I'm currently in Austria. Love it, except for two things: 1)the current heatwave. 2)people smoke almost everywhere, and a lot. They seem to have very lax smoking laws. And it's really spoiling my time.

That does sound rather unpleasant. They don't have any "Austrian efficiency" regarding smoking then?

They don't have an Austrian efficiency regarding anything: they don't know how to queue, for one (seriously, I now believe that queuing is the greatest thing the Brits ever gave the world), service is often slow, and frequently rude. Don't get me wrong: I love the country, it has a lot to offer, including a great public transport system and spacious and comfortable trains. But they need better smoking laws. I understand they implemented a smoking ban in public places in 2019, more than a decade after the UK and France. There's a health culture that is clearly lacking.

Had a coworker come in knowingly with COVID and they didn’t even bother to wear a mask. Now I have to be paranoid that I’ll catch it in the next couple of days. The least you could do if you still desperately have to work is mask up and wear gloves and stuff.

That reminds me of these lines from the poem 'In Westminster Abbey' by John Betjeman:

Think of what our Nation stands for,
Books from Boots and country lanes,
Free speech, free passes, class distinction,
    Democracy and proper drains.

My wife's just now in Vienna with her sister and a friend. Today it was 30 °C (86 °F for the colonials). Hot for a north German person, but not extreme. Looks like tomorrow it's going to rain all day there, with temperatures falling to 21 on Saturday.

Strange, I'm in Vienna now. Leaving today. The heat wasn't great. But we enjoyed our time here.

You people are funny. It's been 86 or higher in NYC for at least a couple of months this summer.
