The Technology of MI6

In TWINE we saw MI6 has holographic technology as seen when looking at the trajectory on the bullet in Renard's head.

In Die Another Day we had the full resolution 3D training simulator glasses (granted we also had an invisible car...)

Casino Royale's interface too had it's own kind of interface :

However in Quantum of Solace we saw MI6 had a new proprietary operating system and interface as used one the table and the smart glass in M's office:

When we get to Skyfall, it kind of looks like the operating system used by MI6 is a regression from what we saw in Quantum. In fact, visually it has more in common with what we saw in Casino.

So my question basically is, what's the deal with MI6 and their technology / interfaces? They seem to advance and regress and advance and then regress ... I thought the Quantum of Solace interfaces were rather sophisticated. What do you think prompted the decision to go back to something more terminal based?

Thoughts?

Mod edit - This is clearly not news. Moved to Bond Movies.

An interesting pattern I've pondered myself. Regarding DAD's virtual reality glasses, the invisible car, and TWINE's hologram of Renard- the technology exists today in some form or another, but perhaps not something I'd expect to see in MI6 headquarters within this decade, let alone in 1999/2002. Put simply, DAD's (and to a lesser extent TWINE's) tech got too ahead of itself. Then CR grounded MI6's technology back in reality, which works out when you consider it's set before the Brosnan era. QoS took advantage of current touchscreen technology, and I feel this is as far as they should go until the next latest trend is released for the general public. Regarding the regression of tech in Skyfall, I tend to think that if MI6 hadn't been targeted, we'd see some sort of QoS continuity with the touch screen table and wall-size screens in MI6 headquarters, as opposed to the last minute gathering of less expensive/less technologically advanced equipment for MI6's move to the underground establishment.

It is exactly how I feel about this issue. And considering those were backup/emergency equipments, they were rather good I might say.

That's what I thought aswell until I watched Skyfall again yesterday and noticed that the interface which M uses on her laptop and when she's writing Bond's obituary is the same throughout the movie (i.e even before Silva attacked MI6) which suggests that the QoS interface had been made redundant.

Also regarding the chronology of Casino Royale, I was under the impression that when it rebooted, it rebooted at the time period it was made and thus the technology were not to be considered predecessors to what Brosnan used in his movies, for example the Ericsson flip phone he used to control the car would not be as advanced as say even the (by today's standards) K800i and M600 Sony Ericssons from Casino Royale.

I too believe that the DaD and TWiNE technologies were somewhat scifi-ish and I agree with your point re the QoS interface because it's pretty much already possible, albeit looks much cooler on the screen. I liked the concept behind it being designed to allow agents in the field and at HQ to sift through alot of data visually and quickly - in comparison to Skyfall's more dense terminal-looking operating OS.

Well, technology wise, Q put it very simple when admiting they don't do explosive pens anymore.

Very true, but gadget / technology wise I think the palm print coded gun was a great idea and should really be standard issue. But for forthcoming movies do you think we should see gadgets he had before again like the laser watch or the car remote control (which was in both TND and DAD) or something new and clever rather that outlandish?

I enjoy multi-use gadgets, as opposed to gadgets that stand out in a situation and make a forthcoming event easily predictable, such as the palm-reading PPK. Don't get me wrong, I loved the idea, but it's just a "Oh, someone is going to take his gun at some point, try to use it against him, and fail."

    There is no continuity.

I'm not an expert in technology but as I see it the new gadgets in many cases perform the same functions of older ones but from a smaller size. For example, computers have more memory and capacity and now are of a little book size and not a whole room. The same of other devices.
So we can have an older idea in a new format.

Especially with the talk of holographic hard drives in future computers.
