Day rounds but incidentally I was reading a film critics report on 'The Top Ten worst Bond releases' a short time ago, lo and behold this here release came in at first place, and what was said was not really readable for a family forum, He certainly wasn't impressed, as are most, and hands up most will be honest enough to say it's a Bond film of tragic proportions. Yes they could of done so much better, reminds me a bit of Diamonds and following on from the Tracy death and the revenge aspect and keeping Lazenby, whereas here as stated another golden opportunity went by the wayside with the Bond capture in Korea, they could of done so much better. Starts off promising enough, but apart from one or two genuine exciting moments and good action parts, it's surely up there as one of the top three most annoying and worst James Bond releases since Dinosaurs. Yes it wasn't all Brosnans fault, but he's not without some level of blame for that mess of a movie

I actually regard DAD as one of the better movies in the series. It´s so OTT and crazy that you gotta love it. The ending on the plane and the prison stuff in the beginning are the only parts I´m not that fond of. The invicible car is great. It´s like a Moore gadget updated. That could be said about the whole movie, actually. It´s a modern version of a Moore Bond (as was TND).

I wouldn't go that far. I enjoyed more or less all of it up until the end of DAD (it was all going so well, then we had an invisible car and a stupid giant laser)

I'm not saying it's a shit, because I like every single bond movie, but I think it's the worst bond film with Moonraker. the only parts I thought that were good enough as for a Bond film and not a science fiction film are: the begining, in North Korea, including the torture scene, the fencing scene and, of course, every scene in wich Dame Judi Dench apeared.
The cgi with the bullet thing in the gun-barrel, the invisible car, the laser thing, the cuba scenes, the DNA therapy... were absurd and idiotic just as Jaws falling in love, talking and then SAVING Bond in Moonraker.
the problem they had is that as it was the 20th bond movie in the 40th aniversary, they thought too much in the tributes to the series and not enough in making a good plot.

I will quite happily say it is shit.

it is very very very bad movie. A film that carries on self-destructing you wonder whats left after all its continuous implosians.

Lets get this straight who said "the start in North Korea" was original and fresh and there were so many good ideas. The Brosnan era is littered with ideas which fall in execution - the one man machine gun battle in TND, Renards immunity to pain in TWINE. DAD has so many ideas that go tits up there is a wonder there is a film there at all.

Brosnan is not a man to do a hard thriller - thats Craig or Daltons territory. He is an attractive man gallivanting around the world spouting crap oneliners with a smirk. Thats him. Thats his Bond. That's what he is good at.

Therefore the entire script is tailored towards that. The entire script tries to be a seventies fantastical adventure but the old lags who used to specialise in that have long gone. Therefore we are left at the tender mercies of Tamahori, Purvis and Wade etc.

Not only the worse Bond but a warning to film producers all over the world that Lee Tamahori should come with a health warning.

Die Another Day is awesome, The PTS is Brilliant, the whole movie is Brilliant. It was the Bond of the Millennium. Brosnan was at his best, he was on top of the glacier. Literally! :D Sure it wasn't "Serious OHMSS Bond" but it was fun! I was 11 when it came out and I still love it to this day.

But in all seriousness, I love every James Bond movie. I have no real hate towards any of them including Die Another Day. The James Bond movies have always been an escape for me.

As soon as I escape the asylum you shall be my first customer @Baltimore_007, I assure you. The only hassle is using spoons and knives to loosen the brickwork. With any luck I will escape in 2 1/2 weeks from now. And if you are wondering how I can get on MI6 in the asylum, just ignore the thought and smile and nod in agreement to my offer. :D

Actually I've gone off the idea now

I merely had a spontaneous moment of Bond disillusionment somewhere down the line tonight

Exactly. Brosnan was ill-prepared to handle the first half of the movie believably.

TWINE, while it has its own faults, feels better tailored to Brosnan's strengths as an actor.

I was about to be 11 too, and still, as I said, I think it's, with Moonraker, the worst Bond movie ever, not the worst movie ever, because I still enjoy it. The PTS and the TS itself with the torture thing was brilliant, but, as said before, it's not enough to counter the things done wrong in the film.

Again, I'm not saying it's a shit, I'm saying it's in my top 22 of the Bond movies...

To be fair, I really hate Titanic.

DAD is a bond film. Thus, I can never hate it. Just intensely dislike it. But I do rewatch it, as I rewatch all the Bond films. I'll say this for it, it's entertaining enough.

Another thing that always amuses me with these villains:

Even though the villain is filled with rage from Bond thwarting their evil plans, they still feel the need to call Bond 'Mister'. What's with this? If I were Goldfinger or Graves or whoever, I'd be swearing at him, calling him all sorts of things not fit for this forum.

It's nowhere near my top 10, or even top 15 and it's taken 10 years, but my feelings towards DAD have softened a bit. I can't quite bring myself to say that it's a Bond film that I like as a whole, but it still has some fairly decent parts such as the PTS* and cuba.

    * That includes the surfing, which I don't really have a problem with. Is it not an appropriate way for the 3 agents to get ashore?
The first surfing scene is fine. In fact I quite like it. It's not as silly as Bond getting to a location via plastic crocodile (love OP but that is quite a silly moment).

I have always wondered how and where did they surfing to the shore ? Did they surf across the entire ocean ? were they parachuted ? dropped from a naval ship ?

I agree with you. I have a paper copy of the DAD PTS story boards, and I wish they would have used more of what was in the story boards, such as the three 00's using mini Submersibles to get to where Moon's men were waiting.

It´s ironic that this movie is universally hated and CR universally loved, when it should be the opposite. If I was in charge I would keep doing movies like this one.
