I'm currently in Austria. Love it, except for two things: 1)the current heatwave. 2)people smoke almost everywhere, and a lot. They seem to have very lax smoking laws. And it's really spoiling my time.

That does sound rather unpleasant. They don't have any "Austrian efficiency" regarding smoking then?

They don't have an Austrian efficiency regarding anything: they don't know how to queue, for one (seriously, I now believe that queuing is the greatest thing the Brits ever gave the world), service is often slow, and frequently rude. Don't get me wrong: I love the country, it has a lot to offer, including a great public transport system and spacious and comfortable trains. But they need better smoking laws. I understand they implemented a smoking ban in public places in 2019, more than a decade after the UK and France. There's a health culture that is clearly lacking.

Had a coworker come in knowingly with COVID and they didn’t even bother to wear a mask. Now I have to be paranoid that I’ll catch it in the next couple of days. The least you could do if you still desperately have to work is mask up and wear gloves and stuff.

Clearly regarding the smoking my kind of country, just too rich for my blood.

That reminds me of these lines from the poem 'In Westminster Abbey' by John Betjeman:

Think of what our Nation stands for,
Books from Boots and country lanes,
Free speech, free passes, class distinction,
    Democracy and proper drains.

My wife's just now in Vienna with her sister and a friend. Today it was 30 °C (86 °F for the colonials). Hot for a north German person, but not extreme. Looks like tomorrow it's going to rain all day there, with temperatures falling to 21 on Saturday.

Strange, I'm in Vienna now. Leaving today. The heat wasn't great. But we enjoyed our time here.

You people are funny. It's been 86 or higher in NYC for at least a couple of months this summer.

We northern Europeans are generally not used to sustained heat at that sort of temperature.

They're less used to it I think. It's conditioning.

Meanwhile here in Norway, or at least where I live, it was only 6 ℃ this morning…

It was down to 9 °C last night here in Northern Germany. But summer will return next week, and the nights will at least be in the double digits again.

It all depends on a lot of factors. Our two weeks in Malaysia were lovely, with temperatures between 30-35C. But yesterday temperatures here 'shot up' in The Netherlands from 15 to 25C, and the warmth (I wouldn't call it 'heat') was very uncomfortable. Still haven't figured out why it is so diferent, but it is.

I’m in the states as we speak, I found everyone in New York to be very pleasant. We’ve only been in LA a day and the same can be said so far.
To be fair, there aren’t many places I’ve been where people have been rude or annoying…possibly Disneyland Paris, but that’s a one off.
I honestly believe that most people are good and decent.

My experiences in the States are pretty much limited to New York and the western coast as well, and I have to say the same. Love our American friends and wish the best for them.

I really didn’t expect to fall in love with the US as much as I have.
    Especially NYC.
Never felt unsafe the whole time. Although to be fair we did only visit the tourist areas. Though I found that the people of New York are genuinely proud of their city. It’s a great trait to have and they should be proud. It’s an amazing place unlike any other I have been to. Certainly on par with Tokyo but they’re both very different places. The car horn is a must in NY, but never heard in Tokyo.

My father-in-law is South African and he told me the difference is in the humidity. He finds 30 horrible in the UK, but always found much higher temperatures in his homeland fine. Because he grew up with dry heat. When it's not in the UK, it's wet. I follow soprano Jeanine de Bique on social media. She's from Trinidad. Last August she complained about temperatures being round 35 C in Belgium (I think it was Belgium). If it's too hot for a Trinidian, it's too hot for me too.

Agree about the humidity. 25 or more degrees C are awful if the air is humid, and you can expect (and hope for) a thunderstorm any time soon. Highest temperature here in Northern Germany EVER recorded was about 40.2 °C, three years ago on three separate days. But the air was dry, and so it was kind of ok and not much different from earlier record temperatures like 38°C.

This morning, my cat peed on my bed. And on my pajamas. And on me. This didn't do anything good for my blood pressure.

If he (or she?) doesn't normally do this (which I don't expect), perhaps you should go see a vet.

Maybe they were the cat's pajamas.

I lost my job last Friday. Had a new one since June, but never really got into it, so they ended my probation period. I didn't get angry: I was already fed up with it, I didn't like the company's way of doing things, didn't like how they evaluated performance and set KPIs. I'm financially secure, mortgage paid, wife has a job, so I'm okay. Still, it's not pleasant.

Sorry to hear that @Ludovico, that’s never a pleasant situation. But at least you’re financially secure.
Here’s hoping you find a new role soon enough.
