Breaking Bad/El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019) Discussion

My apologies if there is a better place to put this or if there is an existing thread that I could not find, but I'm a huge fan of this show and seeing as how the final episode has now aired, now seemed like a good time to start a thread.

For me, this show is the epitome of acting, storytelling, and filmmaking to create basically a 60 hour film that only got better as time went on. A true classic that will be missed but ended on top.

I just got through watching the finale. I enjoyed it, but I'm sad to see it go. This ending was was so much better than the way Dexter ended. I really liked Dexter until the last season and I hated the ending. I know shows can't go on and on and on, but I really hate seeing things end. I think that's why I love the Bond Series so much because it never really ends.

@bondbat007, if you think this epitomizes storytelling you should really watch The Wire. That takes the amazingness of BB and turns it up to >9000. Breaking Bad still is absolutely breathtaking from a narrative viewpoint. This show had just barely made my top ten with the first four seasons; I'm tempted to say it's third or even second with the last.

The Dexter finale was the worst episode of televison I've ever - oh wait, I didn't even watch it, I walked out of my living room 45 minutes in. Pathetic.

I am overseas and don't know it - so the finale was a series finale, not just the season? The show has definitely ended? After what, how many years? 5?

I am going to watch The Wire somehow. Breaking Bad, I just don't know yet ...

A really unnecesary thread on a tv show that is over, it should be chucked into a general tv thread as it is in essence a show with no future.

I'm pretty sure there is plenty of threads covering finished tv shows and he did apologize for not knowing were to put this thread so there's no harm discussing the show even if it has finished.

I have no problem if a mod decides to merge this in the general tv thread. It's just that at least where I look, this show is a phenomenon that I thought might merit its own thread. I do need to watch The Wire. But as it's not on Netflix i need to track down some DVDs.

But as for BB, in my option, the journey that was Walter White was something that should be experienced by everybody who loves good acting and storytelling

A masterful ending and Gilligan did it proud, huge congratulations to all concerned, just simply an amazing piece of television, trawling through the excrement that is the last 3 episodes of the woeful Dexter final season tomorrow night is going to seem like a gigantic anti climax.

At least Walking Dead, Justified, Boardwalk and Banshee are all returning or have returned although Hannibal is the one that's got me most excited about continuing.

BB has set the bench mark very high although The Wire remains no. 1 for me still.

  • Fantastic show. Haven't gotten round to watching the finale yet but I'm really looking forward to it. Shame it's ending but at least we have the Saul spin off.

Walter White is one of the greatest characters of all time. I actually don't think becoming Heisenberg changed him that much though and despite him constantly using it to justify what he was doing, I don't think it was ever really just to provide for his family. I think him becoming Heisenberg was about him building up an empire, like he should've done years ago when him and his mate started Gray Matter. Yeah at first he wanted the money to provide for his family but I think part of him wanted it because he was a genius that deserved an empire and lots of money, who thought that the life he was living was beneath him. I think that's the sad truth behind the character: he'd never changed that much at all. He'd always had evil and resentment inside him, it just took becoming a meth kingpin for his dark side to fully reveal itself.

My favourite characters from the show have been Hank, Walt, Saul and Mike.

So what if it's over, we can still discuss it. If they stopped making Bond films tomorrow then should they close this forum down?

I prefer BB personally. The Wire was brilliant though.

I do too. I have a lot of respect for The Wire but I found it very heavy going and sometimes difficult to watch. BB is a bit more accessable IMO though still a mature, well acted drama.

Haven't seen the final yet but am going to watch it tomorrow night.

Answer me this question. One of the main reasons I love BB is because it just seems like one long 60 hour movie. Is The Wire similar?

Well that's what stood out to me. The Wire is 60 episodes and it basically plays out like a novel. Same can be said within that for each of the individual seasons as well.

Just saw the final. Great ending and well done to all involved.
  • I can't think of a time where I've ever been this satisfied with the ending to a TV show. Brilliant finale, perfect ending.
    They finally used the Ricin!

You and I say satisfying, where others use predictable. Although nobody disliked the ending, just because it wasn't a mind blowing episode like some of the others, I keep hearing moans and groans. But I say it was fantastic!

I greatly enjoyed the finale, but I do see the argument for predictable.
I think Walt's character was doomed for death no matter what happened. His cancer had returned, his list of enemies and people after him was ever growing, and he had irreconcilable differences with his wife. I knew he was going to die, but I was glad he did it his way. I really enjoyed the scenes where Walt was in the remote cabin in the middle of nowhere. I wish they had devoted more time to his "disappearance." What a great show though, I will definitely miss it.

I suppose the ending did have a slight whiff of Hollywood about it. How many times
have you heard police cars racing towards the scene with their sirens blazing at the end of a film
. Nonetheless I think it worked and I've played Baby Blue on my Iphone repeatedly since (which I'd forgotten I'd had as part of The Departed soundtrack.

    :'(

Also, its probably just me but the scene where
    Jessie strangles Todd
reminded me of the staircase fight in Casino Royale.

Great finale, but too predictable and "light", not at all as great as episode 14 for instance. But overall, the best TV show I've seen since Lost.

I think I've come to the conclusion that "Ozymandias" was the "finale" and the remaining two episodes were the epilogue. Ozymandias was by far the best episode in the series and I remember being physically nauseous after watching it

The best TV show since Lost? I take it you forgive that lame ass ending, I can't forgive that ending and personally I wouldn't put BB and that lazy series in the same sentence.

Both BB & The Wire new when to end and the ending while predictable was hugely satisfying, the ending of lost was terrible and an example that they had just back themselves into a corner and the only way out was oh yeah they were all in purgatory. I Incidentally that was proposed at the end of the first season on the net but the writers denied it, the truth was they didn't have an end game and it was one of the biggest cop outs in TV history, no I hate that series and that ending undid all the good that might have been done in it's far too long duration.

That being said I loved the hugely controversial cut to black of the Soprano's, I thought that David Chase did the right thing, those expecting Tony to go to jail or go out in a blaze of glory clearly didn't know the series they'd been watching, we were denied the conclusion but T would looking behind his back for the rest of his life, the ending was perfect.

Yep you heard right @shardlake, I've never enjoyed a TV show more than Lost, despite what one might think of the last couple of seasons. It was a true joy from week to week for years. But that's another topic ;)

Maybe I should give The Wire another chance... I saw the pilot episode but wasn't hooked.

Fair enough, I got the same feeling with Lost that I got with the finale of Dexter this week, totally underwhelmed and cheated, guess it was my fault for continuing to watch what had become such a serviceable series.

As for the Wire it does still remain my favourite series but I wasn't hooked immediately, it took a good few episodes into season 1 to grab me, although re-watching Season 1 was a joy, it plays better when you know the characters and whats going on, the mark of a truly great series. Like that I'll be returning to BB once that Blu ray set gets to a reasonable price.
  • I never really enjoyed Lost very much, I lost interest in it fairly quickly. The Wire was brilliant but I think my two favourites shows are Breaking Bad and Life On Mars.

    ;)

Although same here. My friend let me borrow the first series and I too got bored quite quickly. I've always been more of a 24 man. As much as I enjoy that show though it certainly can't compete with BB.
  • Believe it or not, that was actually unintentional :P

I'm in the same boat as you when it comes to 24. I definitely wouldn't call it the best show ever but I enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to it coming back.

I'm not reading any replies on here, but let me state this: if there is ever anything that remotely interests you in terms of a television show, watch it and don't stop. Keep up to date. Had the ending spoiled for me in TWO different locations online yesterday, and I just hit season four of the show. One of the best shows I've ever watched in a long time, and now I know how it ends. So disappointed.
  • Sad that it's over but at least we have more of this to look forward too :D

  • I might be incredibly late, but I just started watching the show on Monday and I'm 5 episodes in (and that's after not watching it from Tuesday to Thursday). It is already very good, and by all appearances it only gets better. I wonder how quickly I'll finish it?

You'll finish is it no time, @soundofthesinners, it's incredibly addictive..
  • I put in three episodes today, and I understand that's by no means remarkable.
