In my heart the show ended when Capaldi regenerated, I hope the show returns and changes my opinion one day.

Yep, thats about right, time to give it a rest IMO.

Promising new characters underutilised, promising stories under developed, recycled plot points, and direct sequels, spending to much time revisiting its own past.

Tennant comes back, now Piper may come back... if they manage to bring back William Hartnell, then I'll really be inpressed

Take a few years off, then revive it with new blood and fresh ideas
Dr Who is such a great concept it will always rise from the ashes and live again

Apropos of nothing, I've been watching some episodes of an old 1970s Spy series call "Department S". IMO Peter Wyngarde might have made a good Dr Who back in the day?

Jason King actor Peter Wyngarde would have been a great choice as The Doctor. I recently bought season's 4. 5 and 6 of The Avengers on Blu-ray, Peter Wyngarde appears there also as a villain, Wyngarde would have also made a great Master IMO.

Doctor Who Is “As Dead as We’ve Ever Known It”, Says “Dalek” Writer Robert Shearman

I think it's all but confirmed the show is going away again. When even RTD doesn't know what's going on, not even giving fans a bit of hope, it's not good.

A long hiatus is probably for the best, Billy Piper's image at the end of the last episode seems to get worse by the day. I wish it would have just ended by cutting to black and we did not know who the next Doctor was.

God RTD really did destroy the show, its such a mess with all the bi-regeneration nonsense etc. Why didn't the Doctor bi-regenerate at the end of the last episode? Terrible writing that's why.

If and when Doctor Who returns I pray it is in the hands of someone who will respect the show and its very long history.

RTD managed to make me appreciate the Chris Chibnal era more, which is one hell of an achievement.

In my heart the show ended when Capaldi regenerated, I hope the show returns and changes my opinion one day.

On a positive note I rewatched Inferno the other night, we really were spoilt during that era so many great episodes.

Listening to The Chimes At Midnight, they really missed an opportunity not bringing back the 8th Doctor for a live action mini series at the very least.

It's impossible to disagree with that. Bringing Billie Piper back, was an act of desperation. And to think how fans celebrated the news of RTD coming back.

Capaldi was a good Doctor, but the writing let him down more often than not. I can count on one hand the stores featuring his Doctor that I liked. And since then, it's only gotten worse.

Inferno is indeed a classic. Greg Sutton is one of my favourite supporting characters. Derek Newark had that old skool rugged charisma, it's a shame he didn't have a bigger career and as a leading man.

Capaldi is my favourite Doctor (well technically Clara is my favourite) but I think my appreciation for his era has only gotten stronger.

I don't want to say the show died in 2017, but I think Twice Upon a Time puts a pretty decent capstone on the version of Doctor Who that began in 2005.

I endured the Chibnall era by the end of it, after having such high hopes and that's partly why I was ambivalent to RTD returning. Because yes it was relief, I find most of RTD2 watchable, but I was sceptical that he had tempered his instincts even though in the interim he had done Years and Years and It's a Sin.

In his finales he doubles down on the things I hated so much in his first run, and made worse by having Disney money to indulge in.

Getting the original producers from 2005 in the first place already stank of desperation but bringing back Piper was the final nail in the coffin. Narratively it put the show in hole that feels impossible to get out of.

I think a way out of the Rose Doctor is if they make her regenerate again instantly then for a few more times then settle on who the next Doctor will be if the show was to have a long hiatus.

@MajorDSmythe I agree Derek Newark was a good actor and warranted better roles. Strange coincidence I was looking through my Freeview recordings earlier and was considering watching Sidney Lumet's The Offence starring Sean Connery and Derek Newark.
