Well maybe an unknown is what’s needed for Bond 26
    Not a bad idea.

I agree. I think this unknown guy should be given serious consideration....

I finally watched Superman last night, thought Hoult was really good in it. I’m still thinking he’s in with a good chance, if being contracted to Lex doesn’t put him out of the running.

Ah, the elusive “ white whale “‘, the unknown actor. The actor eventually cast will have a certain body of work; they aren’t going to cast someone who comes from a dinner theater background. The upper level of public recognition would be someone like Theo James or Nicholas Hoult , with the lower end a Leo Suter or Callum Turner.

I find it humorous that many call for an “ unknown “ but when actors who fit that description are suggested, it’s often followed by ‘ well, he really hasn’t done anything’. or ‘ he hasn’t proven that he can carry a film.

I mean you've just said exactly that so I guess you've amused yourself! :D
That's just logic really, I don't see them giving a role this big to someone who has never starred in a film or large screen production before. They did it once with Bond and it ended badly, and it matters even more now. You just have to listen to Craig talk about the experience of shooting one of these.

I think some folks hope for an unknown because they want to believe there's a guy out there who looks just like Tim Dalton and has the experience of/acts like Craig or Connery who we've all somehow never seen before, but it's going to be a compromise.

While it’s incredibly important that an actor who can handle the role, and all that goes with it is important , all of the other elements, script, director, production design, score, supporting cast, etc, are equally important, if not more important. If an actor is cast who is a relative unknown but possesses all of the qualities needed, he will immediately be known as James Bond; almost overnight he will be a star.

I've never been convinced by Hoult for Bond.

He was in a film called Those Who Wish Me Dead with Angelina Jolie, he played a menacing assassin and he just wasn't convincing at all

It would depend on the unknown. I think it's very unlikely we're going to get such an actor who has all those qualities though - not just the looks but charisma, talent, screen presence. Generally to be a very good actor (or even just to hone that charisma/screen presence) you need a level of experience, and I think it's fair to say more established actors have a leg up here.

I think, for example, we're just not likely to get a good Bond from a 30 year old, little known model who looks like the incarnation of a young Gregory Peck, but hasn't been in anything. Unfortunately, much like poor George Lazenby I think they'd struggle with the performance. As good as the film might be, a lacklustre Bond will be front and centre for the audience. I just don't think they can get away with a bad lead (and incidentally, I don't think we'd get a bad Bond from Turner, ATJ, Suter, or even James or Hould. Some might be stronger picks than others, but I think all would put in competent performances).

Was he runner up for Batman too, only lose to Pattinson?

I'd never heard of David Corenswet before he was cast as Superman, and now he's quite high in my Superman actor rankings. I think an unknown actor for Bond would be fine as long as he's right for the role. Sadly though, we're living in an era where it seems to be believed that just about anybody can play Bond as long as he's young enough to carry the role for a decade.
I know a guy that was dead set on Rich Little taking over from Roger Moore. Today a suggestion like that would be embraced with open arms. :D

It just struck me how the casting of the two superheroes mentioned above, Batman and Superman illustrate the two approaches to casting; in motion pictures Superman has always gone with relatively unknown actors while Batman has gone with established performers.

Yeah it is interesting how they've always found a relatively unknown for Superman.

Yes, although to be fair I'm pretty sure Pattinson was the main choice anyway. In fact Hoult's even spoken about listening to the radio in his car and hearing about how Pattinson had definitely been cast as Batman a week before he was meant to audition. Not the best sign! It doesn't say anything about Hoult's talents as an actor though (he's a very good one). When it comes to Bond it's probably the same situation with Superman and Batman though - he's just probably not quite the right fit for that role. I'd be very surprised if it's him. The guy's clearly got some great roles ahead of him though, and I think he's more interesting when he's playing supporting parts or villain roles.

Prospect like Corenswet for Bond 7 would be amazing.

The overwhelming majority of the prospects we mention here are relatively unknown. The majority of the movie going audience are not locked in and paying attention to casting rumors and things like that they way we as bond fanatics do.

'Unknown' is not a flaw. It's potential.
